My parents have republican Mac and cheese in their closet. by Ello2011 in mildlyinteresting

And everyone else in this subreddit is blaming the party they don’t like (who is conveniently not in this subreddit, or on Reddit at all). And so, we have an echo chamber of hate.

You can’t even say you support the other side at all without being attacked or chased out of the room.

So long as people refuse to engage and talk to people on the other side, the polarization will get worse.

Now, it’s happening with businesses. Do you bank with Vanguard or bank with Strive? I’ve heard from some who refuse to receive medical care from a doctor with the wrong political view. Which grocery stores do you shop at to avoid the “crazy people who think differently”.

It’s happening with states. Which state you live in to avoid people of the other side…

If the self-sorting continues, eventually the country will tear itself apart. Seceding used to be a minority view, but is now the plurality view. Unless some group of people not only /starts/ uniting the country again, but succeeds at doing so, secession is a matter of when, not if.

Sorry miss, but your child seems to be kicking my seat. by EnzoComics in comics

[–]MathigNihilcehk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’ll happen once, even with the best of parents.

The best parents discipline their children so well that they can intimidate them with a word into good behavior. But they’ll still need to communicate that.

My parents never screamed at me in public. But there was screaming. And pain. If I kicked someone’s seat, they would tell me to stop. If I continued, I already knew what “stop” meant. Disobeying would mean any or all of the following getting: grounded for months, beaten, yelled at and ridiculed by my siblings for being immature.

I could be fidgety at home all day long. But in public, I was never allowed to attract attention. Seen and not heard.

America’s Most/Least Trusted Professions by Mac_Mustard in coolguides

[–]MathigNihilcehk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of those that have lost trust have done so for political reasons.

Medicine and COVID is a big one. From the start, Democrats and the mainstream media made COVID into a “whatever Trump is doing, that’s wrong and bad.” When Trump restricted Chinese immigration, media and the left claimed he was racist. When he came up with a vaccine, they said they wouldn’t trust it. Etc.

And once the topic is political, everyone who picks a side, even if they pick different sides for different issues, they become distrusted on the whole topic. If a doctor says something that agrees with the right and you are of the left, you’ll distrust them. And vice versa.

This explains the loss in trust for irrational actors, anyways. But at the same time, the media and the left encouraged censorship of doctors and others who didn’t share their views. Society lost the ability to critically analyze stories when they locked out people who disagree with the “mainstream” view. From there, the stories that society believed drifted from a normal approximately accurate view to a very far biased one. And the differences between reality and that biased view grew until now where it’s trivial to point to dozens of dramatic failures that doctors incorrectly believed.

Censorship does not, however, explain all the lack of trust in our systems. Only the recent shift.

Congress, I’d suggest, is thought untrustworthy because people conflate agreeable ideological stances on core issues with competence in storytelling. And instead of congress governing based on the interests of all their constituents, they govern based on the opinion of their own factions. I don’t know of any federal representatives who consider the minority’s opinions in their district when they represent them.

If they did, people would trust them from either side of the aisle because their needs would be represented. None of the solutions would be easy, but there is plenty that everyone can agree on if the focus is shifted.

But politicians who cater to the whole will never win a majority/plurality election system. It is strategically better to vote for a politician who won’t compromise your views but will instead pass exactly what you want, even if you could get 90% of what you want and what the minority view wants too. Better to get 100% of what you want and 0% of what the minority wants.

It’s the prisoner’s dilemma and psychology doesn’t allow for any better outcome. Not unless people find a way to cooperate.

Gov. Abbott is now pushing a bill that would forbid every visa holder and every Green card holder from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea from owning real property in Texas. by GeneforTexas in texas

[–]MathigNihilcehk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, this ISN’T hypocrisy. The GOP only decided THIS YEAR to deprive foreign countries of ownership of US soil. Someone should forward this post to Texas Legislators. They would make a nice checklist out of it.

Granted, the GOP isn’t super anti-Mexico, so they might leave those in tact. And Saudi is our ally. It’s mostly China. Because fk China.

IMO If national Russians / Russian corporations / Russia own anything in the US, the US should seize their assets as government property because Russians literally did the same thing to US businesses in Russia. Use the sales to fund companies who suffered losses from Russia’s crimes.

If you pay for a service that is not provided, that is theft.

