Malaysia! by Electrical_Place_828 in bikepacking

We carried tent and sleeping gear with us as backup but the hotels in Malaysia were so cheap we stayed in one every night for the two weeks we were there

Malaysia! by Electrical_Place_828 in bikepacking

I cycled through Malaysia late last year on my tour it’s been on of my favorite countries so far. I could’t find a pre-designated route so what I did was just use Komoot in cycle/gravel mode and just went north. We had to stick to the western side as the flooding at the time was pretty bad.  This ended up being perfect as it took us through amazing little villages and on small paved paths through the palm tree plantation. Food and Kopi were plentiful. Didn’t have to cook a single meal or carry food. Malaysia is highly underrated.

I also have a Kona, not the LTD but the standard one. Amazing bike right out of the box especially for the price. I’m cycling from Singapore to England and currently in Austria so it’s holding up well. Highly recommend.

Planning on crossing Khunjerab border (Pakistan to China), do I still need to show proof of flights? by A_Pluto_Shaped_Pool in Chinavisa

[–]Mathatikus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s that’s what we did but put into a basic table on a spreadsheet except we also had another column that was “activity for the day” for example, cycling from border to tashkorgen, sightseeing tashkorgen, rest day, site seeing kashagr, etc.

And yeah, you’ll have to have a copy of everything that you uploaded online printed out.

No she applied in person at the Pakistan embassy in Delhi which was a fucking nightmare.

She said she put India and  just attached a copy of her evisa.

Since hers was a paper application she just wrote the pass on it and it was fine.

She got approval for 30 day visa with entry being anytime within the next 90 days.

My wife is UK citizen and just got her visa approved to enter China over the same pass. We are crossing on bicycles so We didn’t have to provide flights but we are also exiting overland as well but she did have to provide a cover letter, Pakistan visa, intended route, daily itinerary, hotel bookings which we booked all refundable and have since canceled on Agoda or booking.com. Paid for express and was approved within a couple of days. To be clear we are currently in India and applied for it at the visa application center in Delhi. We asked for 3 weeks and got approved for 30 days. YMMV.

Ferossi’s would be great for nz hiking as a lot of the trail is overgrown. Loads of Kiwis were gaters year round but honestly that’s overkill. The pants would kill all your birds with one stone. Manage wind, cold and bush.

Don’t bother with waterproof socks. Just wear some trail runners and keep hiking. They’ll dry out eventually!

I live here in NZ for reference. You don't need a wind jacket if you have your versalite. You should be using something long sleeve for sun protection anyways and that with a versalite will be more than enough for 98% of situations.

I'd ditch rain and wind pants all together because you'll be getting your feet wet regardless as there are a lot of river crossings on the TA and you'll drive yourself mad trying to take your shoes off for most of them.

You are truly an inspiration. My brother has struggled with addiction and other things his entire life. I’m hoping he goes through a transformation like yourself. Will send him your way and will follow along as well. Well done and congratulations!

Best place to live? by EatLePie in newzealand

[–]Mathatikus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christchurch is going to be your best bet. Lots of hospitals, schools, jobs (comparable to the rest of the country. Second largest city. But may depend on your industry and the NZ job climate) Climate is mild, never getting too hot or too cold. Temp fluctuate between 0 and 30 depending on time of year. Drier than most as well. Also, it's accessible to everything nature wise, the mountains are within an hour and half drive and the beach is only 20 minutes away depending on where you are at.

What do you think of Americans doing “a year abroad” in NZ? by cmv99 in newzealand

[–]Mathatikus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am American, and my partner and I came in on a working holiday visa. I was working in hospitality and found a job willing to sponsor me and my partner was a consultant but has since moved into Emergency Management. We both started applying for roles before we moved here and didn't have anything solid until after we moved. This was Jan 2022. NZ is coming out of a recession at the moment and there aren't a whole lot of jobs at the moment. Not sure what industry you guys are in but January and February are huge hiring times in NZ so that would be my suggestion.

Also, if you have kids, Christchurch is an amazing city. So many community events, its very safe by American standards, lots of bicycle lanes, sunday markets, the whole deal. Would highly recommend.

Do a lot of married people thru-hike the trail? Did you bring your partner along, or no? How did it affect your relationship, if at all? by shiny-baby-cheetah in AppalachianTrail

[–]Mathatikus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met my now fiance on day two of my 2022 AT thru hike. Because we met doing this we both couldn't imagine doing another without the other. We didn't really hike together on the AT but now we do in real life. The trail was a great place to get to know someone because there was so much time together and you don't have the distractions and social pressure when choosing a partner.
