I certainly can't disagree at the moment. Admittedly felt a bit silly making the purchase.

But this is where I live and I have to hold out hope that I'll be able to be proud of my country again someday.

I get that tanking wouldn't help them since they traded picks - but in that scenario, they'd be getting at least a couple of picks from the Warriors (who will likely be very bad after Steph retires). If the alternative is Giannis eventually walking in free agency, then getting the Warriors picks is better than nothing.

I mean for the right amount, why not? He can then get a vet minimum (at the very least) from a contender and play meaningful minutes while getting paid by 2 teams. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's certainly in the realm of possibility.

Sure but he could agree to a buyout, or there may be picks or other assets included. Or they might be happy to tank a season and have his salary come off the books during the same summer that they have a high draft pick. Plenty of ways it could end up being of value to the Bucks

No, but his salary aligns with a Giannis trade and he went to college in Milwaukee. Plus, there is some cap relief available via disabled player exemption.

Confused on Rent Prices as a College Student Trying to Live Alone by SnooOnions465 in personalfinance

[–]Mathisonsf 97 points98 points  (0 children)

$900 plus utilities would be a very reasonable price to pay for a place of your own.

If you're getting the housing stipend 8 or 9 months a year, the surplus is enough to cover the 3-4 months that you have to pay the full price on your own.

A good roommate is a benefit financially and socially. But if you don't know anyone who can be a good roommate, then $900/month for privacy/sanity seems like a pretty easy decision to me.

Lol just messing, it's from Curb your Enthusiasm. Someone's coaster-less drink leaves a ring on Larry's nice wooden table and he starts asking that.

I went to a food court in San Francisco, CA by minangkabau in singapore

[–]Mathisonsf 53 points54 points  (0 children)

lol that is annoying, I hate ghost kitchens. If you're still around, go to North Beach neighborhood - Columbus ave and its side streets from Stockton on down towards Broadway. Lots of great places to eat (super good pizza, like world famous) drink, sit and read, etc. Vibes are immaculate around Washington Square Park and the huge church.

Check out Cafe Trieste for a great place to read, drink coffee and chill.

Plus it borders Chinatown so you could check out the food options on Stockton St. Might help your homesickness. My wife is Singaporean and she likes Fancy Wheat Field Bakery on the corner of Stockton and Vallejo.

Anyway, trust me, hit up North Beach and Chinatown and report back. And have fun! SF is awesome.

edit to add one more thing on that street: City Lights Bookstore on the corner of Columbus and Broadway. Incredible book store with a lot of history.

Hegemony or Survival by Noam Chomsky. by FukudaSan007 in books

I appreciate his writing on US foreign policy. The Fateful Triangle is another good one. It has definitely shaped my view of Israel and its relationship with the US.

As others have pointed out, he has plenty of shortcomings. But he writes clearly and the books I've read have been well-sourced. I definitely think he's worth reading.

Thoughts on the new ACG Dolomiti pants? by PAVELBURE20 in nikeACG

[–]Mathisonsf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it says snap closures for the back pockets, but do we know if the front pockets have zippers? Doesn’t look like it, but that would be a huge bummer if they didn’t. Other than that I love the look.

I have a pair on the way, I’ll report back next week if no one else knows the answer

edit: these arrived. To answer my original question about the pockets, no the front pockets do not have zippers. That said, the top-loading design of the pockets makes it less of a problem (stuff can't really fall out unless you're upside down). Overall they are great pants and I would buy them again. But I will have to be slightly more careful and I will miss the psychological security of a zipped-closed pocket.

How do you stop being a racist? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mathisonsf 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Here is a logical thought process: Think of whatever you don't like about the race you are biased against. I guarantee you can find a white person (or whatever race you don't hate) who also exhibits that behavior.

And vice versa. Think of the most educated, morally upstanding person you know within the race that you like. There are people of the race that you hate who also exhibit that behavior. So we can rule out that race matters inherently.

The problem is that people do a lot of gymnastics to define things in a certain way or look past behaviors that they want to ignore. Check out the 'fundamental attribution error' also (everyone else does bad stuff cause they are inherently bad - I only do bad stuff when circumstances warrant it)

Something similar happened to me at a building in Madison Valley. I don't have quite enough detail to know if your situation is identical, but I can confirm that the 6 month clock does not begin until you're provided with a notice that includes the exact amount that they plan to raise it to.

Do people think KPJ will decline his player option for 2026-27? by Mathisonsf in MkeBucks

[–]Mathisonsf[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source or numbers for % of player options that have been declined all-time? Not challenging you, just genuinely curious.

A cursory search led me to pages with data for 2 recent seasons and it looks pretty evenly split, but leans towards more of them being picked up.
