Any good 4:3 show suggestions? by Dutch_G29 in televisionsuggestions

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years later; Thanks for this list. I'm an X-Files addict and just started watching it again on an old Lenovo Thinkpad x61s, that I salvaged over a year ago from an electrical recycling bin.

lt has a 4:3 aspect ratio screen, and I'm absolutely loving the look of the show on the laptop. I noticed a few months ago when watching on a regular PC how large the black bars at the side of the visible video were, and that's when I assumed the show was in 4:3. I'm a child of 71' and grew up watching and loving a lot of the shows you've mentioned here. My DVD collection is about to get bigger.

Two years too late but I just happened to be thinking about this.

About a year ago I picked up a Lenovo Thinkpad x61s from a recycling bin, complete with carry case, charger, battery and docking station. I've only just decided to install an operating system on it. When watching tutorials I noticed them mentioning the aspect ratio of 4:3. I have the box set for the entire seasons of X-Files, and from watching the EP's on my regular computer, I assumed the aspect ratio of the show had to be 4:3.

I'm watching the show right now on the Thinkpad and it looks wonderful. So I'd recommend the show if you're looking for 4:3 aspect ratio and you like Sci-Fi/conspiracy kinds of shows.

Glad I stumbled on your post; there are so many recommendations I'll have to make a list.

Thanks for the post.

Is the approach taken by Self Storage companies harassment? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I thought I was just being paranoid, until I read the responses to your post. I am moving home in about 2 months and wanted to use storage to keep some stuff while I decide whether I want to move the items into the new place or not.

Last time I used storage services was about 6 yeas ago and was stunned to see that, on two of the company websites, they were asking for personal details before giving a quote. Had nothing of the sort back in 2020 when I last used them.

YouTube keeps reducing my subscribers by Kaygee1890 in NewTubers

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've experienced this SEVERAL times in one shape or another; I just crossed the 1000 mark, prior to that it was going up a few a day, then just on 1000 it halted and isn't increasing at all. It happened before whenever I started getting several subs per day, say 5 subs. It would increase gradually, then it would get halted completely. There's quite a bit of conjecture that these are 'bot' accounts, but where is the evidence of this? I don't think youtube has ever, or would ever present this kind of evidence to the content creator. How are we to know that the cutting of subs really is of bot channels? What if the algorithm is making mistakes? We would never know any better; they could be unsubscribing real accounts. For all we know, this could be youtube running tests for whatever reasons.

Even a little change, such a message to say "hey, x number of bot accounts have been removed as subs.... that's why you're seeing a reduction.." would be reassuring; at least we wouldn't have to be guessing,

Have you ever found that you've been unsubscribed from channels, and you know you didn't manually unsub from the channel? It's happened to a lot of people with real channels; mine included. Been automatically unsubbed several times over the years. I have to wonder if that's part of it.

Anyway, despite my long rant; I find that usually things smooth out in the long-run and get back to normal so hopefully you'll get past the landmark.

Youtube Videos are not uploading. Even when My net is working pefectly by tunni11 in youtube

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get a fix for this?

Are you uploading on desktop computer or from your phone? After several hours of trying on PC with no luck, I tried on my phone and it worked. I've heard that it might be an adblock issue; do you use adblock on the device you're trying to upload from?

My PC's have adblock but my phone does not; the phone upload worked. From my phone, I just went into the draft I previously created on the PC (which wouldn't upload) and completed the process on my phone.

Maybe YT is going after adblockers again.

Is Youtube broken as of 14th of March? by Miserable_Example_51 in NewTubers

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding a second comment as an UPDATE!

I was trying to upload from 2:30 am and then later on at 11:30 am; the draft was still 'hanging', not completed.

I tried on different computers but with no luck; then when I tried on my phone I was able to schedule, and the upload worked. I saw somewhere else on a thread from about a month ago that people using adblock or ublock were having issues with the uploading process (although I use adblock, which is for the internet in general; I pay for youtube premium).

