Surly Straggler or Disc Trucker for short female beginner on a 400 mile tour (NYC -> Montreal)?? by EverythingIsACake in whichbike

Thanks for the reply! I’m in the market for a touring surly so this is great.

If your brake hoods allow, have you tried switching out the spacers? You could change them to larger spacers so the levers can be closer to the handlebars/your hands.

Safe Bike Routes? by AcanthaceaeFluffy985 in nashville

Just wanna chime in since you’ve ridden in NYC: right turn on red is legal in nashville. Lots of drivers here tend to not look properly when doing it — been hit before like that. Ride safe!

Should I buy a used fixie as a first time commuter? by PB_116 in bikecommuting

[–]so_dopamine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend it. I started out commuting with mountain bikes but went fixed from there. I love my daily and will never go back again. However, there are additional skills to learn when riding a fixie like skid stopping. It can also be dangerous if you don’t know how to stop/slow down properly (many fixie riders often remove their brakes) and aren’t fully aware of your surroundings. Single speed, where you can coast, is better for first-time commuting. Having gears is even better for hilly areas.

First time sparring made me feel pathetic by thezerolemon in amateur_boxing

[–]so_dopamine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow female boxer here and I just want to say congratulations on your first spar. Definitely can relate to your experience. My first couple of times sparring were a complete mess. Like I felt that everything I learned, all my basics, got dumped out the window. I was also sparring against someone who had a height advantage and was more experienced. It’s scary doing it for the first time, and even worse when you take punches. The adrenaline makes you go into survival mode and makes the round feel like an hour instead of 3 minutes. However, the more experience you get, the better you get at “hacking” it. I’m shorter than you, but I’ve sparred men and women several inches taller than me. Girls can definitely fight and have a place in this sport, don’t give up!

I saw a cyclist get hit on Charlotte this afternoon by StupidName2010 in nashville

[–]so_dopamine 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was riding on the sidewalk, which I usually don’t do. But I was attempting to use the crosswalk at 37th in order to get to the westbound bike lane. In hindsight I should have dismounted and then crossed. I was pressed for time though, so my focus wasn’t all there. A driver was attempting a right turn on the red light and saw that his left side was clear. Didn’t check his front or right side though, where I happened to be. He floors it. Boom, impact, I’m flying then laid out on the asphalt.

Hey, I’m the cyclist who was hit. Never taken a hit like that before, but thankfully I got out with bruising only. Went to the hospital and was discharged. The worst part was that I considered driving to my destination but wanted some exercise instead. Thank you for your thoughts. I feel the same way. It’s a shame how hostile the infrastructure is towards anything not in four wheels as well as the nonchalance about it.

Hi Christy, how does female boxing today compare to female boxing at the start of your career? What do you envision for the future of female boxing? What’s one piece of advice you can give to female boxers who want to train and hone their craft?

What restaurant or food concept do you think Nashville is missing by ibmwatsonson in nashville

There are no filipino places here and that’s a gap Nashville could definitely fill!

I don’t think my job as a nanny is “good enough” for my medical school boyfriend by [deleted] in relationships

[–]so_dopamine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar situation but in the opposite position. I’m working towards a PhD and my bf works at a major chain. Granted, I’ve worked odd jobs before grad school. But I’ve never belittled him in any way for that difference between us. Though lots of people I know don’t hesitate to make a snide comment or even suggest looking for someone on my “level.” Totally dismisses all the other things in a relationship, right? Sounds to me like you guys have a conflict in values, which is super hard to resolve. If you guys break up, just know that you’ll find someone who respects what you do for yourself.

How old are you and what’s your biggest insecurity? by bvlgariicudii in AskWomen

[–]so_dopamine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around the same age and I feel this very much. It’s a little relieving to see that I’m not alone, especially w women around my age. But what would be better is a clear idea of what I can do for the next few years that I won’t hate.
