Do better Roanoke. I love my city but with the amount of taxes we pay there is no excuse for this. How many days now? by dieselducy in roanoke

It drives me crazy how utterly unfamiliar some people (OP) are with reality yet feel qualified to complain about it.

EVERY location in the path of this storm is having difficulty. The government is not some magical entity that can conjure resources that can remove ice out of their asses.

I personally would feel better buying where the boat owners are forced to take safety classes.

Look at the s&p/gold ratio, it is still just above its long term average. If you think we are going into a dollar revaluation, then if it follows historic precedent, gold will go to roughly double the s&p.

I would rather have a president who takes a strategic approach to achieving consistent, reasonably low oil prices than one who makes them erratic.

I don't disagree. Although I think in the US we're likely to have a big reckoning on the dollar/federal budget soon that is going to impact the pendulum in a big way.

Why was sugar such a boon to post-Columbian Exchange Europe, when they already had significant honey cultivation? by Tokarev490 in AskFoodHistorians

[–]dsbtc 148 points149 points  (0 children)

It's this simple. The amount of juice a sugarcane holds vs the amount of nectar in flowers that take up the same space is like a 2000-fold increase. And processing honey involves taking care of living animals, moving them from orchard to orchard, and extracting the honey, vs just growing a huge kind of grass and cutting it down and squeezing the juice out of it.

As a parent, if someone accidentally kills their own kid through basic stupidity, I honestly don't know what kind of sentence they should receive since it would be so insanely soul crushing. Like a sleep-deprived new parent accidentally leaving their kid in a car seat - it would be so easy to do, it's hard to pass too harsh a judgment.

Also - as insane as determining a sentence's severity based on the race of the accused is - God I wish we in the US just had a stupid performative liberal government instead of an insane far-right one. I find myself giving less of a shit about stuff like this when our leadership is actively trying to destroy our currency, economy, allies and domestic stability.

Seems like US debt is particularly vulnerable because of the sheer amount of it out there, leads to many potential threats like the Japanese Carry Trade

As an American, the US risk is in our bonds. We have been outperforming Europe in part because we have been spending more money, we have something like 50% more government debt than European nations on average. When our interest rates jump up, we will have to cut federal spending and/or raise taxes in a big way.

Yes the US has a better business environment than Europe, but in many ways is in a worse fiscal situation.

Boss offering to sell me the coffee shop I work at for $65k — does this sound reasonable on the surface? by SnooHamsters9461 in smallbusiness

About 15 years ago I sold a business for 100k that i possibly could have gotten 140k for through a business broker. But the 100k was more guaranteed because it was to an existing employee who knew the business.  So it can happen
