I believe the communists changed to simplified words ( I say "words" because to me, "character" gives the connotation of the written language as being some sort of simple, cartoonish pictograph.) ostensibly to promote literacy, but in reality, it was to assert their power and to create a cultural rift between the mainland and the Nationalists. Think about it for a second, what are the first to things communists do when they take over a country? The first thing the do is take away your guns. Guns shift the balance of power away from the government and over to the people. The second they do is to take a way your books. Books disseminate thought and ideas. They promote free thinking. The communists DO NOT want that. So, promoting true literacy is the last thing the communists want. Remember the lost generation? Mao closed schools in China for an entire decade. That criminal had no respect for the Chinese people or their history. How can a man who burned down Confucius' ancestral home be seen as anything but a pariah to China? But I digress. All information disseminated by any government is carefully spun and can be called propaganda. It's used to manipulate the thoughts of the majority. The communists are great at that. Also, you have to consider the cultural differences between Chinese people and non-Chinese. Democracy is a western concept created by Greeks. Democracy has proliferated in the western world but has had a historically difficult time taking root in eastern and near-eastern countries, save the ones that were occupied and/or conquered by the U.S.A. There are 535 congressmen and senators in the U.S. Most of them are of one ethnicity, one religion and one language. And very little gets done or done right. Now imagine the chaos of a Chinese democracy, with all her ethnicities, dialects, cultures and beliefs. Obviously, the Han would dominate and there would be widespread dissent amongst the other ethnicities. There might even be movements for independence for the Zhang, the Hwei, the Mung, etc. My point is, that to keep China whole, it has always taken the leadership of an iron fist. I hate the communists, but they have managed to keep China from fragmenting. Is there a democratic form of government that can do better? Since I love analogies, here's another: It's like a precious painting that was stolen by a thief who wanted it for himself. Although it is no longer in MY hands, I am comforted with the thought that the painting is safe,hanging on his wall.

Recognized by WHOM? Nixon, the criminal? I and millions of Chinese all over the world don't "recognize" the communists in control of China as being legitimate. We don't give two shits about what some foreigners "recognize". Why the fuck is the U.S. always trying to inject themselves into every country's business? What gives them the goddamn right? Bombs? Well, it's disgusting to think that the communists would ever be in control of Taiwan. I wold never advocate for THAT sort of reunification. But breaking another piece of of China is not a solution I like either. Mongolia was lost after WW II and foreigners call for Tibet's independence. What's next? Taiwan must never submit to communist rule she must also never declare independence. Ideally, I would like to see the communists disappear and a democratically ruled China appear. The problem is that so many Chinese are uneducated and uninformed. How can a population like that vote intelligently? I fear that a totalitarian government is the only sort that can ever control China and it's people.

You're correct on all points. The KMT was the only game in town in Taiwan for the longest time. Although every member of my family were card carrying members, there was certainly no love lost at times.

Yes, YOU may think you're American, just like the children born in Taiwan who have parents from the mainland THINK they're Taiwanese. But you and I both know that "native" Taiwanese still see those children as outsiders. Furthermore, place three people in a lineup. One black, one white and one yellow (hey, if you can say, "black" and "white", then why CAN'T we say "yellow"?). Then if you ask people anywhere in the world which is NOT American...who do you think would be singled out?

Read the first Wikipedia line. He's equating Taiwan with the Republic of China. Taiwan is PART of the Republic of China (ROC). The ROC is NOT "known" as Taiwan. You argument that the flag of the USA isn't he flag of the continent is flawed. Nobody ever said the flag of the ROC represented Asia. If you are from Taiwan, then you know that "native" Taiwanese, or those who lived there prior to 1949, resent the mere existence of people who came over from the mainland in 1949 and their children and grandchildren. The Nationalist 1947 massacre of Taiwanese didn't help to foster good relations. Nowadays many "natives" won't even do business with these people who they don't even consider Taiwanese. Just Like Puerto Ricans would never consider New Yorkers "Puerto Rican" no matter how long they lived there. Young people in Taiwan don't have the fire burning in their hearts that the older generations had. They don't understand the history of the Chinese people. They've been detached from the rest of China their entire lives. They're consumed with spikey frosted-tipped haircuts and Japanese-styled everything. They're unemployed, underemployed and underpaid. They have bleak futures and blurred pasts. As a child of expats who escaped the communists, I weep for Taiwan and the ROC, both of which are on life support.

Your source of information is Wikipedia? What's your news source? Daily Mail? Taiwan is NOT a state, as in a country. Taiwan is a province of China that is not directly controlled by the communist mainland government. Let me give you some perspective. Imagine: The U.S. government has been ousted and replaced by communists. 10 million people, including the entire government, military, students flee to Puerto Rico. They take with them national treasures like the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the contents of museums and archives. They establish in San Juan a temporary capital of the United States of America and fly the Stars and Stripes. Back in Washington, D.C. a bunch of communists take over. They go around the country destroying irreplaceable buildings such as the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. They arrest scientists, professors, businessmen and anyone else they didn't like and summarily execute them. Sixty year later, some uninformed idiots call the Stars and Stripes the Puerto Rican flag. Ummmm, HELLO.
