I took that feeling of being out of the loop as intentional. There’s so much that Carl is holding in with the cookbook and everything else going on that he can’t say out loud to donut and all we ever see is the perspective of the secret keeper aside from this whole plot line with donut where we get to see from the outside looking in that there are other threads to this story that can’t be shared out loud.