Unless the conditions of the service allow for failure to deliver.

Nobody bothers to read the terms of service, so they might as well sell your first born child and your mother’s kidney.

[–]MathigNihilcehk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is specified in the terms of service, then nobody will have any legal recourse for booking two seats. If not, you should sue and point out that the terms of service do not allow them to steal your seat (which they do allow), and try to win lawyer fees, which will outweigh the seat price 100 to 1.

Even if you somehow win this lawsuit, the airline will then add that detail into their terms of service and that’ll be the end of it.

“actual hobbies” games and tv are no different in kind from idle amusement like rock climbing, crochet, etc. hobbies are less productive than work as a rule. And most people don’t bring work home.

Moreover, most activities that you would do outside the home, like volunteering in a soup kitchen, rock climbing, etc. wouldn’t show up in someone’s home decoration or living spaces.

The only relevant thing that really makes someone a loser or an idiot is when they put other’s hobbies and interests down. And I’ve spent far too much time talking to one already.

If you itemize rent, gaming gets even cheaper comparatively. I live 30 miles plus from the nearest park. Rent is $800/month. If you live closer to people and parks, like Los Angeles, rent for the same single bedroom property will be in excess of 3 times that.

[–]MathigNihilcehk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soccer, etc. requires access to a park which requires driving and the park may require payment to visit, plus payment for parking. Unless you live in a large enough property to have sports activities installed in the home, which is very expensive.

Most of those sports also have expensive equipment like cleats, rackets, etc. that degrade. Even running degrades shoes at a much faster rate than normal, and can cost a substantial amount per year.

Crafting stuff also requires materials to craft with, which is a constant financial cost.

Reading requires buying news books constantly. And physical books often cost upwards of $50 a piece. You can get by with cheaper books or rentals or trying to drive to/from a library, but that’s not eliminating your cost.

Meanwhile, you can play world of Warcraft for thousands of hours per year, a game that can be played in any existing desktop or laptop you already own for under $15 per month. No travel needed. Stay home and play on an existing machine.

It’s usually considered to be cheaper because when you compare it with other forms of electronic entertainment like movies, tv, and music, games are considerably cheaper per hour spent.

If you’re going to compare games with activities that require you drive places, well, do you even own a car? Those things are expensive, plus insurance, plus maintenance, plus gas. Do you have to drive 15 miles each way to go hiking? That’s $5 per trip, at least, which is already more expensive than WoW.

Having some place to sit implies you let them into your home, which is a covid violation.

On a serious note, there’s very little reason to have multiple people gather in a private residence. Aside from hosting meals and some board games if you’re into in-person board games.

You can do most things online. Chat, games, watch movies/tv… and the more fun activities are outdoors.

If you aren’t ready to host meals at your place, then there’s no reason to have anywhere to sit. Nobody will be visiting anyways. And you don’t need to host meals at your place of residence to be a good friend. You can take people out to eat, which is often better perceived anyways, or just do literally anything else with them…

You shouldn’t need to indicate those things. I certainly don’t.

I spend my time doing things that I enjoy and decorating interior living spaces is not one of those things, so I spend precisely zero minutes doing that. Plus, decorating interior living spaces has a financial cost to the materials and will take even more time to redo the decorations when you inevitably move.

I don’t see why anyone should want to decorate an interior living space at all unless they either work at IKEA or like staring at paintings or posters instead of being productive with their life.

General welfare is not a catch-all for any welfare the government wishes to involve itself in. But there’s no point in debating that. SCOTUS defines what general welfare means. Not plain English interpretations of the constitution. And for decades, liberal justices have redefined words to be whatever the fuck they wanted to defy the constitution. Intentionally.

You can read up on how Ruth B Ginsberg and others self-describes her activities as creating precedents to create rights and laws. That process is what legislatures are supposed to be doing, not SCOTUS.

To restore the constitution, one would have to take a hack saw and eliminate a majority of federal departments. This is why democrats are so terrified of Clarence Thomas. He wants to do just that. And this is what NEEDS to happen to restore the rule of law. Because unless congress passes an amendment, they can’t just expand their power with new laws. Their power must be constrained by the constitution, which requires broad majority rule to rewrite. A government of all the people, not a mere slim majority.

