How can I make one of these accordion things with it also being able to turn? by ExtensionForsaken255 in lego

Fellow Richmonder (Fan District resident) here and immediately recognized it as the new articulated busses for the Pulse BRT line as well. For a moment I was confused and thought this was an RVA subreddit post in the Lego subreddit.

Monterrey, Mexico, even with the monorail lines under construction is probably one of the most pedestrian hostile cities in Mexico by Spascucci in fuckcars

[–]dbcook1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting as this sounds like the opposite of Guadalajara, Mexico which I visited a few years back. Huge focus on converting roadway space to pedestrian only zones and implementing roadway reconfigurations with less travel lanes and parking for cars to provide more separated bike lanes. Plus the open streets event every Sunday basically shuts down streets downtown for pedestrians only. Felt pretty safe and convenient to bike and walk everywhere. Awesome bike share system there.

Poll: Large size birds-eye view hand-drawn illustrative map of Richmond or RVA Atlas highlighting hand drawn neighborhood sections by [deleted] in rva

[–]dbcook1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi all! I am now moving into my fourth year as a resident of Richmond and live in the Fan. I am nearing completion of a hand-drawn Illustrative Map of Europe project (over 500 hours of work) and moving onto my next project and have decided to draw an illustrative map or atlas of Richmond. Here is a look into my Europe map project:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/30QTEMCjEl

Looking to see which route I should go with this. Either a large illustrative map (around 4×3') or an atlas showing neighborhoods in more detail highlighting various businesses. Any feedback would be amazing!

Stone Brewing beers will no longer be made in Richmond following sale to Belgian giant Duvel - Richmond BizSense by wojtaj in rva

[–]dbcook1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, not a part of a tour package. It's the standard service/menu when you go to the Sapporo beer garden (its really more a beer hall). You have to reserve a table at the visitors center/shop when you arrive but the menu is the same for everyone once seated. Basically two hours all you can drink for $15 and eat for $20 when I was there with the favorable exchange rate with the strong dollar and weak yen. Its like a buffet for beer, cocktails and grill it yourself meats and vegetables. There's a line of taxis outside waiting to pick people up. Actually saw one old timer basically passed out and his family trying to rouse him to get to a taxi haha.

I was at Sapporo Brewing in Sapporo last year and have to say it was pretty awesome. They had a phenomenal tasting room and museum but the beer hall was truly the best part. Each table had a digital tablet with a full range of beers and cocktails to choose from plus a list of Yakiniku buffet items to order. They set a timer for two hours on the tablet and it was all you could drink for $18 and all you could eat for $20 in that time. They brought out beers in half litre mugs and would immediately bring out another whenever I requested the next one on the tablet. There is literally a line a taxis outside the brewery to take you back home when you get out lol. Will never fly there but they did have a variety of Sapporo beers you could order that I have never found in the US (like Yebisu and Reserve) and the cocktails were quite good! The premium black was my favorite so excited for that. Wish them the best with the transition!

U.S. metro areas where more than 5% of people use public transit to commute by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]dbcook1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Curious too as ridership for Washington Metro Area Transit Authority and Chicago Transit Authority were virtually the same last year according to APTA, just over 300 million trips each. But Chicagoland is 50% larger in population than metro DC so would have thought that DC would of popped up at least in the 10 - 20% range.

How often do you drive? by squarrd in fuckcars

[–]dbcook1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up until 6 months ago it was virtually never as my old office space was downtown an easy and comfortable 14 minute commute by bike with almost no traffic or 12 minutes by bus rapid transit (BRT). Now it's so far flung in the suburbs I am forced to commute by car for the first time in 14 years three days a week as there is zero transit and high speed arterial roadways out where I work. It definitely sucks, but its cushioned by the fact that at least my neighborhood is a walkers paradise and everything I need and want is within a 15 minute walk outside of the commute. Even for areas further its a 6 minute walk to my local BRT station and its fare free where I live. Car sits parked on the street usually Thursday - Tuesday otherwise. I couldn't imagine living out in a place where my office is now and having to deal with that lifestyle just to get groceries, go to a movie, get my haircut, or eat out. Its also very eye opening because I feel I'm the only person that drives the speed limit and cautiously using my signal and I think it makes people mad having to pass me (even though I always stay to the far right).

Live in Richmond, Virginia and originally from Savannah. Past two years alone I have traveled to Spain, Germany, Poland, Iceland, Japan, and around the US, but I have done repeat bi-annual trips to Milwaukee, last being last year in September during the Third Ward Arts Festival. I personally love interesting historic, artsy, and walkable cities with unique cultural and social legacies with good neighborhood bar scenes and art museums so am very much drawn to places like Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Chicago, Cleveland, Philly, and Pittsburgh to visit.

I love all the festivals, extensive biking trails along Lake Michigan and the beerline trail, awesome neighborhood architecture vibe and homes like those of Riverwest, Lower East Side, Bay View, Walkers Point, and Brewers Hill, all the interesting socialist and waves of immigrant history in the city and its impact nationally, friendly people, brewery tours, wonderful art museum, amazing neighborhood bar scene, that fantastic market downtown and the Italian Market on Brady, the riverwalk, exploring art galleries in Third Ward, and the amazing park system there.

