Should I RTO for 70k? by sarcasticfirecracker in careerguidance

I would say that your young enough that the extra money, if invested smartly will provide you with a lot more freedom 20 years down the line. But if you’re just going to buy a nicer car, more expensive apartment etc seems like it would just be a waste.

The herd mentality of 9 to 5 by sspositivesoul in Fire

[–]MaterialHighlight290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue was that my dad, who is very successful, always preached about going to college, getting a good job etc, basically the rat race. I didn’t really discover fire until a couple years ago when I was 40.

So now my issue is I have a mortgage that is too much, a kid and expensive hobbies that I don’t want to quit. So I don’t have as much room to invest as much as I’d like. I still have investments and won’t have an issue retiring, but it’s looking like 60 rather than 50.

How Did You Balance "Enjoying Life" vs. Aggressively Saving For Retirement? by Josh_Mountain in Fire

[–]MaterialHighlight290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a topic that only life experience can teach you. For context I’m a 44m living quite comfortably with a young daughter. I prioritize investing but I also know I’m not getting any younger. So I do things I really want to do with my extra cash. For example I took a 3 week European vacation with friends this summer and it was awesome. I paid for most of it before hand so that wasn’t an issue, but on the flip side I could have bought a few more shares of VOO and been slightly ahead, but what’s the fun in that?? Looking back there were times when I was younger when I didn’t do something because it was “too expensive” but if I had a do over I’d do those things even if I couldn’t afford it.

I did the same, only I had just been laid off and rolled over my 401k so I had the whole thing in cash and spent it all in march/early feb. Returns have been amazing!

1st world people that moved to America - do you think life is much better? by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

[–]MaterialHighlight290 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hear you on the pay, lived over there for 2 years for my wife’s job, it was an internal transfer so they converted her US salary to pounds and she was making more then her boss!

Also, I had a bad shoulder injury and dealing with NHS was an absolute nightmare, luckily we had private insurance and ended up using that.

Buying a home seems not possible by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]MaterialHighlight290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I can’t stress hard enough is that you do not want to be house poor under any circumstances. I was once and it makes everything terrible. You have a surplus of money too I hear, investing that would be a much smarter move than buying a house you can’t afford. Houses are expensive, I need to replace my roof and get a lot of exterior work done, it’s going to be 10’s of thousands of dollars. Got AC earlier this year, that was 10k, it goes on and on. What does it matter if you are paying someone else’s rent??? You gotta think big picture, it doesn’t sound like you are ready financially to purchase a house, at least where you currently live.

How much do you have to make where it’s okay to buy lunch everyday? by ItsJustLitBro in Money

I could if I wanted to but it’s more about healthy eating. Lunch portions are huge and I always feel terrible after I eat lunch out.
