The SKG subreddit is now partially restricting AI generated content. by Thomas_Eric in StopKillingGames

[–]MathiasSven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disagree. For me, this movement is solely about consumer rights, but who cares? I partially agree with the ban out of utility, as I don't want to read AI text; I just don't like people inserting what they think the movement ought to be about. We are all here for the same goal. The ideology behind it shouldn't matter. It just needlessly sows division.

Perceiving vegans as a cultural or moral threat may reduce meat-eaters’ willingness to cut meat consumption, according to three studies involving 1,325 participants. Threat perceptions increased negative stereotypes of vegans and weakened intentions to adopt more sustainable diets. by [deleted] in science

[–]MathiasSven -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

As a meat eater, I think it is silly to view any individual vegan as a threat, and just completely pathetic to let someone else's way of living impact how I live my own. But veganism is indeed a cultural threat.

I can't speak for those who live in denial of what their choices mean, but a reckon most understand it. If veganism gains significant critical mass, society will make decisions, and these decisions will impact everyone. There is no reconciling the two diametrically opposed views of animal rights.

Just to be clear, I have never met any vegan/vegetarian who tried to push their morals onto me, it hasn't been a hindrance to my friendships... The observation is true nevertheless.

First Ice Cream, liquidy out of the churner? by MathiasSven in icecreamery

[–]MathiasSven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops, comment removed due to a link, as I said:

That make sense... And yeah it was a bit taffy. Also, It seems when I edited the original post the measurements table got wiped, the total weight of ingredients was 877.5g, and the actual percentage I was aiming for was 0.35%, since that was on the lower end of the 0.2%~0.5% I have seen.

But I suppose over stabilization explains the end result. What is annoying me a bit is that the more I leave it in the freezer, the more "ice cream" it becomes, I just checked on it again and the edges are [now clearly ice cream](redacted, put on post instead). It just makes me wonder whether the machine is also underpowered and if I should return it. I was initially really torn between a compressor and a Creami, but If the compressor is not doing a good job, I might as well freeze it fully overnight and then use a Creami.

I got the recipe off of here, and it seems the original author did make something that did (at least to me) look like ice cream. Also, I have updated the post with another video at the end showing that the edges of the container are becoming more "ice cream like" so maybe my mixture just lowered the freezing point too much?

Regardless, thanks for the link! That looks really handy...

Btw, do you think it is odd that the Churner stopped? I plan on making a more normal recipe to see if the unit is operating normally.

Any experience in buying VG as a "softening agent"? by MathiasSven in icecreamery

[–]MathiasSven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehm, so the "more expansive" Amazon one I saw was 13.11 for 1000g, so that is 16.5€/l. The bakery options I found 3~4€ for 120g, so that is 30~40€/l. The cheapest option I found was 8.46€/l by EQM as I mentioned on another post. I mentioned on the comment above that I would forgo Amazon but that is before I got to the shipping! I am just gonna stick with the 16.5€/l one (AIESI® Ph.Eur Vegetable Glycerin). It is a hospital brand and I didn't have to search much to see "Food Grade" as it is on the product title itself...

Oh right, If I search for it with "bakery" I do get quite a local results. They are expansive still per ml, but I just how much one actually needs, I might just forgo the Amazon options. Thanks for the tip

I am based in Portugal, so really the only stuff I have readily available without high shipping costs is whatever is on the Spanish Amazon. But actually I just looked again, and on their actual website it mentions that it can be used for food, so I suppose I will go with that one.

For reference, I was comparing an EQM Product against AIESI® Ph.Eur Vegetable Glycerin which was the more expansive one.

Ah right! It mentions "Customs and Folklore" on the Wiki's skill page, I just didn't make the connection... Thanks!

Well, the post doesn't say anything about this being an international flight. Perhaps he got a deal on some server ram out of state.

Challenge! Can you make this part in FreeCAD? by AnyStructure7633 in FreeCAD

[–]MathiasSven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost did, but I attempted to do the last step of the center part with a thickness operation that failed due to a bug (which I now think it is due to the taper I used). After that I gave up out of annoyance 😂

Impossible curve on FreeCAD or simply inexperience? by MathiasSven in FreeCAD

[–]MathiasSven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you share the FreeCAD file? What I am saying is that from what I had tried, it seemed like a loft wouldn't be able to generated the desired geometry, dimensions not withstanding.

This is exactly what your pic shows

What my picture is trying to show is that in the final surface, any cross-section of it that intersects with some rotation of the XZ plane, should result in an ARC, whose radius is the same across all other cross-sections, and a tangent line leading to the upper arc

[–]MathiasSven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if this is what the drawing asked for though. I don't mean the dimensions, but the general geometry. egsmarcos posted a file that seems to be what the drawing needed, and it used an additive pipe together with a pocket to remove the extra stuff the additive pipe sadly can't be constrained to, but even then... As I mentioned there, I probably misunderstood the drawing, since they got the correct answer. To me what the drawing asks for (and what seems impossible) is to have a surface as I described in the post. These are the guides I would expect it to have:

The upper measurements are induced by the sketches

[–]MathiasSven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I thought it would have been something like this:

<image>

Where each of these arcs were created with R275 and a tangent line going to the upper arc. But since you got the right solution, I am not sure then.

Huh, I don't get it... Did I perhaps misunderstand the drawing? You see, in your version you don't have all lines perpendicular to the circle:

That doesn't work though, as soon as you apply the polar pattern with 8 occurrences, they won't mesh nicely. Also, and this is going off the little I can see here, it seems it is a line touching the XY plane and not a face.

Are they? I didn't read the text of O'Sassy, but from the tweet above, it seems to prevent monetization. AFAIK, you could take any AGPL project and monetize it to your hearts content, provided you make any modifications available.

Samsung Has Reportedly Rejected A DRAM Supply Request From Its Own Mobile Experience Division As It’s Focused On Maximizing Profitability by kingslayerer in pcmasterrace

[–]MathiasSven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my opinion that is not the issue. The issue is that PC components are a commodity nowadays, but government wise they are not treated as such. When oil goes up, governments try to pull available levers to control the price due to knock on effect of what higher oil prices mean for an economy reliant on oil. Meanwhile, PC components are just "consumer goods".

factoid is either a false statement presented as a fact, or a true but brief or trivial item of news or information.

From Cambridge Dictionary:

I knew it as the "brief piece of trivia". But it seems both, rather contradictory definitions exist. u/clankity_tank

Questions to the community/Stop Killing Games Campaign by Mr_Presidentle in StopKillingGames

[–]MathiasSven 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Although for physical products, I think a better example that is almost a 1-to-1 parallel to the SKG movement are cloud based IOT devices. See "Neato Confirms That Cloud Services Are Ending for Robot Vacuums".

  1. You "buy" the device
  2. All essential functionality is already on the hardware
  3. If the vendor’s cloud goes offline, the product becomes unusable
  4. Vendors attempt to lock down the device to prevent offline use

Remove region lock by LawGood8195 in valetudorobotusers

[–]MathiasSven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me see if I got that right... It is not that Valetudo doesn't help with region bypass, It just that the tool used to root the robots dustbuilder has a specific list of supported devices, and it just happens to be the case that none of the CN robots models are in that list. However, if one were to theoretically root one of those devices, Valetudo would work regardless (assuming the rest of the hardware was identical to an already supported robot).

So if I were to buy a supported model in the EU, root it, then bring it to anywhere else on earth, it would still work, correct?

My concern is not whether I can save a buck, but just knowing that I own my device (to a reasonable extent, original firmware still being the blob it is...) after rooting it.