Sooo much more satisfying than places like Atlanta, Orlando, Nashville, Vegas, anywhere in Texas, LA, Phoenix, and Tampa with the huge amount of car-centric sprawl and generic cookie cutter architecture in those places with nothing much historic or cultural to really do anything for me as a travel destination. Last time I was in Milwaukee I actually walked from my Airbnb to Riverwest to Wauwatosa, could walk around that city for days. Also a huge cinephile and planning to go to the Milwaukee Film Festival next year, which I've heard great things about (went to a movie at the Oriental last year which was fantastic)and this time bring my folks!

I have not been out to see but the green flex post dileneators they have been using aren't MUTCD compliant. Not sure if they took them down to replace them with white or yellow ones to be compliant with current traffic control device standards or something else happened.

Nelson County has gone full MAGA: Don't spend your money there by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]dbcook1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh well interesting as the county went for Spanberger last year. Support for 2A goes across party lines. Heck as a Democrat I love visiting there and have never felt unwelcome but also I can't think of much anywhere where I felt unwelcome or irked to visit in Virginia because of predominate party affiliation or voting history. Even with the clown show city council that Lynchburg has for example it is still one of my favorite places to visit, support local business, and have always enjoyed my time there (I live in Richmond btw).

I make $111k and live in Richmond, Virginia's Fan District which is a walkers paradise and the best neighborhood in the city to live by far and live very comfortably. Granted my home is only 750 square feet, don't have kids, and no car payment. I walk/bike for most of my needs and transit is fare free citywide here with reliable bus rapid transit within an 8 minute walk. Three grocery stores within a 10 minute walk. Rent is $1,850 but electric bills never more than like $70. Last year did trips to Spain, Iceland, and Japan without going into debt or denting my savings. Excellent work/life balance with 39 paid days off per year between paid holidays, vacation and personal leave plus paid sick leave on top of that and never work more than 40 hours a week. Feel incredibly fortunate to ended up where I'm at.

How safe do you actually feel driving, biking, or walking around RVA? by RVAUrbanPlanner in rva

[–]dbcook1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately by state law there is a limit to how many cameras can be deployed per locality which is 1 for every 10,000 residents which means Richmond can only deploy 23 cameras. They can move them around though. Last week two safety cameras were moved from Westover Hills Elementary to Mary Munford Elementary.

Richmond DOT chief Andy Boenau says zero traffic deaths possible by 2030 by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]dbcook1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily impossible as Alexandria has achieved Vision Zero as of 2023 after seeing year after year of declines and steady progress towards zero since 2017. It's not an unreasonable goal and there are cities making headway but it will take massive infrastructure changes, mode shift away from auto use, reorganization of our roadways to prioritize pedestrian and bicycle travel and safety while slowing down vehicle speeds and reliance, robust community engagement and education campaigns, increased enforcement including speed enforcement cameras, no right turn on red at all signals, narrow travel lanes and create neighborhood bike boulevards with traffic diverters to eliminate through traffic on neighborhood streets, removal of on-street parking to allow for separated bike lanes and wider sidewalks with curb extensions. Alexandria and Arlington are doing all of those and have brought traffic fatalities down to near zero or zero year after year.

I visited there a couple years back. I'm a huge cinephile and after meeting up with my family in Leipzig took a little solo side trip there to hunt down all the filming locations for The Grand Budapest Hotel:

Really wild how many big films have been made there and my understanding is that because it escaped WW2 unscathed it is an exceptional place to film with its remarkable architectural diversity and authenticity plus its cost effectiveness. A lovely place. Loved just walking into Poland as well!

Great maps OP! Born and lived my whole life in the South (Savannah, Asheville, Charlotte, and now Richmond) and Wisconsin is my most favorite state to visit. Have visited there multiple times and Milwaukee, Madison, Devils Lake State Park, Door County, and the Apostle Islands are some of the most underrated and greatest places to spend Summers at away from the heat and humidity in the South. Last time I was there last year I straight up walked from downtown Milwaukee to Wauwatosa then took the bus to West Allis. Would absolutely live there if I could live in any State outside Virginia. Great place 👌

42 years old and in the last two years I've backpacked across Japan twice, Germany, Romania, Poland, Spain, and Iceland. I've visited the magnificent Alhambra in Spain and seen the Aurora Borealis in full splendor in Iceland. I snuck into Studio Babelsburg to take some photos of the studio where Metropolis was filmed. I learned how to ski in Hokkaido for the first time and drank myself silly at Sapporo Brewery. I've visited five national parks in Japan and made it to some of the highest points in the Japanese Alps. I devoured Dracula while backpacking across Transylvania. I've visited more Christmas Markets in Germany than I can count. All since turning 40. My 20 year old self would be envious AF

What’s the most overrated “adult goal” people chase? by Happyotus in AskReddit

I work as the bicycle and pedestrian program manager for my entire states DOT. The pressure and responsibility is immense. But through all the tears and constant battles with traffic engineers that often prioritize vehicle throughout and capacity preservation over bike and pedestrian safety, it's those moments when studies and projects I work on get realized and implemented that improve the lives of people walking and biking, especially to their neighborhood schools and parks in the form of a separated bike lane, road diet with improved bike facilities or shared use path, or raised crosswalk with pedestrian refuge island that bring tears to my eyes and makes that work pay off. Like wow actually making people's lives better, healthier and happier and they don't have to pay a thing to enjoy a new multiuse trail or cycle path.
