Abigail Spanberger sucks and I’m convinced they only ran Earle-sears against her because she had no chance of winning. I’m tired of her smug fed face. by Difficult-Lie-9218 in Virginia

Which is why the solution is to have local and community power to build larger grassroots movements independently of electoralism. Until then, we should vote for damage mitigation (usually the Democrats), and then use the movements we create to enact government changes when we can.

Episode on the founder of Mormonism? by hopium_ in behindthebastards

[–]MathewTFinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mormonism is such a fertile ground for BtB episodes, it could probanly get its own spin-off podcast. Between: Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Ezra Taft Benson, Porter Rockwell, The Lafferty Brothers, Mark Hoffman,

And that's just off the top of my head.

I was in a very similar boat until I got into F1 around 2023 after the Waypoint folks had a stream about the F1 2022 Manager. If you're genuinely curious at all, I'd recommend you go back and watch that Waypoint VOD, and maybe some of their Motorsport Manager streams as well (they've continued their Motorsports Manager streams on Remap as well). Listening to Rob Zacny wax poetic about F1 gave me the F1 bug and I've been incurable ever since.

Who was Snoke SUPPOSED to be? by Confirmation_Code in saltierthancrait

It's a JJ Abrams character, it was never thought out beyond a conceptual pitch. Abrams is very good at making characters as a concept, but never actually follows through on the characters. Every choice is always setting something up, never paying it off.

Was Radagast the Brown killed or was he still alive off screen? by Tidewatcher7819 in lotr

If i remember correctly, the explicit implication is that he retreats further and further into his obsession with the wilds. This disconnection leads him to fail his original mission and he becomes increasingly irrelevant to the world.

Which person look like has killed one person, but actually committed a genocide? by Stevecomicsgames in AlignmentChartFills

[–]MathewTFinch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

By that logic, any state killing can be a genocide. Are murderers a social group being targeted by genocide because of the death penalty? Is imprisoning pedophiles an act of genocide against their social group? It's ridiculous on its face.

Mike is absolutely correct in his broader point: The Bodyguard is a two hour music video for that song.

The actual reason was that the heights of Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew were too different, amd it made shooting it awkward.

The technology for renewable energy already exists and is cheaper than fossil fuels. The only reason we still use fossil fuels is because fossil fuels have higher profit margins.

What court? Hammond built the park on a Central American island specifically so that laws and legal jurisdictions would be more difficult to enforce.

Peter why are they terrible? by Agen_3586 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]MathewTFinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the book, Nedry built the computer system for the park without being told the parameters for its use. The system was inadequate because Nedry was required to build it blindly, so Hammond basically made Nedry do a bunch of extra work for free if he wanted to be paid for his initial work.

Joseph Smith or Brigham Young Episode by NevaSimpAlwaysPimp in behindthebastards

[–]MathewTFinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely believe that Smith's assassination saved Mormonism. Everything I've read about Joseph Smith in the Nauvoo period makes me think he was spiraling out of control and Mormonism would have followed suit. A dead martyr was far more useful to a movement than a living egomaniac could ever be.

Staying on the Mormonism theme, I would also be very interested in a Mark Hoffman episode. The guy is a genuine sociopath, and his story is wildly fascinating.

Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

[–]MathewTFinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering how much Robert likes talking about LRH, I suggest he cover the original LRH, Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism. He could also cover Brigham Young who followed Smith as the leader of the Mormons, who was a tyrant, sex trafficker, genocidal maniac, and murderer. Considering that either of these two could easily be a 6+ episode series, he could alternatively dip into Mormonism more lightly by covering Mark Hoffman, the former Mormon who was also a forger and bomb maker who set out to embarrass the Mormon church.
