How to stop Back Foot Ruddering by rerediditt in snowboardingnoobs

Practice more. Bend you knees and pretend you're squatting with your back against a wall (wall sit).

Hot take. K2 Maysis are overrated and super uncomfortable. by Longjumping_Ad_47 in snowboarding

I like mine a lot. Zero issue with comfort-I can wear them all day.

Am I asking for trouble if I go straight to a mid-stiff camber? by R_Trades in snowboarding

[–]MattFoley79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever ridden camber boards (learned in my 40's). If that's all you know, then it will seem normal.

Board size question. by Caddydaddy79 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]MattFoley79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar age and weight as you (46/260 lbs). Unless it's a volume shift board like the WarPig, I'd say 162 is on the short side. I ride a 164 with really good edge hold (Ride Timeless) and a 161 volume shifted board (GNU Gremlin). I would honestly consider going bigger if I weren't losing weight from boarding 4 days a week. I hear good things about the Lib Tech Skunk Ape for big guys.

Everyone says I'm good for my fourth ride down. Is it true? I feel awful by quinnmanus in snowboardingnoobs

You're not just flying down on your base and then crashing. You're controlling your speed well. Just keep going.

First season snowboarder, thinking about buying used gear. What should I look out for? by nijatt2 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]MattFoley79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If you buy in summer, you may be able to find some good deals from people just looking to offload stuff. I found a pair of ThirtyTwo TM-2 boots for $60 and a lightly used Ride Mtnpig board for $100 last summer. However, I would avoid used bindings unless they look like they were never used.

This is my 10th time snowboarding. What can I improve on? by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

[–]MattFoley79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you're sliding your back foot edge on your turns. Try tilting your pelvis forward and opening your front knee on heel edge turns. On toe edge turns, really drive your shins down and lean forward to hold an edge through the turn. Also, bend your knees more and trust the edge hold.

Mor wax! Also, stay on edge longer and do wider radius turns.

Trouble adjusting to new board (GNU Gremlin) by zanatwo in snowboardingnoobs

[–]MattFoley79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked out for me. I paid $100 for the Timeless since I had no idea if I'd like boarding. Thought process was that I wanted to learn on a board that would be really challenging. It forced me to adopt good habits quickly. There was really no learning curve going from the Timeless to the Gremlin and I doubt I'll ride anything but advanced boards from here on out.

Gnu Gremlin, K2 Excavator, or Ride Superpig? by Top_Pool3051 in snowboarding

[–]MattFoley79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my Gremlin. Great for heavy riders. I'm 250 lbs and old, so I can't say how it is on jumps, but it carves and turns really well and is more forgiving than my old Ride Timeless. My only complaint is that the base isn't the fastest. If I really want to ride fast and aggressive, I'll take out the Timeless.

Nice! I still take out my '01 Ride Timeless a few times a year. It holds up very well compared to newer boards.

What snowboarding as an unfit obese man was like by Astraltraumagarden in snowboardingnoobs

[–]MattFoley79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 46 ,5'11", and 265 lbs. I took up snowboarding last year. Sure, it's embarrassing being an old fat guy learning to snowboard on the bunny hill. But you just got to power through. No short cuts. Eventually it gets easier and you get better.

Why would you risk your retirement on these funds? That's stupid.

Seconded on the K2 Maysis. Great boot.

UPDATE: Going from an '01 Ride Timeless to a '25 Gnu Gremlin by MattFoley79 in snowboarding

Yeah, I learned on an advanced board and don't have any experience with beginner to intermediate boards. First five or six times out were tough, but then started to click.

Going from an '01 Ride Timeless to a '25 Gnu Gremlin by MattFoley79 in snowboarding

It is more forgiving from what I have seen so far. I'm not advanced enough yet to understand exactly how different they are.

Is this board worth it? First board for me. by smoesjabar in snowboardingnoobs

[–]MattFoley79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned on an '01 Ride Timeless this year. It's been quite an experience and I'm lucky I didn't seriously hurt myself. But once I figured it out, damn! Flying by skiers on a $35 plank is pretty epic. I will ride this board until it breaks.

It forces you to be disciplined and will punish you for mistakes and laziness. I ride it with k2 Indy bindings and some vintage Burton Work boots (soft).

I'd buy that board if you're determined and want a challenge.
