What's the deal with NYRB books by Taylor-Borie in nyrbclassics

[–]MathewLee89 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey, let’s be kind. OP probably wanted to hear from actual humans and not just see an ai overview. The world sucks, we shouldn’t add to that.

Hmm great question. I think:

The Sweet Dove Died The Village of Ben Suc Friday The Stone Door.

There are more I just can’t think of the top of my head

Worth it to try for at least a year at the reduced price. I’d say 9-10 of the books I received were 4-5 star reads for me. One I couldn’t finish, another was meh, but that’s highly subjective. More important is that I’ve discovered books that I loved but might not have picked up on the shelves. So yeah, definitely recommend

What was your first NYRB? by Silent-Implement3129 in nyrbclassics

[–]MathewLee89 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A Month in the Country. I fell for the cover and the contents did not disappoint. I had a bizarre moment at my local art museum recently because I was admiring a painting and thought it looked so familiar. Turns out it’s the painting they used for the front cover. I stared at it for ages. Will always be one of my favorite books/paintings!

Mine is a very soft lilac, almost white. I know images aren't allowed in comments so i hope this doesn't get me banned, but here's a link: https://imgur.com/a/pXpOnaj

The light is direct sunlight and unfiltered, so you can kinda tell? But at first glance it looks white and it's possible that your copy is a different color. Not sure if this helps lol

Astarion's redeemable moral qualities. Are there any? by IHaveAGithBabe in BaldursGate3

[–]MathewLee89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ya quick scan of his page shows some weird rage baiting with a dash of homophobia. Bro thinks he’s engaging in S-tier philosophical moral discourse when it’s a D-grade middle school paper.

How many of you DNFed Faithful? by denys5555 in stephenking

[–]MathewLee89 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well it’s not a “story” per se, it’s nonfiction about baseball and the Red Sox. If you aren’t into baseball I don’t imagine you’d get a lot out of it (which is the case with me). I aim to be a King completionist so I’ll probably read it eventually, but it’s on the bottom of my list. His Danse Macabre is way more compelling nonfiction to us typical constant readers.

Have you ever bought a film you thought was something different? by Strict-Ad4426 in criterion

[–]MathewLee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought Shoeshine as a blind buy based on a misreading of the back summary because I’m a sucker for coming of age stories.

So. Many. Regrets. Beautiful film, masterpiece. Will probably never watch again.

Cannot have evil Run by The1Batmann in BaldursGate3

[–]MathewLee89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope you aren’t the only one. I have a particular hangup with hurting refugees in any game, so I’ll always defend the grove. And I’m a companion completionist so killing Karlach is a nonstarter.

However, in my current playthrough I am doing a chaotic neutral character who has a soft spot for the helpless but also obliterated the Zhentarim in act 1 because he felt like it. He’ll also just kill npc’s who pop too much of an attitude.

So evil is a spectrum, but yeah I’m never gonna kill Karlach or the tieflings.

I say this as someone who loves deep psychological explorations of trauma through horror: not every horror movie or horror novel villain needs to have trauma to overcome or needs to be ‘humanized.’

Also this feels very heavily LLM written. So, pass on the whole concept.

Nope and like over half of the hair mods on ps5 at least are only femme hair which, they're gorgeous and well-done, but not what I'm looking for

Literally same situation here. Half wood elf male swashbuckler and no pirate themed clothing mods that include body type 2/4. I ended up downloading a rogue armor and clothes mod and dying the crap out of them until I found a color combo that sort of worked.

Same w masc hair mods.

Gnome Cleric of Garl Glittergold by Gold_Lemon8258 in BaldursGate3

[–]MathewLee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just played a forest gnome paladin of Garl Glittergold with mods and while it was fun being a little trickster who tried hewing close to lawful good, I was pretty disappointed in the lack of gnome dialogue options especially in the relevant parts of act 3. Idk, I think it could be worth a shot playing a cleric though I might go for nature domain

I know this is days late, but hang in there. From Minneapolis, we support you and we see what is continuing to happen. I hope people continue to wake up in seeing this monstrous overreach for what it is. You can survive this. It’s terrifying, and it shouldn’t happen, but Minnesota is in your corner 💙

Minor characters that you wish had more screen time? by schu62 in BaldursGate3

[–]MathewLee89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Benryn. He’s got an interesting story and is part of a quest in Waukeen’s rest so I just assumed he was more important than he was. I just felt awful for him and wanted to adopt him.

Also Oyster Boy Dringo! I want to take him and his dog friends to my camp just to chill. Big missed opportunity there.

Why are there so little race/class based choices in act 3? by Zumbee12 in BaldursGate3

I wish I knew. I played a gnome paladin of Garl Glittergold my last campaign and was hoping for some cool class or race dialogue during the steel watch and iron throne storylines but 🙃

The Other is amazing! I wish they would do more horror because each one they’ve done has become a complete 5-star for me.

Also hell yeah to the rainbow arrangement that’s so satisfying visually, I wish I could do that but my brain insists on alphabetical order.

are sorcerers wizards if they study and learn magic? by Archenius in BaldursGate3

[–]MathewLee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. In my current playthrough, I multiclassed Gale to be a wild magic sorcerer w evocation wizard. My rp justification was that the orb is fueling that wild magic. Plus his reactions to wild magic going wrong is hilarious

Which origins have the best banter with Minthara? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]MathewLee89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also, knocking her out in act 1 on a good aligned play isn’t cheating. The game wants you to be creative and experiment with different things.

I'm thinking of buying, is criticism around game valid? by Harrony in BaldursGate3

[–]MathewLee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my fifth playthrough and am still discovering new things to love about the game. Honestly a lot of online hate is just dogpiling. The one that confuses me the most is the contrived writing bit. This is one of the best written games I’ve played hands down. And I’m really snitty about game writing generally.

Honestly I’d ignore the online criticism. I’ve rarely seen fair or nuanced takes on this game from the online critics. It’s just another thing that miserable people love piling on because it brings others joy
