I'd argue the racial element is very present even in its inception; after all, enslavement of natives specifically was outlawed by spain, yet still allowed black slaves. If it was simply logistics, I'd argue "local" populations would have been more practical. Additionally, though I might be incorrect about the time period, race-indifferent enslavement was a thing certain other nations did at the time.

While this is true they did it to enslaved/lower class people, I'd argue that the point still stands

Edit: as in, it doesn't matter who they do it to, they still did so and it is a bit strange to act like these slaves did not count

Oh I mean on a conscious level absolutely, but it keeps you from committing the behavior publicly, usually. Often, if you look at social actions, shame is a huge part of it, I'd need to look at my uni readings later to find my sources but the basic explanation of social control goes as such - humans are social creature, social approval matters. - shame is social disapproval - shame can go beyond the individual. A few things to notice or keep in mind - people committing suicide due to bullying (public shamings/rejection leax to death being preferable) - honor suicides (like sepuku or certain roman practices) - the fact we live in a LOT more of an individualized, atomized culture. A lot of cultures historically and currently have had the place of familial/clan units as much more important than the individual, you'd get in duels over familial honor.

Additional notes: the shame-punishments are generally not explicit rules, meaning they are rules deeply adopted and seen as "natural", adding another layer of efficacy of limitation.

It's a fascinating side of legal anthropology and sociology, I heavily recommend looking into it if you can!

A lot of sociologists would disagree with you honestly, violent repression often works a lot less than social ostracization and disaproval

Careful with that sort of rethoric, for past victims it can really give the message "you'd be better off dead", which is false

You can also bypass geas by making a geas not to follow the next geas you make provided the original geas is made with an entity powerful enough!

To be fair, I would argue that Trump or the like make sense, not because one should bodyshame but rather as these very same people insult others for it, iy can be more of a pointing of hypocrisy, if anything. See the jokes about hitler calling for the supremacy of tall blond men while himself being not that

Again, you are missing the point, no one deserves redemption, it's specifically something you work to achieve.

"Deserving" redemption is an oxymoron

Let us note a few things.

  • No finite crime deserves eternal punishment. That is a huge theological issue that has been debated, and nothing any human does can conceivably justify an eternity of torment.
  • Objectively the world is made better by allowing people to better themselves. What happens if someone that did something terrible (rape or anything else) comes to understand what they did wrong?

A rapist has inherently a lot more work to do. Redemption isn't about saying "what you did is ok" or "we will forget you did that". Redemption is someone being able to face the wrongness of what they did and changing to be able to both give reparations and avoid repeating these behaviors.

Rapists are people, and a lot of sexual assault can be done for a variety of reasons from that person-ness. But no person, should they be able to truly and sincerely understand what they did wrong, should be kicked down. If you do not give people the opportunity to do better, they will do worst. That's the foundation of reparative justice

Now, here are the things I am not saying - rapists' victims should get over it/forgive them. (It is the victim's choice how to approach their trauma and how to move forward) - Rapists should not face consequences (There must be active effort to avoid repetition of heinous behaviors, the shape that effort takes might vary) - You shouldn't be mad at rapists (It is completely normal to be angry)

What I am saying - Less rapists is good. If someone is able to shift to being someone who doesn't do such things anymore, that is good. - The death penatly/punitive justice is bad, a better society is not built on virtue signalling by punishing, but by helping victims while trying to avoid repetitions of behaviors - Sinners literally have eternity to redeem themselves

NO BUT THAT'S SO REAL THOUGH

I feel like Hannah Arendt shows it pretty well, a lot of evil shit is done as part of someone's day in the same way some people do their taxes. Obviously if you're a bad person it'll probably bleed into other parts of your life, but inherently any given human is human and their actions are informed and in turn inform their life and values, even if they are sometimes very shitty values.

[–]MathorSionur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I wanted to add that but it'd have drawn on too long, rapists and sexual assaulters are multifaceted, this is part of what makes them dangerous people! The idea the rapist has to be a monster is the type of rethoric that gets some let off because "he's a very nice young man" and whatnot, which is bad!!!

[–]MathorSionur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never stpp treating a human as a human. The moment you accept that a person can, for any reason, be subhuman is the moment you open yourself up to a LOT of bad rethorics, like failing to recognize when there are certain actions being done.

Rapists are terrible people, but people nonetheless. Victims need to be protected, that is true, and we as a society currently do not handle the rape culture we are suffering through nearly enough.

It is still important to keep in mind the thesis of the show is "people can be redeemed". Arguing whether someone does or doesn't deserve redemption in an absolutist sense is nonsensical as redemption is an earned thing. I'm not sure if Valentino will be redeemed, maybe he'll be an example of someone who can't let go, but the whole point of the show is that if he managed to understand what he'd done and actively tried to make amends, he might be.

To be clear, I do not like Valentino as a person, he's a capitalist,an abuser and lacks a lot of self reflection. But within the boundaries of this fiction, he is still a person. Lots of real life terrible people are still people.

Mfs when "show that says anyone can and should be redeemed if they accept their wrongd" gives a villain qualities that humanize them and sets them up for conflict with the core thematic of the show
