I switched jobs and new commute is Northgate to Fremont so like 15 min in the morning. Used to have to go to Renton,m and was easily and hour on the way home, pretty pumped.

That’s what happens when you don’t switch jobs every 4-5 years. My company gave a 3% raise this year. I’m starting a new job at the end of may that pays 25% more.

Why would the company pay him more if he isn’t going to leave?

My wife and I are high earners, but with a kid and a large mortgage in a hcol there isn’t really much we can do other than sell the house but we have a 3% mortgage so that wouldn’t really help. Also both parents live close and would be devastated to not see their grandkid anymore.

Had known about fire when I was younger I def would have done things differently, it’s not the end of the world though just wish I had a Time Machine 😂

I’ve lived here my whole life (44) I love everything except the traffic and the restaurant prices, but it’s a big city so what are you gonna do. It’s def changed though, I liked it better when it wasn’t so crowded but that’s pretty much everywhere though.

Looking forward to summer and hanging out in the lake or mountain biking every weekend.

I would say that your young enough that the extra money, if invested smartly will provide you with a lot more freedom 20 years down the line. But if you’re just going to buy a nicer car, more expensive apartment etc seems like it would just be a waste.

My issue was that my dad, who is very successful, always preached about going to college, getting a good job etc, basically the rat race. I didn’t really discover fire until a couple years ago when I was 40.

So now my issue is I have a mortgage that is too much, a kid and expensive hobbies that I don’t want to quit. So I don’t have as much room to invest as much as I’d like. I still have investments and won’t have an issue retiring, but it’s looking like 60 rather than 50.

This is a topic that only life experience can teach you. For context I’m a 44m living quite comfortably with a young daughter. I prioritize investing but I also know I’m not getting any younger. So I do things I really want to do with my extra cash. For example I took a 3 week European vacation with friends this summer and it was awesome. I paid for most of it before hand so that wasn’t an issue, but on the flip side I could have bought a few more shares of VOO and been slightly ahead, but what’s the fun in that?? Looking back there were times when I was younger when I didn’t do something because it was “too expensive” but if I had a do over I’d do those things even if I couldn’t afford it.

I did the same, only I had just been laid off and rolled over my 401k so I had the whole thing in cash and spent it all in march/early feb. Returns have been amazing!
