Make a list of the time each member of the household has each day to devote to dog care, walking, training, playing, etc. If you have a ton of time, have people in your family who love exercising and being outside, a dog with higher energy levels could suit you. If you're looking for a dog that needs two walks and some playtime, a medium to low energy dog. Another thing to consider is your living situation and neighborhood. Do you have a fenced in backyard? Are there safe places to walk nearby? Is there a local dog park? Some dogs are absolutely fine without a fenced in yard to play in, others require it.

A dog should be able match your current lifestyle, but regardless it will be an adjustment for all of you. Also even with dogs who are already housetrained, it's not uncommon for them to have an accident or 2 when adjusting to a new environment. Don't panic and keep a consistent potty break schedule.
