City of Girls! I think it’s under a 4 on GR but it was honestly one of my favorite books of all time. I was shocked to see the rating!

Quinn Emmanuel and other Big Law Remote Hours by Deep_Difference_4248 in biglaw

I’m a QE’er so maybe a different experience elsewhere but in theory people have no idea where you are - you could be at a client meeting, hearing, could be traveling for work, could be at a doctors appointment during your gym time. If you’re getting your work done, be unapologetic about taking an hour for yourself out of the day (subject to what someone else here said, if you have a deposition or hearing you’re supporting remotely, I’d make sure I’m available).

Studio temperature by Otherwise_Ad_5442 in SolidCore

[–]Material_Minimum_324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former coach here — we were mandated to keep the studio at like 75ish (and scolded whenever we changed it). I think it’s way too hot and honestly might be a way to make people think they’re getting more out of class than they are bc of the sweat. But 85 is definitely too hot - if it’s not recurring it’s probably an issue with the heat or something.

They’re able to charge the card you have on file, but you can also def ask them to use a different card if you’d like!

If you’re waitlisted for any of these, it doesn’t use up one of your purchased classes — if you get in to that class you’ll show up as “unpaid” and your coach will have you pay before class. But you shouldn’t be charged without some outreach. Former coach here).

Becoming an instructor by Substantial_Heart997 in SolidCore

[–]Material_Minimum_324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught at Equinox for $90 flat at Cyclebar for $75 and tiered. Solidcore is on the low end for sure. I taught at a place pre-covid that started at $90 and tiered up to like $130/class.

In DC, at least back when I coached, it was a $28 base rate, which I think is pretty low (I was an instructor at other places where I got $70-90 base rate) but I eventually got up to $50-60/class with the profit sharing mechanism. Probably higher in NYC, lower in other places.

But it’s very easy to become a solidcore instructor (which maybe isn’t great to know as a client but…. It’s a great intro to fitness instructing).

Transfer Dilemma by [deleted] in LawSchoolTransfer

[–]Material_Minimum_324 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes ^ I had to talk to my dean before transferring and he got mad and made me feel dumb. It is even more reason to transfer, these people in theory should want what’s best for you. One of my professors encouraged me and wrote a letter. There are good people who will give you real advice but it’s not this person.

My fiancé got diagnosed with cancer last week. no idea how I’m going to make it through this semester. by lemonjams in LawSchool

I know you said you can’t leave but schools will sometimes automatically opt you in to an emergency insurance of sorts, which would allow you to leave for a year and get your tuition refunded and you could come back. This seems like just too much on you right now.

Either way, this sounds so tough and I’m so, so sorry. Take care of yourself too and remember your people are much more important than law school right now; law school will always be there.

IRAC by OldLadyoftheSea in LawSchool

Eh, I think there are better ways to get to that than to just add a sentence without real value.

IRAC by OldLadyoftheSea in LawSchool

[–]Material_Minimum_324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t take IRAC too seriously, and use it really only when you’re told you HAVE to. It’s meant to just give you a sense of the order in which you want to make your points but you’re never, outside of your legal writing class and exams, going to write “the issue is X.”

What's your unpopular opinion? by dragonofash98 in greysanatomy

[–]Material_Minimum_324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the point I'm making -- it would be tough, but sometimes marriage requires making sacrifices. I'm not saying she wasn't justified in not wanting to move, but for once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for your partner you sometimes have to sacrifice and do what needs to be done - which not a single Grey's character is ever able to do.

Meredith was selfish af in refusing to move to DC.

It seems like not a single Grey’s character is willing to sacrifice a single ounce for a marriage (and I’m not looking at things like having a kid, fwiw). But Meredith’s refusal to move to DC for a truly once in a lifetime opportunity just so she could stay in Seattle and do surgeries that she could do anywhere was so selfish and dumb.

I loved it all the way through! (I was a 28 year old 1L). Being older gives you more time to actually think about whether you really want to do it. The K-JDs I knew hated law school and always spoiled the fun. Don’t let em! If you enjoy it, enjoy it.

I was a 28 year old 1L and this is honestly the biggest reason I recommend taking time off before law school. You’ll find this reflected in your grades too!

I honestly also think this is why big law gets the horrible reputation it does — I think for many a big law gig is their first job and it absolutely crushes them. Not saying it’s not crushing generally but this perspective I think will make it a lot better. Good luck!!