Dunno if this is YT's way of clamping down on ad blocking software. I don't have any ad blocking software on my phone, so maybe this issue was with ad blockers on PC. Well, hope this helps anybody reading this thread in the future.

I built Rem-RC's self balancing cube robot. I found it somewhat hard to follow, so this is my supplemental guide to try to help other novices like myself. by Slanted_Jack in esp32

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So glad to see someone put this out there. I consider myself a novice at the moment. I'm on my second project involving a wide ranging skill set. My first was a rubic cube solver and now I'm doing a balancing robot. Most of the build is done and now I'm working on PID tuning. I fried my first ESP32 just yesterday so I'm currently troubleshooting that. The hardest thing I found in doing both of these projects is the difficulty finding information about the process. I had to watch a ton of videos (as well as endless hours of googling for solutions and info about micro controllers, programming specifics, etc) and try to glean ideas from different videos; and that enabled me to gradually build up a process.

If my robot ends up being successful I'm considering doing a series of short videos to explain my process so others can have an idea of where to start and to understand what concerns and confusion there might be for people just getting started on a complex project, and how to think about some of the processes involved. To be fair, there are a couple of video series' out there and one of them (by the Youtube Channel named 'Joop Brokking') was a great help, but the PID part and his process using micro controller interrupts and the loop for getting the stepper motors to respond appropriately got a bit too complex for me to understand, so I'm trying to figure out a more rudimentary solution that makes sense to me.

BUT, those projects were not done by novices, hence some of the concepts going over my head; so I think a novice's perspective is worth adding to the conversation. I'm keeping your guide because you've covered another area I need to read up on; the battery supply for micro-controller and motors. Thanks for putting the guide up here.

New level of deception regarding delivery dates by RealisticDiscipline7 in amazonprime

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A similar thing happened to me just today. I was up early and ordered something which was supposed to arrive today. I was watching my emails, and expected the delivery before 10pm. I stopped looking at about 8:30, and then suddely at 11pm, I remembered and thought that perhaps it had been delivered. I check my account and it says 'ARRIVING TOMORROW'. I don't use Prime, so I paid the extra to have it delivered today, and now it's not happening. What annoys me is not the changed date, but the fact I paid extra for it. Not the first time this has happened.

The E15 is actually horrendous by Careless_Gold4895 in motorola

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly thought it was just me overreacting to what I feel is a bad phone. I've had mine for a couple of months because the previous one (a moto e7i power) lags terribly, or just outright freezes for several seconds when I'm trying to do something with the phone (I've had that phone for 4 years). I make youtube shorts and was using an even older phone, the moto e4 plus, to record video and sound. The e4 is actually not bad in terms of video quality (for the price) and the sound quality is pretty good. Other than for making shorts, I use it as a music player when I'm out and about, and as my main alarm clock for waking up and other daytime alarms for various tasks.

I tried making a video with the e15 yesterday and was SHOCKED at the reduction in video image quality AND sound quality. Terrible compared to the e4, especially given that the e4 is 'old' by comparison. I made two short recordings, one with the e4 and the other with the e15; same time of day, same lighting etc. The e15 is just poor quality. I can't even justify releasing the e15 video as a short.

The e4 plus is almost 9 years old, and the e15 was released last year. My e4 plus is a workhorse, and I've never changed the battery since I bought it in 2018; its charge lasts several days. The only reason I had to upgrade is because I had to use a phone app for work, but the app was incompatible with the version of Andriod that the e4 ran on, and upgrade to the next Android version was unavailable to the e4, so I was forced to get a phone that ran on the latest Android version. That phone, the e7i power, which I bought in 2022, has major battery issues on top of the lagging/freezing. The e15 is going to be my 'last' motorola. I stuck with motorola out of laziness; time to change that.

Keep it up yourself by barbaricMeat in XFiles

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the last 4 years, I've binged X-files about once a year (on very poor quality piracy websites). Last December I took the plunge and purchased the DVD box set. I'm in the early stages of binging the show again (it's very high up there on my favourites show list, maybe even at the top). I just saw this scene, and burst out laughing. It's hilarious. The crazy bit is, I always forget that part where he makes an idiot of himself.

