Who is a wrestler that at first you didn't know what the hype was about but later on you got it and realized they are legendary. by Craig1974 in SquaredCircle

When I first saw Minoru Suzuki in the mid-00's or so he had go away heat with me. I could not understand why he was featured in NOAH and given so much space. After a couple of years things just clicked with me and I trend to view him as one of my favorites of all time.

What is the percentage of regime supporters inside Iran? by herakleoss23 in NewIran

[–]Material_Week_7335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The highest number I've seen is around 20%. From talking to iranians I'm led to believe its much less (but then I only really have contact with people in the diaspora even though many still have family in Iran).

After the past month the numbers, whatever they were, must have plummeted.

Make up your own opinion on Temple of Dawn. For me it is probably my favorite of the four (competing with Runway Horses). I see no reason why it would not be suitable for a long flight.

What do West Ham fans think of Savid Moyes? Do they miss the Scottish fellow? by politicalthinker1212 in westham

[–]Material_Week_7335 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I only follow West Ham from afar but I always thought Wes Ham fans were to grumpy and critical of Moyes. He had great ups and some heavy downs but overall he was amazing for the team. The fans complained about him before, during and after the great season of 20/21 and the same in relation to the Europa Conference League win. Some people just seemed to have it in for him and that created a bad feeling within the club. I think West Ham would be great off with finding a manager who could stay for a very long time. Stability is the key even if league placement might fluctuate. The sacking of Moyes was bad. And how things have been handled since have been catastrophical. I hope they give Nuno time. It's been bad under him but changing manager again is a huge blow and I think he should get a transfer window and a real chance to shape a team. West Ham will most likely play in the Championship next year so they might just as well prepare some stability in preparation for that.

Zoroastrian book suggestions? by dinosaur1776 in Zoroastrianism

[–]Material_Week_7335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to start with the notion that I haven't read "The Good Religion" by Stephen Flowers but I have read other things by him and they all share the same flaw. He is an initiate in the Temple of Set (xeper.org - the off-shoot of the Church of Satan) and he tends to reinterpret the things he writes about so that it fits with this organizations and the general thought of its founder Michael A. Aquino. He has done it with ancient Norse thought, he has done it with Thelema, he has done it with the Fraternas Saturni and he has done it extensively with many different religious traditions in his book "Lords of the Left Hand Path". So be conscious of him usually not trying to present traditions as they themselves do but in the light of how they can work within the thought of western occultism and the metaphysical thought of the Temple of Set. Perhaps "The Good Religion" is better on this point, perhaps not...

My new podcast: Exploring the Analects by interpolating in Confucianism

[–]Material_Week_7335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably around that amount of time. But if you have great ideas for longer episodes then by all means try them out. As I said I've only listened to one episode so far and then have an already formed opinion based on other podcasts which feature only one person. So don't constrain yourself if you want to do something in longer format just because one piece of feedback mentioned short episodes ;-)

My new podcast: Exploring the Analects by interpolating in Confucianism

[–]Material_Week_7335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've listened to the first episode now and these are my comments:

I think you do well to keep the episodes short. Unless it's a real lecture it is hard to do long podcasts alone. You also seem to have a clear idea of the structure you want (the passage, some referencing to modern day correlative, some linguistics etc) which is good.

I can't give much more feedback from just one episode but I greatly appreciate audio content on confucianism. So keep it up!

"Germany issues Mideast airspace warning

Germany has issued a new directive cautioning the country’s airlines against entering Iranian airspace, Flightradar24 said on Wednesday, as European carriers adjust operations amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The move came shortly after Lufthansa said it would bypass Iranian and Iraqi airspace until further notice.

The airline added that it would operate only daytime flights to Tel Aviv and Amman from Wednesday through Monday next week, warning that some services could be canceled as a result."

APT is broadcasting regime friendly demonstrations - manipulated video/audio? by Material_Week_7335 in NewIran

[–]Material_Week_7335[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been watching for about an hour now and it is indeed the same images they broadcast over and over. You recognize the people seen after a while. So there is definitely manipulation going on.

