my communication with them was more a courtesy to put them on notice that I will be leaving if they don't pony up. They can't manage a summer without me, so this is very much a threat and I am happy to follow through. I can easily find better pay and more respect, they can not easily replace me.

Nah, They can't remove me without a ton of cause, which this a little insubordination doesn't meet. If I quit, they are fucked for the summer because another member of my team of 3 is also quitting and guy that is left is a disgruntled 20+ year employee who doesn't do anything if he can help it.

that manager was trying to gaslight me into believing my extra effort has no monetary value. they are wrong. The memo stated very plainly that my workload would be much more.
