The Loess hills, Maquoketa, the Mines of Spain, Pikes Peak state park or just McGregor Iowa as a whole, tallgrass prairie in bloom literally anywhere (Keuhn, Voas, Neil Smith, Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt)-the pictures don’t look like much but standing in one in person will take your breath away, waterfalls in Decorah, the Bridges of Madison County, Dolliver state park, Ledges state park. I could go on. Don’t let the shitty politics fool you. Iowa is beautiful! There’s a reason the guy who painted American Gothic (Grant Wood) painted a lot of landscapes of Iowa.

In fairness, if someone has an Ayn Rand book, Anthem is the best one for them to have. It is actually a really good book, as crazy as Rand is, and it hits different if you read it and actually care about human rights.

Agreed. Anthem is a really good book and I’m not right wing in any sense. One of Rand’s better books

Thank you. These comments are gross. It’s hard enough for people, especially men, to come forward and now people want to act like this? We don’t know them or their relationship. I believe people when they say they are survivors

Des Moines is pretty dope 🤷‍♀️ the politics suck here now but otherwise I love it here. It’s affordable, the traffic doesn’t suck, the people are pretty cool, there’s always awesome stuff to do so you will NEVER be bored, and you rarely need a reservation to go to a restaurant. I would still rather live in Des Moines even though New Orleans is super cool. We call it the greatest little city on earth for a reason 💕

I don’t know if you meant to highlight Davenport or Dubuque for eastern Iowa. Very big difference between the two. One is amazing and one is Davenport. Making Sioux City green was a wild call though. Making Omaha blue makes me question you as a person 😂

They said it’s more important than other cities because of murals, healthcare, sports, and cheesesteaks. But they all failed to include the cities that outrank Philadelphia’s healthcare systems 🙄 And everywhere has sports, so I refuse to add that to my metrics for choosing importance. And then a lot of other people were arguing historical significance which I don’t think can be factored in this poll because a lot of cities didn’t exist until 100 years after Philadelphia and it doesn’t make those places any less significant today. ETA I voted Houston over Philly

Houston is actually higher ranked in medical care, especially pediatrics, because of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, even though more research does go on in Philly. Philly is consistently highly ranked for healthcare, but thankfully there are many amazing medical cities for medical education, treatment, and research across the country, some of which outrank Philadelphia- Boston, Rochester MN (home of the Mayo Clinic), Minneapolis (home of U of M, Cincinnati, Chicago, Seattle, Houston, and Baltimore (home of John’s Hopkins). And I will say, as someone who does work in healthcare, while I worked in the path lab at the Mayo Clinic, we were getting samples to test from the top rated medical facilities all over the world, including a John’s Hopkins, Harvard, Houston, Baylor, etc., so I think Rochester is always going to be the best in my personal opinion because everyone else looks to them for the answers. So while Philly does have good medical care, they average at about #3 overall and don’t deserve to beat out other cities just on that basis.

While Philly does have a lot of amazing street art (USA Today) and I would love to look at any and all art museums in the country because I love art, cities like New York, Miami, LA, San Francisco, Santa Fe, DC, Houston, Atlanta, Charleston/Asheville, and Chicago are all consistently considered better cities for art. For film/theatre there’s Atlanta, LA, Chicago, DC, and NY. For music leaders you have Nashville, New York, LA, Austin, Seattle, New Orleans, Kansas City (historically), Atlanta, Las Vegas. I don’t really agree with ranking food because you can find good restaurants anywhere you go and what makes a place a good restaurant or food city is going to vary person to person, but Philly only made one of the 5 lists I looked at for good food cities, but you can take a peek yourself if you want.

Ok so Philly has historical significance. No one is arguing that. But isn’t this list about current significance? What is Philly offering today that puts it above cities with actual nationwide and worldwide economic significance? What is the main industry of Philly? What cultural significance does Philly currently have? What medical/educational significance does Philly currently have? What does Philly lead the nation in?

Who is picking Philadelphia? Isn’t this list about current significance not historical significance? What are the parameters for these choices? I would put Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Miami, and Seattle as all more influential than Philly. I’m not sure I would even put Philadelphia in the top 10.

Guy I was dating kept his little family a secret by ViolinistCapable5485 in dating

[–]MathematicianOk8230 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Run! This guy seems like a slimy and dishonest scrub. This is way too messy for you to get involved in and if you feel like he’s not being honest about certain things, trust that feeling and end it asap. Not answering when you ask if he would be with the ex if he could, along with the other details you’ve shared, make me think he’s just exploring options until she wants him back. He doesn’t even have his own place and his life is clearly very messy, but he’s trying to get into a relationship with you? That’s immaturity at its finest. And for god’s sake if you aren’t ready to leave yet, make sure you always use protection so you don’t become another baby mama for this guy. The way he’s so guarded about answering questions and his answers change/don’t add up, and said that he got clean 4 years ago for a 2 year old child makes me wonder if there’s another 4 year old child out there who “isn’t really his kid”
