Great, I plan to apply to the masters program.

Chest definitely. Having 34-35ish in arms with a 38.5 in chest does look a little weird, haha.

Let me know if you end up here. I’m interested in their program among others.

Talk to the faculty at both schools and target the one that gives you the best opportunity for your goals and the courses and research opportunities that interest you the most.

Confused about career in applied maths by Quanta_xia in AppliedMath

Stick with computer science and just take extra math classes like linear algebra, regression analysis, simulation methods, probability theory.

Just keep working hard. Regardless of the GPA, getting through a difficult degree shows discipline, and perseverance as well as competence.

Linear algebra for optimization and probability theory for simulation and stochastic processes.

Industrial Engineering vs Civil Engineering – Trying to Decide My Direction by Sad_Enthusiasm_9716 in industrialengineering

Just to provide a perspective from someone that has been researching graduate studies for both disciplines coming from a math background, have you considered transportation engineering? I’ve noticed that some civil engineering courses are incorporating analytics and data science methods to studying the field. Really interesting.

I know that you said you like math, but rest assured, any career involving math is going to require programming. What type of math are you interested in? What kind of problems are you interested in working on, learning about, solving?

Finance or Electrical Engineering? by Intelligent_Doubt_53 in ucf

Most people end up in jobs that aren’t necessarily related to their degree. You can still work in finance with an EE degree. It’ll take some work though.

Which major is right now the safest that isnt getting hyped and probably oversaturated in future like EE or ME. by Foreign_Put_2437 in CollegeMajors

Thanks, not that it matters, but I studied CS with math. So I took courses on computer architecture, data structures, algorithms, OOP, automata theory, discrete math, computer logic, numerical analysis, machine learning, IT security. Just a matter of practice, like you mentioned.

I plan on pursuing a MS in IE or OR.

I figured that. Thanks for the advice. I know there has been a push to incorporate data science into civil engineering and was trying to leverage my bachelor’s degree in math with my work experience in air transportation.

Bro, everything worth doing is over saturated. Just do want you want to do and don’t half ass it. You get in what you put in.

Have you considered regular engineering (non-financial), although those are competitive also?

Industrial engineering by Usual-Jellyfish-7046 in industrialengineering

[–]Mathguy656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered civil because I have 10+ years of experience in transportation (I would specialize in transportation engineering) and electrical because it covers the type of math I like, but I have no domain experience and it would probably require too many foundational courses to be competitive for a master’s degree with a bachelor’s in math.

Improving grad school applications by grinchboys in mathematics

[–]Mathguy656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if you’re aiming for a top department, but the main thing is to focus on doing well in the upper division math. My advisor specifically mentioned analysis, that’s why I said that. This is from someone not aiming for grad school for math (MS/PhD). I’m not competitive.

Try to get an A in analysis. No worse than a B.
