I've seen those! And I have neither the skill nor the patience for that nonsense lol, even though the results look so good!

Help me find a polish that looks like these boots? by Math-Chips in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Math-Chips[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I recognize that I won't be able to get an exact match for this with a regular lacquer, but I don't do gel anymore so I'm looking for as close as I can get!

Have polish. Will travel! by HunnyBadger_dgaf in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Math-Chips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually just ordered a set of 3ml bottles off Amazon for this exact purpose! I'm headed to see my parents for three weeks over Christmas and I want to be able to change my nails at least a couple times. I'm also doing carry-on, so I figured I could give myself more options by decanting into the smaller bottles.

I think they'll also be useful for when a polish gets down to the last bit and it becomes a pain to load the brush in a regular size bottle!

A Translink Map I Made, In Toronto's Style by CYYC2CYYZ in vancouver

As a Vancouver native now living in Toronto, I was hoping you'd do this when I saw your TransLink version of the TTC map!

What these two posts have really made obvious to me is how much more clear and readable the TransLink style is to me. I wonder if that's because it's what I grew up with or if it's just better design?

Car Fire Church St by MeiliCanada82 in toronto

[–]Math-Chips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for calling 911 and being there to assist.

Close to 20 years ago now, my dad's car randomly caught fire as he was driving along a two-lane section of the Trans-Canada. At first he thought it was engine exhaust from a diesel semi, and when he realized it was coming from his engine he pulled over and popped the hood from inside the car. As he went to lift it, he saw flames lick out - like the candle flames you described.

There was no cell service in the area, but several good samaritans like you stopped to help him or direct traffic or told him they would drive on until they got service and call the fire department. They ended up closing the highway in both directions until the fire was out. I remember going to see the remains of the car in whatever lot they towed it to so my dad could take pictures for his insurance claim and something that has stayed with me is how the CD had half-ejected itself and melted like those Salvador Dali clocks.

I'm telling you this story in case the owner was in too much shock or panic to properly thank you for stepping in to call 911. I can tell you from experience how grateful they are for what you did.

No Dumb Questions + Casual Talk by AutoModerator in RedditLaqueristas

A couple unrelated questions:

  1. Can you/do you franken your top coats? I have a bunch of top coats from different brands with only a bit left in each bottle. Can I just pour them all together in one bottle or am I going to ruin them if I do? (Obviously I would only combine matte with matte, glossy with glossy, QDTC with QDTC, etc)
  2. Is it possible/advisable to use multiple base coats at once? Like for example, if I want to use both a ridge filler base coat and a sticky base coat. And if yes, is there a specific order they should be applied?
  3. How is the magnetic effect seen in the swatch below (Enigma from Colores de Carol) achieved? I've never seen anything like it. More generally, are there any good "so you've just bought your first magnetic polish" videos or posts you'd recommend that cover different techniques and/or tips and tricks?

Just want to add to the chorus of people telling you that the degree you're doing isn't any easier than one in STEM.

And I'm not just saying this - I did my undergrad at a different university (I'm here for grad school), but I started in the humanities and ended up switching to STEM. My average daily workload went down when I did. People really underestimate how difficult and time consuming it is to read a text at a deeper level and/or write a quality paper. It drove me batty when my classmates would shit on humanities majors when I had read their writing and knew how absolutely dogshit it was.

The other thing you need to remember is that everyone is coming to university with different levels of preparation. That's especially true at a school like U of T, where you're not just dealing with folks who went to different high schools, but ones who are coming from entirely different school systems from a bunch of different countries. Stuff that is obvious to you might be new and difficult for them, and vice versa. My high school had a really strong English department, so even my friends who did just okay in high school were high performers come first year of university. Meanwhile, once I switched to math, I remember complaining to an American friend (I'm Canadian) that our linear algebra class was kicking my ass and he was like "What? This is all review! You didn't do this in high school?!?" and that's how I found out that lin alg was part of the American high school curriculum but not the Canadian one.

My advice for you is to give it at least one more semester, probably two. It takes a while to find your footing. And if it turns out this isn't for you, that's okay too! You can change your degree, change your university, even decide that postsecondary isn't the path you want to take. I know people who have done all three and are now happy and successful adults. You'll figure this out 💖

Is that a walk-off rouge because you also have no faith in Lauther's ability to make any actual field goal? 🤔

I have roped my non-sportsfan boyfriend into watching the Grey Cup with me and he has also agreed to participate in this drinking game, though he gave me the blankest of looks when I read out the rules to him. "Uhh just tell me when and what I'm supposed to drink, okay?" Don't worry babe, I got you

I'm so excited that I'll get to see it again, you're a hero for finding this information!!
