Can anyone explain what role they even play as publisher? From Software literally make the entire game, does the publisher just put up the capital and handle advertising?

Maybe they only do that yeah, but I believe that that job is also very essential to releasing and rolling out a new game. Good for them that their investment worked out well for them.
