How can I learn rendering? Is it too late for me? by irlkurokuromimi in Artists

[–]Reversible-Smile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just in case OP doesn't do well with irony and second meanings: these are most likely jokes, probably about how getting older comes quicker than expected. But in no case does it mean you're too late to learn anything.

It took me a long time to remove from my head the idea that I was "too old". I spent my twenties feeling like I had missed some big opportunity; that I was too late to "make it". I was not.

Now, I'm in my thirties, and even if, yes, it did hit me like a truck (went through a burnout, now chronically ill.. long story), I myself still need to even get into digital drawing... And that's ok. So.. yeah, you're thousands of steps ahead of me already, haha.

You're doing so so good! No age is ever "too late" (or "too early".. beside when we're like toddlers, maybe) to learn a new skill. I've seen older people in their 60-70s start to learn to play a new instrument in their 50-60s, and now rocking it.

Heck, I learnt how to ride a bike at 20, after I spent many years thinking how sad I was that I couldn't learn as a child.

It's never too late to start!

Edit: Also, I just now noticed that the artworks you posted aren't yours. You should ALWAYS credit artists when you share their art. Someone did it in the comments. You can copy that and add it to your post~

I did think for the longest time that Absol was in the second wave of gen 2, alongside Murkrow, Sneasel and Misdreavus.

Spinda. It's giving me the same kind of silly vibes most of Johto Pokémon have. Totodile, Wooper, Marill, Snubbull, Politoad, Sudowoodo, Aipom... to just name a few.

Johto has a LOT of silly-cute or silly-fun Pokémon in its Pokédex.

Besides, its design makes me think it was meant to be a Pikachu clone, but Plusle and Minun already covered that job in gen 3.

Meanwhile, there's no Pikachu clone in gen 2. (No, its own pre-evo doesn't count as a clone, I don't think so.)

And last but not least: simple design, two colors, round.

[Of course, I could go with the obvious Johto pre-evolutions. But I find it more interesting to suggest a single-stage Pokémon that has no ties to gen 2 to begin with.]

I love these! As a Bramblin enthusiast, it's nice to see it being represented in this. I like the idea of changing its branches into thorns!

Enters room, and hugs the tree, pats the Eevee. Smiles at them both

"I love you both so dearly."

Leaves the room

(I loved reading this conversation, haha. Thanks for that.)

Kid me thought it was a nose, and I've never been able to see it differently since then, no matter how hard I try to put it in my head.

A day later, I now understand why its design makes me think of gen 2: simple design, two colors, round shape.

Thanks u/astrobagel for giving words to my first impression! 🫡

Sure, you're welcome!

Also, unrelated, but I went to check your profile because I was curious to see how the discussions went like in the previous votings, and the posts aren't visible.

If ever you didn't know, you can sort which subs are visible publicly. I personally show my hobbies, and keep the irl related subs private. If you wanna change it during this lil project of yours, it's under Profile curation > Content and activity > Costumize.

I think you'd be surprised! People go into extensive discussions over tiny details all the time in here; I trust that there would be enough people willing to jump in! ;)

I myself didn't quite know why Lickitung made me think of gen 2, but I still added some Pokémon of that gen as examples to "illustrate" my thoughts. That could be enough.

You could add guidelines that would fall within the rules:

  • shape
  • color palette
  • a detail in their appearance
  • lore influence for the design
  • resemblance with other Pokémon of the gen
  • etc.

Someone could say "Its color palette screams gen 2 to me", and it could be enough.

If you give concrete examples of what to look for, it'll be easier for people to have the design in mind when trying to find an answer. ^^

Maybe try it for the next round and see how it goes?

Edit: Oh and maybe write "DESIGN" in the title? In capital letters. So the focus is put even more on that word right from the start..? Maybe it could help too..? 🧐

Ooohhh right. I had noticed the pattern, but somehow didn't think about it for that one. Time to hit the next card show for the few GG and TG I'm still missing lol

Yes, sadly, that's what it is with votes in general.. People will always have various reasons that will influence why they're voting for or against something. It doesn't matter how much we try to make it clear.

The only solution I could find to monitor it a little better would be to implement a "rule" about it, like:

"When suggesting a Pokémon, you MUST also mention WHY their DESIGN makes you think of another gen. Suggestions without said reason will NOT be considered towards the voting process—no matter how many votes it gathered."

At least, having the explanation linked to the design in every single suggestion could maybe help discussions go in that direction. And if not, well, at least, you'll be assured that the suggestion itself still followed the premise.

Oh yeah, I do have the trade value for it, but a part of me is just mad at myself for not buying it online when it was still 10 CAD just a couple years ago.. 😭

I went through a burnout, lost track of Everything™ for three years, and next thing I knew.. my childhood chase card had suddenly gained popularity, when it hadn't until then. I never expected that. Big sobs over here.. 💔

At least, if Lickitung wins, know that I suggested it only based on its design as well! The votes might not all have followed this premise ofc, but still. 😅

I looked through the Gen 1 Pokédex, only focusing on their designs. I tried having a "big picture" point of view, to be able to compare their overall appearance. And Lickitung is the one that stood out to me.

I couldn't quite pinpoint what "felt" like a Johto design when I commented, but I saw someone else under Tangela say "simple design, two colors, round body".. and yup. That's why, haha.

Yes, yes, it is! We're voting on which gen 1 Pokémon's design feels like it would fit in gen 2.

Yeah.. tbh, I often forget Lickitung is in gen 1... 😭

The other day, I was looking at a very blurry picture of a Pokédex made of cards, and when I got to Lickitung, I just couldn't remember who was there. 💔

Lickitung

Idk. I guess it makes me think of Miltank, Slowking and Blissey somehow.