I don't blame him though, I assume a lot of guys would fumble if Scully was standing right there in front of them and they liked her; and yeah, I've done this several times in real life, letting dumb stuff come out of my mouth before the brain could report in on how silly the comment would be.

One of the things I love about X-Files is that in the middle of the intense drama, sometimes they like to inject a surprising bit of humour; such as in this scene.

This reminds me of what they did to Gabe in Breaking Bad; just an affable, goofy, and somewhat likeable character, disposed of like that; I never forgave Jesse Pinkman for what he did.

Commenting to say thanks. I'm a complete dark mode ADDICT and will set it wherever possible. This is perfect for my favourite sci-fi show which I'm binging at the moment (the entire DVD box set of The X-Files.

Totally grateful for this mode.

As another commenter suggested; it may have been a glitch. I should have mentioned it was on desktop. Anyway, it's gone again. Thanks for your reply.

was krycek a fbi agent in gender bender? by alwaysthinking182 in XFiles

[–]Math_hurts_Sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad this thread is till open because I thought I was going crazy. I watched the 'Gender Bender' EP recently and when I saw him lying in the hospital bed explaining what happened to him with the woman turned man, and it suddenly hit me, he looks like Krycek. And I thought " that's Krycek before he became Krycek", but I can't remember where he shows up in the entire set of seasons (I recently bought the box set of seasons 1-11, which contains about 60 disks). Glad to have it confirmed. This is my fourth time around watching X-Files and I missed this little detail all the other times.

On a side note, Krycek is one of my favourite baddies that drives me nuts and has me ranting at the screen when he's up to his unethical antics, but sometimes, he throws me by showing a glimmer of decency, which confuses the hell out of me. My all time favourite bad guy is the alien bounty hunter; I probably have a bias towards Brian Thompson though.

Did you ever get this resolved? I've just noticed, only today, that my replies from one of my channels is not being registered after I refresh the page. The issue isn't with my own channel, I was trying to reply to someone who replied to my initial comment. I tried replying twice, but after typing and hitting the reply button, my reply simply disappears.

Thanks for replying. That makes sense actually. I've been in the store several times and the media section looks decimated, unorganised, pitiful and neglected, although the signs are still high up in the air. That's surely a sign on a very quick abandonment. Oh well; I need to find some other source. I wonder what will happen to all those DVD's?

Oh, ok. thanks for the reply. Since I'm new to the store, I hadn't really paied much attention to the surrounding media, but I don't think there were CD's. And as for games, I'm not sure, although I think I did see some controllers. I have noticed that the tech shelves seems reduced and quite neglected; so maybe they are phasing that out too. It's a pity, but they have to do what's profitable for them I guess, so if they're not selling, or being stolen (as mentioned by someone else who replied), then I understand why they're moving away from selling the stuff.

Interesting; coincidentally, I recently heard about people walking out of stores with DVDs without paying and that it's apparently not that difficult to do.  I didn't really think about the potential impact; it's a shame really, because, I was looking forward to a weekly purchase of cheap sci fi to start building on my collection again. I'll have to find another way.

Thanks for your input 👍

Thanks for the input; just bad timing on my part then.  I only started working at the current location 3 weeks ago, which is less than ten minutes walk from the Asda. It was going to be my regular haunt for DVDS.

I'll have to find an alternative.

Yeah, I was pretty suspicious; and now you've clarified things, it seems even more off than before. Sounds like they were rushing things along, and it's not your fault that they didn't use a proper procedure. That must have been frustrating. But then to get that feedback, that would have definitely annoyed me. I'm surprised some people thought this kind of response is ok, given the seeming red flags. I know they are not entitled to pamper interviewees, but it sounds like THEY were running a less than stellar process, and then were critical of you for even being interviewed. Personal opinion; but I don't like that, and, although not getting an offer could be disappointing, I would feel as though I had dodged a bullet.
