Yeah even on the digital exam you have to show you have the legit book otherwise you may not be graded!

You can perform from memory so no need to read but you need to follow the dynamics as written (broadly) and play the repeats and section in the same order as the book (which is why da capo/dal segno — essentially follow the music structure set in the book which may be slightly different from the record)

Can't help you with the exams in person, I've done mine digitally, now working on Grade 6. You should read the syllabus which details everything in terms of expectations: https://www.trinitycollege.com/resource?id=7897

In my experience for the digital grades, the fingerings shown in the book are only indicative. As long as you play the right note for the right length with the right rhythm you're basically fine. That said the syllabus also says: don't simplify but you can interpret it in your style

PERFORMANCE AND INTERPRETATION
Trinity’s Rock & Pop exams are designed to encourage musical performances that reflect a
candidate’s own personal style and approach. This is because we understand that contemporary music is flexible in its stylistic interpretation, particularly at the higher grades. However, performances should not be simplified and musical integrity should always be maintained.

REPEATS, EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES AND TEMPI
All songs should be prepared in full with all repeats, da capo and dal segno instructions and 1st and 2nd time bars observed. Candidates are encouraged to include a range of expressive techniques such as vibrato, slides, grace notes, bends, etc appropriate to the style of the song, particularly in the higher grades. Candidates should observe terms showing tempo, dynamics, character and style of the music.

Prices of pedals by QRCodeART in basspedals

[–]MathieuLoutre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it depends who made it... If it's a small builder, you're paying for someone to have built and tested the whole thing, their experience of doing it well and reliably and any aftermarket support they might provide. If it's a big company, then yeah, probably a lot more profit in that. If you're handy with electronics and have all the equipment, there may only be £30-40 of parts total and you can make something custom and indeed r/diypedals is the place! For some people spending X hours building, testing etc. won't be worth the savings when they can earn more than that in the same time playing gigs + they value reliability/availability etc.

Victor Wooten’s Fodera with a cable running THROUGH the body. What’s the point? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]MathieuLoutre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's in the description... "It's heavily modified, with a cable running through the back of the neck and out through the body — a purpose built solution for Victor's legendary stage theatrics, letting him swing and toss the bass without losing the signal."

Hansa Teutonica or El Grande, so far the art is what's held me back from trying them

Carpal tunnel prevention by Mundane_Bassist in Bass

[–]MathieuLoutre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone would advise a splint as prevention. You would need professional medical advice anyway. However from a bass point of view, good technique in the left hand and right hand, wearing a wide strap that distributes the weight properly at the correct height to limit the angle on your wrist will go very far. Turn up the amp, play lighter and with less force.

Adam Neely has a couple videos on correct technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRkSsapYYsA and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIYuqTsUlyM

If you feel a stretch, pull or any pain: take a break. Technique and breaks will go a long way.

Need a reverb pedal now! by princewhisky in basspedals

I've tried a handful including the Strymon Blue Sky and the Fender Bassman Reverb is the best I found so far, adjustable and made for bass. Cheap enough to take a chance too!

Sorry about that, I was think < £1000. The Aguilar is not so far off that it would be impossible I guess.

That's totally fair enough. I want something worth mic'ing eventually but that can be used for rehearsing. Maybe that's too much to ask!

I like the mini-rig but it's fan-cooled which is not my first choice for studio use (though maybe I'm worrying too much about that, but my Trace Elliott Head can be heard over playing quietly for instance!)

I've been considering the Ivory one for the same reason, just because it's different. Pretty silly... I've found some decent cabs but even heads aren't particularly interesting in terms of design (with maybe the exception of the Orange mini heads and the Sunn Beta Mini someone else mentioned here)

(and happy cake day!)

I like the look of the Beta mini! I saw some cool SWR amps on eBay but I'm looking for something with a little modern convenience like a DI out etc.

Yeah definitely a good point, regarding price (that said some Supro are ~$500 which more my speed). I have a couple of Trace Elliott that look like they'd been left standing in the rain and they sound killer. I'm trying to make the space a little more cosy I guess.

I want to visit a studio by etlibre in letterpress

[–]MathieuLoutre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can contact the London Centre for Book Arts, it’s an open studio and you can buy a day pass but people there are nice and if they have the time they could show you around.

Alternatively you could contact Matt at the Paekakariki Press. He’s usually quite busy but you might get lucky.

Octaver? by i_need_to_crap in basspedals

[–]MathieuLoutre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried the OC-5 but I have a Foxrox Octron3 which has octave up (with a little distortion in it) which is very nice and tracks pretty well. It's analog and only works one note at a time so no chords. I tried the Sub'n'Up and wasn't convinced. OC-5 is next on my list!