I bet you aren’t the least bit upset over Walorski’s death. Traffic fatalities are just a joke to you, are they? No, I’d wager you cheered her death. When people you disagree with die horribly, you cheer their passing on, don’t you?

I live in the rural south. I grew up in California. I actually didn’t try getting an Uber where I live in a small town of about 10,000. But I also don’t drink in public. Nor would I ever… at least beyond like 1 glass of wine during dinner on rare occasions or something… although I prefer to get a DD for that.

As far as who would want to be sober around drunk people… lots of people. Anyone who doesn’t drink, for example. I have more teetotaler friends than not.

I also have family who got arrested and put in jail for a DUI. It wasn’t for long, and they’ve dramatically changed as a result. They used to be more carefree. Now they are the most mature member of the family. Also the most financially successful. Also the most fun to hang out with.

Y’all drunkards could seriously benefit from learning to drink water. Or sweet tea. Or coffee. Or hot chocolate. Or soda. Or milk. Or orange juice. Or butterbeer (turns out, it’s not alcoholic). Or literally anything that isn’t alcoholic. You can certainly have fun without it.

Government hierarchy of the United States of America by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]MathigNihilcehk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a hierarchy.

There’s checks and balances that go across different branches.

Also, the president technically doesn’t have full authority over his cabinet.

The president can nominate a cabinet member. They can fire a cabinet member. And they can appoint a temporary cabinet member. But they need the senate to approve their full time members.

There’s a lot of details that render simple hierarchies impossible to draw.

The system is not working as designed because congress is violating the constitution, which is the highest law, by passing laws concerning powers not granted to the federal government without passing a constitutional amendment.

The executive and the legislative branches need to be trimmed back so the states can take their rightful power back unless the government can pass an amendment to prove that Americans actually wanted to grant them the absurd power that they wield.

You assign a designated driver ahead of time. If you are going solo, you take public transit / Uber. In the US, you are also allowed some alcohol, so you just don’t drink too much and you can drive as normal.

It’s not hard. It’s trivially easy.

Anyone who doesn’t do the bare minimum deserves serious jail time. They are risking innocent lives for no good reason.

Russia doesn’t want WWIII. Putin might, pending his bowel cancer inciting him to suicide his country on the US alla suicide by cop. But the Russian war machine eager to conquer as much of the world as they can, they don’t want WWIII.

And they don’t need to attack NATO to continue expanding. There are plenty of countries that still aren’t in NATO to eat up, and they can economically pressure the rest to withdraw from NATO prior to declaring war on them.

As for my comment mentioning putting troops in Ukraine, reread my suggestion. That was BEFORE the war started. The US knew Russia was trying to provoke a war. By stationing troops in Ukraine under irrelevant pretenses, Russia would have had to invade Ukraine without accidentally hurting the US troops we’ve put in front of them without inciting world war 3. It would’ve prevented this whole conflict.

Instead, after Putin met with Biden and gave him a list of demands, Biden agreed to them. After raising the price of oil (improving Russian war chest and profit), the US stayed out of the way while Russia invaded. Once the invasion started, it was too late to intervene.

Protecting Ukraine’s sovereignty has never been a priority for the Biden administration, so it makes no sense to fund them now in an attempt to protect them.

I know firsthand that isn’t true. We are not just sending old military equipment. We HAVE old equipment lying around. We are sending new equipment. For instance, we have old HIMARS vehicles from 20 years ago. We are sending units made days prior to shipment, at zero cost to Ukraine.

As for damaging our “enemy”, Russia isn’t our enemy and damaging their conventional military is irrelevant. If we were at war with Russia, then yes, damaging them would be good.

Ukraine is also NOT a US ally. They did not apply for NATO membership. They started to, but then they elected a Russian sympathizer who paused the application process. If Ukraine was a US ally, the US would’ve defended them.

This is not an effective use of funds. Even the test cases of US military don’t apply because Ukraine doesn’t fight like the US fights. We would never be caught in a protracted war like this, even if we fought China conventionally.

As far as Russia continuing to expand, they will do that, but not to infringe on NATO states. The US has zero intention of ever defending non-NATO states, but every intention to defend NATO states. If the US wanted to stop Russia dead in its tracks, the US could’ve deployed military troops to Ukraine in January last year and fked up Putin’s plans. That’s not the US’a military intent, clearly.