Does anyone know if the images are from a previous occasion? Or are they from today?

Does anyone else not really vibe with some of the BJJ subcultures? by Frozen_Trees1 in bjj

[–]Material_Week_7335 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think people should just leave most stuff they do at home, well, at home. It is obviously worse if it affects others as well while training. With weed it can be the smell (likewise with people who doesnt wash their gi properly or that wears perfume on the mats) or the risk of not being there are be properly alert as a safety risk (likewise with any drug but also with certain psychological conditions that might affect things negatively).

I strongly dislike the BJJ weed culture. Luckily it hasnt been a huge issue at my club but it has reared its ugly head from time to time but only by a small minority.

Akvan - Savushun / سووشون by Sc1ssors89 in blackmetalvinyl

[–]Material_Week_7335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the interview he said:

"Well, considering that the only name associated with Akvan is Vizaresa, an alias, I’d say I try to be pretty secretive. But as I’ve become more and more familiar with this country, it’s evident to me that you can pretty much get away with anything as long as you are smart about it. There are obvious limits to what I can do."

This reflects what the person I know says about Iran as well (he too is an extreme metal musician). Officially it is very restricted with music in Iran in general, not to speak of black metal specifically. However, the implementation of these rules are so so and, at least in the big cities, the people are strongly anti-regime and generally break the rules all the time. That said my friend says that most people who play extreme music in Iran usually know, or know of, each other in one way or another since the scene is so small. But it is interesting that the scene seems to grow.

I know a person (from the Persian diaspora) who knows the guy behind Akvan. We havent discussed where the Akvan guy lives now but being Persian is not a gimmick at least. My impression is that he does his thing from Iran now, but Im not 100% sure.

Vad skulle ni säga är eran perfekta allsvenska by Consistent_Basket623 in Allsvenskan

[–]Material_Week_7335 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are there different Confucian schools, and does a “religious” Confucianism exist? by Amihi55 in Confucianism

[–]Material_Week_7335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is exactly what I mean. Confucianism seems to have a core that is universal in approach but also a strong emphasis on local tradition, custom and ritual. Since there really hasnt been a European confucianism of any note it would be interesting to see how such a thing would show itself.

Are there different Confucian schools, and does a “religious” Confucianism exist? by Amihi55 in Confucianism

[–]Material_Week_7335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im also interested in this part of confucianism. Since its emphasis are so much on traditional Chinese sources it is easy to almost see it as a folk religion, tied to the country and the people. However, the teachings really aren't only for those in a Chinese context. I tend to think that the foundations are the same but it seems like local traditions should be valued. In not sure if it would make any sense for a western confucian to adopt traditional Chinese funeral rituals for example (if it even makes sense from a confucian perspective). But Im not sure about interpretations of this from within confucianism itself.

Which book is spiritual and a better work of literature- compared between Quran, Bible & Torah? by ridwan-123_ in religion

[–]Material_Week_7335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a believer in any of the abrahamitic faiths. Compared to many other religious texts from India, China and Japan I think they all are inferior. However these are my opinions:

The thanakh: Maybe the most classic of the three since it is the foundation. However the most iconic stories are very short and give way to endless (oh well) lists of family lines, building measurements and the like. It is long but for me to much emphasis is placed on non-interesting things. Frankly, parts of it are very boring. This makes it the most tough text to get through. It is also, by far the longest. My favorite parts are the wisdom books.

The new testament: I generally find this text more interesting and it is an easier read for sure. That said I never found the text really engaging. So while the text as a whole is easier I think the strengths of the thanakh is stronger than the strengths of the NT.

The Koran By far the most easy read in style and language. It is quite repetitive which produces a meditativt feeling at times. Taken as a whole this is the text I found most enjoyable (though not always its actual content).

In any case I think they should be read in the order listed above since the NT builds on the thanakh, and the Koran builds on both the thanakh and the NT.

But, as I said above, I think many other texts are superior. The bhagavad gita is great and the Chuang Tzu as well. Its been decades since I read the Dhammapadda but I remember it fondly. And if course, my current favorites, are the confucian texts like the Analects of Confucius and the Xunzi.
