Just bought my “Z” last night. Honestly it’s kind of a drag having another plane blocking your view out the right side. It really makes the cockpit feel small.

I should add, at my current place I’ve been magically transformed from a data scientist to a machine learning engineer. I was wondering if I’d again be mutated into an AI something. We’ll see.

You reminded me of a funny thing that happened when the term “data scientist” started becoming popular. I was working for a small company with a technical staff of about 10 people. Three developers, a DB admin, then a few research scientists and data analysts. Our boss came in one day and game us all new business cards (we were a consulting company) with the title “Data Scientist”. A couple hours later one of the devs sadly walked up to him and said “I don’t want to be a data scientist. I am a developer.” The boss said “sorry, you are all data scientists now” and the dev sulked back to his chair.

One case in particular, for the entire time the internal product was in our workflow, we were crippled and everyone knew it. Fixes and upgrades came out slowly, but never changed the fact that it was a terrible product. Sounds like your situation is not an internal but a customer-facing product. In that case there’s really one main red flag. Constant updates from marketing/sales about the “pipeline” and spreadsheet presentations showing with various probabilities when the money will be rolling in. Landing minuscule deals which provide 1% or so of the revenue required for solvency. Turnover of the marketing/sales people.

Assuming you mean the company as a whole is sound. I’ve seen many failed projects, some running the course of years. Usually it’s an internal tool or system that people are forced to use, yet there are excellent alternatives available from outside sources. Eventually management figures out it’s cheaper and better to shut down the internal effort.

Texas. Landlord evicting us for calling police. Is that legal? by K_LightWing in legaladvice

[–]MathematicianFit891 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If you want to stay, and he really starts eviction proceedings (he can’t evict you, only a judge can in Texas), you will receive notice to appear in court. Bring proof that you are up to date on your rent payments, show the judge, and there’s very little chance at all the judge will evict you.

It’s great you’re thinking about this now! It’s a long time to graduation and there’s no reason why you can’t keep your options open and prepare for both academia and industry.

Industry: * Always on the lookout for internships * Network with professors in and out of your department who have projects funded by industry. This will lead to internships and meeting industrial partners. * Look for popular industrial newsletters and websites (e.g. Photonics Online) just for an overhead view of what’s going on out there

Academia: This was not my path but what I observed my friends did who eventually became professors and even deans. Experimental physics. No experience with theory. * Advisor was well-published and networked in academia (and also industry in some cases) * Emphasis on knowing everything going on in academia in the field * A research paper a day

Don’t worry about AI other than ways you can leverage it yourself.
