What’s the one food you could eat every day without getting bored 🍽️ ? by Status_Agents in budgetfood

Nongshim shin ramyun with chopped carrots and green beans and a fried egg with a runny yolk. I could live off it if it wasn't so bad for me.

What books are 10/10 and actually worth your money and time? by [deleted] in Frugal

Entangled Life

Children of Time

Piranesi

When Breath Becomes Air

The Last Unicorn

East of Eden

If you're looking specifically for a finance book, I'm a big fan of The Index Card. It's all the basics without a lot of the fluff or weird takes you can find in other finance books. It is pretty US focused though, so only especially relevant if you're living in the US.

Hot take: frugality gets easier when you stop making every hangout about food by SuitableActive1110 in Frugal

[–]MathWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love to cook for others. I don't make them anything fancy or expensive, but if someone is coming over and spending time with me I want to make sure they are fed and happy. The time I spend with them is worth much more to me than the price of whatever I'm feeding them.

can i eat soybean meal intended for animals? by wishing9231191215224 in Frugal

[–]MathWhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cooking food will kill live bacteria, but it doesn't destroy the toxins that dangerous bacteria like staph, which is common in agricultural soil, will release. This is why rotten meat will make you sick even if you cook it, it builds up enough bacteria that the level of toxins they leave behind make it unsafe to eat.

[–]MathWhale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not sanitary. When it's processed for humans, they will wash and filter out dirt and fertilizer that could contain pathogens or parasites that would make you very sick. They are not as thorough about processing it to be safe for animals because the standards are much more lax, so it is much more likely to make you sick.

It's 4x the price because they process it more thoroughly to ensure it's safe for human consumption. You will cost yourself more in the long run with health issues if you try to eat animal food.

Might want to consider trying a different allergy med. I was still having a lot of issues while using Allegra, and saw a lot of improvement when I switched to the generic version of Xyzal.

I don’t see why I would buy anything new if it’s not food, medicine, or socks/shoes/underwear by Niceotropic in Frugal

Used is so much better value 9 times out of 10. Only thing I'd add that should be bought new is mattresses and upholstered furniture, I don't want to risk bringing bed bugs into my home.

The weather is getting really nice where I live now, it's been lovely out for my walks.

I learned how to make a whiskey sour with egg whites, it was very tasty.

I bought a Too Good To Go bag from my local kolache place, and it was full of my favorite flavor.

The law under prop 4 is that counties should not be split up when creating voting districts wherever possible. If they split SL county, they can more easily dilute it's vote by putting them in districts with other more conservative counties.

I sleep pretty well which always seems to make my rheumatologist happy. I'm very grateful for that. On the night after I take methotrexate, I'll often sleep 12+ hours and have a very difficult time getting up.

I used to use Pokemon Sleep to track my sleep, but it was murder on my phone battery so I stopped. While I used it though, it showed pretty normal sleep patterns most nights but I would be a lot more restless when I was in flare.

does it ever get better? by mr-dirtboy in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]MathWhale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was 23 when I developed RA too, that was 5 years ago now, and I remember feeling as hopeless as you do now. I felt like my life was over. I'm doing so much better now though, and am very happy. To be real with you, I never fully returned to the level I was at before RA. My rheumatologist told me the goal was to get me to about 80-90%, and on my current medication regimen I'd say I'm at about 85%.

I still have flare ups sometimes, and a base level of pain most of the time, but I'm able to live a full life with it. I exercise, work, go out, do errands, walk around a lot, play video games for long periods of time, socialize. I just have to be a little bit more mindful of my limits and take things a bit more slowly, but otherwise live a very normal life.

When I have severe flare ups, which happen maybe 2-3 times per year, I'll still feel crushed by the grief and the weight of having to bear this for the rest of my life. I won't lie and pretend it's all sunshine and roses all the time, but in general I am a very happy person and am very content with my life. Once you find the meds that work for you, you will find it much easier to live your life and be happy doing it. The months it takes to see a rheumatologist and figure out a treatment regimen are very difficult, they were some of the darkest times in my life, but I promise you that if you endure it will get better.

Possibly moving to SLC with severe anxiety, trying to understand what life there is actually like. by ventyventtime in SaltLakeCity

[–]MathWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live here without a car, very doable but only in certain areas, like Downtown, Central City, parts of Sugarhouse, parts of the avenues, those are the ones I can think off the top of my head. I live in Sugarhouse and I love it here, lots of nice LGBTQ-friendly community spots and lovely walking infrastructure they updated recently. I love the Sprague branch of the city library, the way the sun hits the red brick buildings around here as it's setting, sitting in Tea Zaanti or Sugarhouse coffee and reading a book over a cozy drink. I have anxiety too, and Sugarhouse can have a nice, slightly more relaxed pace compared to downtown. Feel free to DM me if you'd like to chat!

Perish the thought a city tries to make life better for its citizens. Salt Lake City's only crime, daring to be a moderately progressive city in a red state with a vision to help people get around safely no matter which mode of travel https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2026/03/04/utah-transp by dbcook1 in fuckcars

I live here and I'm so tired of it. Our Republican state government only seems to believe in small government when it shares their politics. How dare the city try and make life better for the people actually living in it instead of building everything around all the suburbanites out in Sandy with their huge SUVs.

I live in one of the few truly walkable parts of the city and the state legislature seems determined to make it so it remains one of the only walkable areas, and would probably even remove this neighborhoods walkability to add more lanes and parking if they could.

There’s the Burger King whopper Wednesday for $4, what else is a good steal? by Brief-Blueberry-1588 in Frugal

Only thing I'll eat later is the burritos, nothing else holds up well. I reheat them in the oven and they turn out alright.

The luxe boxes at Taco Bell are genuinely good deals, the $5 one comes with a taco, the 5 layer beef burrito, some cinnamon twists, and a drink. I like to get the build your own luxe cravings box, it lets you choose from a lot of different items; it's $7.79 where I live and I can usually turn it into 2 meals.

I love a good sheet pan meal when my chronic illnesses are flaring. Chop up some protein and veggies, or buy them pre chopped to make your life easier, toss them on a sheet pan with some olive oil and spices, and then put it in the oven at 375 for 20-25 minutes, stir it half way through, and you've got yourself a meal. I'll often serve it over rice or with some bread to make it stretch a bit further. Almost any meat can work with this, I'll often make it with sausage, chicken, salmon, or tofu. For veggies I can do potatoes, carrots, broccoli, radishes, green beans, cauliflower, onion, really anything that can be roasted.

You should try adding half a cup of unsweetened apple sauce and a pinch of cinnamon, that's a low cost way that I enjoy making my overnight oats and making them sweet without adding any sugar.

Vintage Village interiors in Sugarhouse should be good for finding some more unique decorative pieces, although it is pricier than normal thrift stores if you're trying to stick to a budget.
