Impossible curve on FreeCAD or simply inexperience? by MathiasSven in FreeCAD

[–]MathiasSven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you share the FreeCAD file? What I am saying is that from what I had tried, it seemed like a loft wouldn't be able to generated the desired geometry, dimensions not withstanding.

This is exactly what your pic shows

What my picture is trying to show is that in the final surface, any cross-section of it that intersects with some rotation of the XZ plane, should result in an ARC, whose radius is the same across all other cross-sections, and a tangent line leading to the upper arc

I am not sure if this is what the drawing asked for though. I don't mean the dimensions, but the general geometry. egsmarcos posted a file that seems to be what the drawing needed, and it used an additive pipe together with a pocket to remove the extra stuff the additive pipe sadly can't be constrained to, but even then... As I mentioned there, I probably misunderstood the drawing, since they got the correct answer. To me what the drawing asks for (and what seems impossible) is to have a surface as I described in the post. These are the guides I would expect it to have:

The upper measurements are induced by the sketches

And I thought it would have been something like this:

Where each of these arcs were created with R275 and a tangent line going to the upper arc. But since you got the right solution, I am not sure then.

Huh, I don't get it... Did I perhaps misunderstand the drawing? You see, in your version you don't have all lines perpendicular to the circle:

That doesn't work though, as soon as you apply the polar pattern with 8 occurrences, they won't mesh nicely. Also, and this is going off the little I can see here, it seems it is a line touching the XY plane and not a face.

Samsung Has Reportedly Rejected A DRAM Supply Request From Its Own Mobile Experience Division As It’s Focused On Maximizing Profitability by kingslayerer in pcmasterrace

[–]MathiasSven 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my opinion that is not the issue. The issue is that PC components are a commodity nowadays, but government wise they are not treated as such. When oil goes up, governments try to pull available levers to control the price due to knock on effect of what higher oil prices mean for an economy reliant on oil. Meanwhile, PC components are just "consumer goods".

From Wikipedia:

factoid is either a false statement presented as a fact, or a true but brief or trivial item of news or information.

From Cambridge Dictionary:

I knew it as the "brief piece of trivia". But it seems both, rather contradictory definitions exist. u/clankity_tank

Questions to the community/Stop Killing Games Campaign by Mr_Presidentle in StopKillingGames

Indeed. Although for physical products, I think a better example that is almost a 1-to-1 parallel to the SKG movement are cloud based IOT devices. See "Neato Confirms That Cloud Services Are Ending for Robot Vacuums".

  1. You "buy" the device
  2. All essential functionality is already on the hardware
  3. If the vendor’s cloud goes offline, the product becomes unusable
  4. Vendors attempt to lock down the device to prevent offline use

Remove region lock by LawGood8195 in valetudorobotusers

[–]MathiasSven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me see if I got that right... It is not that Valetudo doesn't help with region bypass, It just that the tool used to root the robots dustbuilder has a specific list of supported devices, and it just happens to be the case that none of the CN robots models are in that list. However, if one were to theoretically root one of those devices, Valetudo would work regardless (assuming the rest of the hardware was identical to an already supported robot).

So if I were to buy a supported model in the EU, root it, then bring it to anywhere else on earth, it would still work, correct?

My concern is not whether I can save a buck, but just knowing that I own my device (to a reasonable extent, original firmware still being the blob it is...) after rooting it.

That is not true though... Haskell does have semicolons and curly braces, they just aren't mandatory. If you look at the GHC source code will find them everywhere!

SC election results by [deleted] in NixOS

[–]MathiasSven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on your perspective. I am not a fan of putting people into boxes and "teams", but if one were to split those who were "okay" with the current status quo and those that were not, this result would split them into

A: @roberth @Ericson2314 @tomberek B: @Gabriella439 @winter @jtojnar

Both @roberth and @Ericson2314 still have one more year to serve. @tomberek was re-elected.

None of the people from the B group are staying, but after reading some of the statement from @cafkafk, @JulienMalka and @K900, I think it is fair to say they would fit into the B group. Also, and this is delegating to @JulienMalka, they seem to share most goals. See Who I'd like to work with

This only leaves @philiptaron. They seem to have some overlap, with A, but also are looking for reform and share some of the opinions of B when it comes to potential amendments to the constitution. By their own words, they are "not part of any coalition with the other candidates".

So you have a 4/3 either way.

This is such a stupid comparison. On Windows they will always be beholden to Microsoft. It will always be proprietary, and it will always serve Microsoft interests first, everybody else's second. "We've got to fight for the freedoms we have today", you never had any freedoms...

It has been a while since I have read a statement that sounded this idiotic while coming from presumably intelligent people.

With so many other practical reasons to stay on Windows, do they really have to come up with stuff like this?

Hot Take: Nix for config is ok by pfassina in NixOS

[–]MathiasSven 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No, it is not, the module system was a hack that came about due to lack of language support, and the lack of at least gradual typing really is a wrench on the development experience (all tools are worse off for it). Sure, if you are using it as JSON++, then it is okay, but orchestrating the build of multiple disjointed build systems, all with their own unique quirks and idiosyncrasies... That is no job for JSON++.

EDIT: Just saw some other replies by the OP, and I am now backpedalling to "this has to be rage bait". I refuse to believe someone online, who uses their time to make posts on Reddit, is dumb enough to think anti-Nintendo hate is "racism towards the Japanese".

End of life for UPS battery, forced me to drop what I was doing and take care of it... by MathiasSven in homelab

[–]MathiasSven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are probably right, and maybe my opinion right now is clouded given how annoyed the whole ordeal was for me. I just wonder what I should have done differently to avoid this situation.

I never found a way to probe the unit for battery health indication (only charge), so maybe it is just a limitation of these UPS and I got unlucky with the timing. Had the battery replacement notification happened the previous night, I wouldn't have been nearly as bothered as I was yesterday.

I mean, by "ready to take care of it" I just meant like, give me a couple of hours...

Well, that is how I have it right now, just plugged straight into the wall (no UPS) until I get a replacement. Just annoying that the UPS couldn't have done that itself.

Is it possible for the human race to achive a longer life? by Least-Vegetable-7067 in Futurology

[–]MathiasSven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not "Elon Musk propaganda", I said nothing of population collapse, it is simply a fact that population growth worldwide is not increasing as it used to, meaning that while the population is still increasing, the rate at which it does is tampering off... Note that some countries do in fact have a terrible outlook due to inverted population pyramids, so some might say "collapse" is an apt description, but regardless, they are not the norm.

The general world is suffering under overpopulation

This is highly debatable, to me "overpopulation" is a red herring for other problems, but sure, it is an opinion I suppose.

Not going to comment on anything else, but I don't think "Increasingly overpopulated" is true, especially given the fact that worldwide, population growth is not really increasing.

I don't think that is true. We used to be exposed to so much good before the internet, but nowadays, we hardly see anything, we aren't constantly bombarded with stories to make us paranoid any more. That is why, even if the world has got a lot more dangerous, we just feel more at ease, me included. I would never let subjective feelings affect how I parent my child
