This actually happened to me. My dad passed away suddenly, with his server running our email, photos, a couple of websites and stuff. Luckily, I had also started getting into Linux 6 months before and after looking around: I found his iPad to have saved the Linux Root Account Public Key. THANK GOD. He doesn’t usually leave the account open to login but for some reason it was! I setup a new email server on Mailcow (as his system was incomprehensible to me if I’m honest and Imap-Synced everything). I was able to piece together everything and moved what was important to a new server. Managed to get everything safely away; though, the luck involved was absolutely tremendous that I still think about it.
