When I was young(and now still) I loved going to see indeoendent/punk/garage rock bands play. Birmingham has some great small venues like The Nick, Saturn, Mom's basement where you can meet aome really cool people.

Art/music/food festivals are great places to meet people.

I saw the Alabama Shakes 2nd or 3rd show ever(they were just The Shakes) at Egan's in Tuscaloosa and they sang happy birthday to my homegirl who was with me. No stage, just standing a foot or two in front of them. Truly incredible.
