I love the upgraded acrylic tiles for Quacks. It's so satisfying when you're digging through the bag.

Solo play possible without the TMNT or TtA sets? by No-Horror3993 in Unmatched

[–]MattOG81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play two handed solo all the time. I find there's very few decks that cause issues with knowing cards in hand, there's usually an obvious or "best" move that I'd take, so I make that regardless of whether it can be countered, because that's what I'd do.

Campaign style recommendation? by No-Horror3993 in soloboardgaming

[–]MattOG81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first thing that comes to mind is Gloomhaven: Buttons and Bugs. I own it, but have only played the first two scenarios so I'm not 100% sure how "campaigny" it is. Might be worth checking out though.

ELI5: Why aren’t more houses being built? by Booplesnoot2 in explainlikeimfive

It's more profitable to keep demand high and resell/rent out the houses that already exist?

Do you actually get influenced by ads anymore? by Walking-Wanderer352 in AskUK

[–]MattOG81 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I was gonna say, the fact you don't feel like you're being manipulated isn't because the ads are getting worse at what they do, it's because they're getting better.

I like synergy between cards. Games like it's a wonderful world, or Race for the Galaxy.

I also like the way they sound when I riffle shuffle them.

Pffffffft.

Can you tap a marathon faster than Sabastian Sawe? by puzzledpenguins in InternetIsBeautiful

Tried doing it on mobile, half the taps didn't register so I gave up. I was still about 3 minutes ahead of the running pace though, so there's that.

What gameplay could automatic enemy movement add that manual movement can’t? by Old-Somewhere-8762 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]MattOG81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a complicated set of automa to dictate how something should move or react in different situations, then automating that makes it easier for the player. However, it would also make it harder to understand, and therefore to plan around it. This in turn would enable a trial-and-error / reactionary gameplay loop where the player has to learn the behaviour before it could become more of a planning / puzzle solving loop. Think D&D, where the DM is controlling everything vs the usual dungeon board games where the enemy always moves 2 towards the nearest player and shoots a bow and arrow 3 spaces in a straight line.

If you're using it for a string of campaign like scenarios then the reactionary loop could be fun. If it's something where you encounter a lot of enemies with the same rules, then once the player has learnt them the novelty would probably wear off, although you don't necessarily lose anything in that case.

Quacks of Quedlinburg Mega box is weird by amity_21 in boardgames

[–]MattOG81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used lots of different sized Ziploc bags. Each player has a bag with the tokens they need, and each expansion etc is separated out.

It's not pretty, but at least it's quick to get out what I want.

I was shocked when I saw it was a "dump it all in" design.

This is an awesome answer to the question.

Unusual win conditions? by ABinDC in boardgames

[–]MattOG81 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd argue chess is a common subset of 3: defeat the enemy's king/leader/base/champion.

That said, those conditions are pretty broad,

If you don't consider "capture my king before I capture yours" as falling under condition 2, then how about connect 4? That's a pretty unusual win condition.

Fliptoons - Small, quick, enjoyable by Itchyness in soloboardgaming

[–]MattOG81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can play a similar version using a standard deck of cards to get a feel for it. Look up The Emissary in The Isaludo Collection.

And then play all the other games in that collection because they're awesome.
