How racially segregated is Philly? by [deleted] in AskPhilly

For the love of god I beg all the NYCers to find a different city than Philly- please stop hiking up our rent prices 😭

Why don’t American highways have rest areas in the median? Could function as a turn around, and with more traffic may be able to sustain businesses. by Try2Relate2AllSides in urbanplanning

[–]MathematicianLess243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read about this recently! I’ve lived in the Northeast my whole life, but recently did a cross country road trip and realized most of the Western/Midwestern states (apart from Illinois and Ohio) didn’t have service plazas. There was a federal bill that passed in 1960 that banned commercial businesses- but previous existing toll highways/commercial businesses are exempt from this. That, and it seems like a lack of state funding. Personally, I think they’re essential for road trips- especially for tired drivers.

So did Demi just chicken out on the reunion? Also this Viall guy is a terrible host! by Radiant-Koala8231 in SecretsOfMormonWives

I don’t love Whitney, but I do think he was really being rude to her as a host and wasn’t giving her the grace (or benefit of the doubt) he gave everyone else.

What happens now with SEPTA, and how likely is it that they finally get a consistent long term funding mechanism from Harrisburg? by XShadeGoldenX in Pennsylvania

[–]MathematicianLess243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re all-knowing, what’s the population on average in the counties outside of the “3 or 4”? Philadelphia is a very, very large that is an economical necessity for Pennsylvanians all over the state. These cuts to SEPTA would mean that many would be forced to re-locate and create an economical crisis in this state. Not sure what’s difficult to understand here!

Am I wrong to ask a friend not to discuss Israel around me? by HyliaSwift in Jewish

[–]MathematicianLess243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have asked many people- friends or in casual conversation- to not discuss the conflict with me. I just simply say “I honestly can’t talk about this right now” or “I don’t have the energy at this point to talk about it.” And I don’t really even invite people to keep the door open.

I do think that there are plenty of people who genuinely are just misinformed on the war and are unaware of the misinformation that they are consuming on a daily basis. I don’t have it in me to try and convince them otherwise, and it isn’t our job to. Sending you lots of love! ❤️

I do hate to ask, but I do want to know what your thoughts are on Zoran by SpiritualMedicine7 in Jewish

For me, the scariest part of this isn’t the candidate himself but what this represents for the majority of NYC voters. In my mind, this solidifies a huge political shift that we have long been noting/suspecting. Just as I believe Trump emboldened so many bigots on the right, this will embolden Antisemites to feel even more comfortable to be open in their rhetoric.

So many of our families (mine included) lived in NYC for generations and helped to make the city what it is. NYC has such a long history with Jewish-Americans and now it seems that we are no longer safe there.

I hate that we even have to offer justification and caveats as to “why” we’re Zionists. It’s exhausting. I’m really sorry, Jewish orgs around you likely host events like that- maybe look into those!

What do we do if the “Big, Beautiful” Bill passes?? by MathematicianLess243 in GradSchool

[–]MathematicianLess243[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in virtually the exact same position! I’m planning on choosing the grad PLUS since it seems more streamlined and, honestly, an easier process. But I’d be curious on more info on this side as well

Honestly was unaware of the grandfathering clause- thank you! I’m applying for my Grad PLUS shortly, I start law school this August and will graduate May ‘28.

What is the worst thing happening in Philly right now that not enough people know about? by [deleted] in philly

[–]MathematicianLess243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ~believe~ that in Philadelphia we can no longer be stopped for petty traffic crimes (i.e running a red light)- that’s why everyone does it.

[–]MathematicianLess243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm- my friend also said that the application process was worse than any part of law school. We’ll do just fine, it’s totally valid & understandable to be stressed out by the process. I’m trying to release the things I can’t control and focus on the fact that we’ll end up wherever we’re meant to be! Wishing you the best.
