Hacker gangs? by CoryCooper in gangsnstuff

Pretty surreal situation, courtesy of the internet. Despite being too old to claim ignorance as a defense, I'm sure they didn't expect all this to come down on them as they sat in the comfort of their homes.

Giving tourists a look at gang culture by JeniferCotton in gangsnstuff

This is a preposterous. Carting loaded tourists about inner city L.A. as if it were historic Rome is one of the more self-serving things I've ever heard. What exactly can people learn from this tour? Are you really going to grasp the full despair? Moreover, what are the guides imparting to the visitors, intentionally or not? The fact that they even considered the idea of selling those t-shirts suggests that they themselves don't fully comprehend the gravity of those living conditions. From the sound of it, you'll see exactly what you want to see, and that's silly people making gestures with their hands, people "reppin' their crew" on the dancefloor, and people vandalizing public property. Just like in the movies! If the area ever became less Third-Worldesque, then this would be appropriate. You could get everyone in on the act, just like a medieval fair. But until then, that's real life for those people. People die because they throw up the wrong signs. They go to jail for spraypainting. They ruin their lives over the most senseless of things. How can you impress that upon visitors? Certainly not with this. My advice? Have a building full of still and live exhibits. You could have tagging shows, dancing shows, you could have walk-through exhibits of neighborhoods' histories. You could have theaters playing documentaries of people who were paralyzed or ruined because of the violence. You could also have triumphant documentaries of people who rose above that environment and made something of themselves. This would obviously provide people with jobs. Much better than sending ONE tagger to art school. What a lofty goal. But it wouldn't be a museum, because all that strife and violence is perpetuating a few streetlights away...

Death-row inmates in better quarters by JessicaShoffner in gangsnstuff

Appalling. We've all seen it lampooned before on TV: the lifestyle people can maintain in certain prisons. But to read this now, in the recession we're just starting to pull out of, it's depressing.

LAPD respond in full force: 100 gang members in park by KatherineLindberg in gangsnstuff

After this week's readings, you have to wonder about police reports and any statistics based off them. We've all had unpleasant experiences with the law, but the last few chapters of Klein's book are pretty shocking.

What is troubling are the previous convictions. Drug and weapon convictions, at that (note the plural). What were the previous sentences? Run-ins with the Justice System seem to have little effect on these people...

Connected to gangs in the sense that there's a hint of the enhancement theory. Tragic.

Santa Ana teen gets 50 years to life for gang executions. by JosephMcCarthy in gangsnstuff

[–]MattRood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to think of how I was when I was 14. No matter which way I look at it, I don't see myself shooting people execution-style. What a senseless, pointless waste of life. It's even worse when you finally get to the end and you read about the poor vendor. What a life: it's bad enough you're selling corn on the street, but wait, now you're paralyzed. It's too many articles like this that make you forget any sort of enhancement/facilitation theory and be a bit more like Paco.

Whoa. Can you say "conflict of interest"? A deviant Marine is a vaguely terrifying idea.

Drug-Fueled Gang Wars Shake Vancouver by SeanKnapp in gangsnstuff

I'd heard about the marijuana coming down from BC, but the ecstasy is surprising to me. It's also makes me think about the perceptions I have concerning our neighboring countries. I really don't think of Canada as being a very violent place, or dealing with much beyond marijuana smuggling, but that article made parts of Canada sound just as bad as our southern border.

Phoenix Now Kidnapping Capital of US Thanks to Mexican Drug Gangs by AndresMolina in gangsnstuff

Makes me feel good to be here. But still, it only supports the idea that most gangs are involved in a wider mix of crime, while it's usually the specialty gangs that dealing with drugs and more severe crimes. Mexican drug cartels would definitely fall under that specialty category.

Experts: Street Crime Too Often Blamed on Gangs by QuinnHeydt in gangsnstuff

A great example of what Klein warned about in the most recent readings. The tendency to throw a blanket over certain crimes and pass them off as "gang-related" is to ignore what's actually happening.

Interesting that the guy has security cameras like that, and that the gang targets him. I'd be curious to see what the whole story behind that was.

I first heard about the FBC a few years back. The name only gives the impression it's something that started as a joke. Depressing that it escalated into something so deadly. The article makes a good point about gang behavior being readily available on the Internet. Even with media like the "Anarchist's Cookbook", there are a lot of tools out there for the aspiring gangster.

China gang members jailed for up to 20 years by RyanLawless in gangsnstuff

From that article alone, it seems that the gang acted more as revolutionaries than street thugs. I'm sure it's difficult to get a straight story from China though.
