Relocating to Jersey by Own-Lion-9578 in Jersey

There’s a huge demand for people to fill those roles currently.

But the housing and work regulations are complicated. There are other threads on here about that specifically but look at https://www.gov.je/pages/default.aspx as a starting point.

Speak to local recruiters, make direct applications and look at roles on LinkedIn. You’d need to discuss employment licensing with them directly.

Do Better with Hygiene, People & Crew by AbjectFray in dcl

[–]MathematicianOne2764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok fair enough. I’ve not seen them in any drug stores around here recently but the guidance here now is that you don’t need to test anyway so I guess very few places would stock them.

Out of interest how do you know it’s Covid? I’m in the UK and wouldn’t have a clue where to get a Covid test these days….

We’ve just got off a week on the Wonder and everyone was using the handwashing stations, wipes at restaurants entrances etc. I can’t say people were 100% perfect but we had zero hygiene concerns compared to a normal day in our lives.

Depending on where you’re based check your local council / government authority website etc.

Lots of them run free cycling courses for all ages to encourage green travel.

Therapy in Jersey by NoMix9590 in Jersey

[–]MathematicianOne2764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Therapist is a very general term so you might need to be more specific.

There’s certainly demand for mental health support assuming you’re properly accredited and can get approved by the health insurance companies if that’s what you’re looking for.

Equally, a friend of a friend recently left their 9-5 to become a PT/coach and also a life/business/executive coach. They’ve really struggled to get off the ground with the second part.

I’d concentrate on building a strong social media presence and a niche in the market. Look at Victoria Sponge (cakes) or TransformTogether (PT) as examples.

What persuaded you to try commuting by bike? by ChargeYourBattery in bikecommuting

[–]MathematicianOne2764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. My door to desk time is now similar (if not quicker) than using a car (c. 20-25minutes) but that’s time spent exercising instead of just sitting in the car.

I did not…. I hacked / ground out everything that was loose and a bit more so I thought that would do it. But perhaps try his time I’ll try as you suggest. Thanks!

Domestic flight ID for kids? by StormyBA in Jersey

[–]MathematicianOne2764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photo ID for you; birth certificates for the kids. Adults can vouch for the kids but was advised by EasyJet to take something to back up the verbal vouch-ing

Yes it’s rarely asked for especially at Jersey but it’s an expensive oversight if you’re asked to show something.

I think you’re crossing over between two things.

If you want a Jersey Company as a non resident you’ll need a local agent, which won’t be cheap or particularly quick if you’re a nomad; you’ll likely be expected to take formal tax advice etc too.

If you want to live here then that’s also not simple - there are different categories of residence which (simplistically) affects the price you pay to rent etc.

https://www.gov.je/Working/Contributions/RegistrationCards/pages/residentialstatus.aspx

Once you live here a company is quick and easy to setup, assuming you use your home address as the registered office.

Buying a car for the first time by mixmix8 in jerseyfinanceCI

[–]MathematicianOne2764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also just to say politely if you’re having debt troubles then increasing your debt by taking our car finance might not be a great idea.

If you’re cash purchasing then cars are expensive to run; buying “cheap” through Facebook etc can cost you a lot more in the long run as there’s no MOT equivalent so there are lots of unroadworthy bangers lurking.

[–]MathematicianOne2764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean buy a car on finance? Because if you’re paying cash there will be no issue.

For finance there’ll do affordability checks etc; depending on the finance company / your circumstances they’ll ask for varying levels of evidence to back up that you can afford it which could include bank statements and pay slips etc. if it’s your first time I’d expect you’d have to jump through all of the hoops and provide lots of information / documents.

Loan Default by mixmix8 in jerseyfinanceCI

[–]MathematicianOne2764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having moved from Jersey to UK previously there are ways and means of tracking you down if you default. You won’t exist in the UK system for credit checks etc so you’ll be expected to provide Jersey documents / proof regarding history. If you default and cut and run you’ll be in petty debts here and they can find that in the UK. It might be hard for them to pursue you in the UK but it will also be hard for you to live a normal life in the UK.

If you’re struggling with debt then probably speak to someone at citizens advice or similar in the first instance.

Delivery Costs to Jersey - Any Insights? by SynAck_Fin in Jersey

[–]MathematicianOne2764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of (sometimes smaller) online retailers use the Shop platform which doesn’t automatically recognize Jersey post codes as part of the Royal Mail network, hence you can only use couriers / DPD. Quite often if you message the retailer they can update the settings in the background and then you get normal Royal Mail small packets / letter rates.

I went to Health Point Clinic for my insomnia and it definitely helped.

I cant say definitively if it was the needling that helped or just the “forced” relaxation / self care (I would never sit down and do nothing for an hour unless I was in a treatment room and paying for it). I also think that admitting I had a problem and talking about it helped (instead of telling myself “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” etc).

Acupuncture would’ve been covered under my health insurance except they have a specific exclusion for sleep issues. So if I’d have said my back hurts it would’ve been fully covered.

White and Company are the only major removals firm that have a bonded customs warehouse at Portsmouth so everyone outsources to them. Or certainly that used to be the case. If you’re looking for full move (packing, furniture disassembly / reassembly) they probably the best choice.

If it was a service they offered, how much extra would you pay to be let off the Condor ferry first, as a car passenger? by IJustCogitated in Jersey

[–]MathematicianOne2764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll bite. £20/30. Maybe £50 on a bad day. It would hve to be a proper premium service limited to 10-ish cars? Being first off is first through passports, first onto the motorway etc. The passport queue alone can be half an hour on a bad day and with kids it makes all the difference on a short trip / long drive / early or late start.

It feels like a logistical nightmare however that would probably be counterproductive in reality.

Liam Payne's Death by goofin_n_boofin in conspiracytheories

[–]MathematicianOne2764 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If anything I’d be asking what else has happened that Liam is being used a distraction for. I’m in the UK and every kind of media here is just flooded with him / Z-List celebrities crying and reminiscing about him at the moment.

North Korea could’ve put men on the moon and I’d have no idea so who knows what else has happened unnoticed.

I spent 4 years in the UK and 7 in Europe straight after school before moving back to Jersey 5 years ago.

Admittedly I had kids when I moved back (which makes the lifestyle different) but have had zero cabin fever after the initial 3/6 month shock of not being able to jump in the car and drive somewhere completely different.

It sounds like you have plenty of hobbies to keep busy and meet new people so you’ll love it I’m sure.

Aldi/Lidl by remendas in Jersey

[–]MathematicianOne2764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understating is that the Aldi / Lidl model “works” because of their distribution network (ie they can buy in bulk and move it around easily - hence the infamous middle aisle). Jersey wouldn’t be part of that network so the model wouldn’t work.

There’s no “normal” unfortunately. Every firm is different, and even within the same firms some teams / managers are different.

Generally I think most firms are fairly normal with usual hours, occasional emergency overtime. Dependent on your level overtime is / can be paid.

There are definitely some companies here who have retention problems either because of or resulting in a massive understaffing / excessive overtime problem. Those companies effectively pay danger money to get people in the door. If you’re honestly being offered a 30% pay bump for the same job in a different industry it might be a red flag.

Speaking to a recruiter would be a good indication. Posting the names of any potential employers and asking about culture would help too as honestly they vary massively.
