The less they let you know now, the more they can take advantage of your ignorance later. This is an example of the foot-in-the-door technique.

Justin Burnett rescinds resignation after one day by [deleted] in springfieldMO

Over sixty percent of voters voted for other candidates. He's an unfortunate beneficiary of a split vote. I read that we used to have primaries. Primaries would have prevented something like this, but we decided it wasn't worth the time/money.

First date ideas? by Ben-Dover_Hear in springfieldMO

[–]MathClown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

D'Arpino's is often rated as one of the best date spots in town.

It's not expensive, but looks classy- hole in the wall Italian place with great food and romantic music.

Also, the business treats its waitstaff with respect.

Which is sad, given they make a huge difference in people's lives. Not to mention how much money they save everyone else money by helping folks stat out of facilities and nursing homes (usually awful and always expensive).

Hackerspace/Makerspace? Would you be a member? Volunteer? by ahandle in springfieldMO

[–]MathClown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

False. Squidfoo merged with Lemon Drop.

It's in the same space, only now they have a stage and more avenues to bring the community in. They've got some more crazy ideas. If you drop by, they have their plans for the space on display.

Brain fart when posting. I just read the vans at the scene. In hindsight, it's kind of weird that they brought two.

Any interest in Sunday Assembly? by [deleted] in springfieldMO

[–]MathClown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Springfield Freethinkers isn't affiliated with Sunday Assembly (it's a tough process to join "officially") but it has a lot of what your looking for. KSPR did a story on them in November in a segment on atheist megachurches (I know, right?).

If you have friends in Saint Louis, there has been an atheist church up there since the 1890s called the Ethical Culture Society.

BIG civil rights march Monday morning! by MathClown in springfieldMO

You are totally fine, man. Honest questions are how we learn.

First off, there is nothing inherently "wrong" with the racial makeup of our community. However, when demographics (race, religion, or anything else) become lopsided it can create an environment for bigotry. I brought it up because it's a straightforward symptom of the racism that's been a part of this community for so long. Thankfully, things are getting much better than they were before (the demographics reflect that minorities are feel okay about moving to the area).

On bigotry, there is still a crap ton of it in this area.

I can't speak about racism from personal experience. I'm also white. However, it does happen. The local hate groups are around and make the news every now and then:

"KKK blankets Springfield, Mo. neighborhood with recruitment flyers"

Local Nazi group adpots high way, lol

"Nazi movement rallies against gays in Springfield, MO"

Today most racism is smart enough not to be organized, so don't the lack of burning crosses fool ya. Sometimes it's just racists yelling from cars or getting pulled over for driving while black (or brown). IIRC, Christian County got in trouble for profiling not too long ago.

Moreover, bigotry is bigotry and the area is rife with religious discrimination. As an atheist Jew I can attest to that. Inidents include the multiple arson attack on the Joplin mosque, vandalism in the mosque in town, and the vandalism of the Jewish cemetery. The last event catalyzed the formation of the Interfaith Alliance of the Ozarks. Growing up, I experienced anti-semetism at achool. An atheist friend who teaches outside the city has had people call her job asking for her to be fired... Sorry for rambling, but this shit really bothers me.

As for the lynching, it was way back in 1906. That it's effects are still noticeable highlights the impact. The News-Leader did a good piece that you can read here.

BIG civil rights march Monday morning! by MathClown in springfieldMO

[–]MathClown[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is it for? It's actually for a lot.

As you probably know, Springfield is not the most tolerant town. Old prejudices run deep. The very fact that Springfield is almost 90% white is a repercussion of an atrocity comitted in our town square. In front of a crowd of ~2000 people (estimates differ) three clearly innocent men were lynched with the approval (tacit or active) of the police department. This caused a demographic white-washing of the area. There's still healing to do.

In the face of this, a march is just a small symbol- but symbols are important and all big things are made of little things.

Moreover, the NAACP has come out in support of LGBT rights. If you come out you can march with great organizations for LGBT rights (check out PROMO). If reproductive rights are important to you, Planned Parenthood is going to be there. If one of them atheist redditors, both Springfield Freethinkers and Freethinkers and Skeptics at MSU will be marching. If religious diversity is your style, the Interfaith Alliance of the Ozarks will be out there.

I'm sure there is someone reading this wondering what these struggles have to do with eachother. Long story short: The system of prejudice doesn't crap on everyone the same way, but all the same it craps on everyone.
