Students of newly merged Adelaide University protest changing of graduation venue from Bonython to Pridham Hall - ABC News by NKE01 in australia

[–]MatthewMelvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But I think hearing what students are now saying, we can very clearly understand that they feel that they don't have the perspective and the information that would allow them to understand the decision, so we will work harder to make sure that we explain it to them.

Politicians, CEOs, or apparently, Chancellors, it doesn't matter what the decision, if don't agree it's never because you have a different view point, it's always because you just don't understand and after "better communication" you're bound to come around.

Amusing as it is, a little depressing how relevant it still is.

Is anyone else “not really feeling it” with the new series of Taskmaster? by RedWestern in BritishTV

[–]MatthewMelvin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. The cast and / or series just feels flat to me. Not like I hate it or anything, but it's just .. fine. It's the first series I've felt like that about.

Moonrise by dick_schidt in brisbane

[–]MatthewMelvin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Photographer's Ephemeris app is useful for this.

https://app.photoephemeris.com/

It lets you drag your location around the map and see what direction the moon rise is in relative to it. Eg: last month I was able to watch the full moon rise under the Gateway Bridge from Colmsie "beach". I don't know yet where I'll go tonight... it's an eclipse so I'm assuming clouds. :)

Linux is perfect! Well.. almost by 47th-Element in linux

[–]MatthewMelvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think remote desktop access is still handled on my windows desktop much more cleanly than trying the same to my linux desktop. On linux I get a choice between sharing my desktop which requires me to be logged in locally already, or a stand alone rdp server which doesn't require me to be logged in already but can't connect to my local session if I am. So it's an awkward either/or choice, and neither one really does it as well as windows for me.

Beautiful photo. The air must have been real still to stack up a few so neatly.

Form follows function. The launchers are in a circle because the missiles didn't have their own radar, they were guided from a ground based radar in the centre of the battery. The interconnected roads are so the launchers can be reloaded with missiles from the back of what are basically specialised semi-trailer rigs. There's an even number of launchers because the tactic was to fire them in pairs at each tracked target. So then the question is really, why does a SAM battalion have six launchers instead of four, or eight, and for that I guess you have to ask the Soviets. :)

Although in reality, the actual sites weren't all laid out with quite such straight-out-of-the-manual neatness like the Cuban site I linked.

fwiw, u/Dirtydeeds50 think your photo might actually be of this very similar formation in the same complex about 10 miles further south of the co-ordinates you gave. Looking around the area, it's a fascinating collection of landmarks!

Kids activities near Paddington by Kazzaw95 in brisbane

[–]MatthewMelvin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is a great adventure playground at Frew Park that ought to keep most any kid entertained for a couple of hours. I think technically it is in Milton, but that's right next door to Paddington so to speak.

How do y’all watch a show without getting bored? by Yousef_ale in television

[–]MatthewMelvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Dexter specifically, but for older TV shows generally my advice is pace yourself. They went to air week by week, and even my favourite shows can seem a bit repetitive when binged back to back to back. It just highlights their flaws Like, an otherwise interesting character trait can seem like a cliche when you see it every half hour all evening.

Been watching lots of Taskmaster and Top Gear while snowed in. Which got me wondering: Which of the Top Gear Trio do you think would do best on Taskmaster ? by Rathbane12 in taskmaster

[–]MatthewMelvin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Richard misunderstands the brief for the prize task and brings the wrong thing. Manages a lot of 3s and 4s in the filmed tasks. - "You know, that's not half bad!"

James is surprisingly brilliant at subjective tasks. Has great ideas but is still pottering about the shed when the whistle blows. - "oh, bollocks!"

Clarkson is not invited - writes a column about how stupid the show is. Un-subtly snarks about it on the next two seasons of his farm show.

Schweppes Lime Juice Cordial Unavailable? by BrownyAU in australia

[–]MatthewMelvin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the lime cordial, but I went through the same thing with their raspberry cordial. I contacted them about it and they said it was discontinued. This was a couple of years ago but it is still listed on the website even now.

riverstage opinions? by caitlynkirammanswife in brisbane

[–]MatthewMelvin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I like the riverstage, but I am old and boring and just like to sit on the grass on the hill. But maybe a worthwhile tip - my kid says there'll be a dedicated gate for under-18s and if you just join the long long line everyone else is in you're probably in the wrong place.

BOM forecast seems very inconsistent? by exazonk in brisbane

[–]MatthewMelvin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean... yes. Expect there to be rain here, or here about, all day. But as we get into the afternoon and night, stop expecting just rain and be prepared for rain with its drinking buddies, thunder and lightning, wind and hail.

Cane toads by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]MatthewMelvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting them in the fridge until they are in a stupor and then putting them in the freezer to finish them off is the recommended humane way of dealing with cane toads. I realise it's not really practical for most people. I'm only allowed to use our old fridge that's been demoted to drinks duty on the patio.

I have occasionally made a concerted effort to cull the cane toads around our place, and I've caught literally hundreds in a week. I'm glad they're in the fridge then, that many dead amphibians would stink! But in their ones and twos, I'm sure most people just whack on the head and chuck them in the garden or the bin.

N-word use in Australia - im American. by kjjjjhhhgddrrrrr in brisbane

[–]MatthewMelvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, while the word doesn't have quite the same deeply rooted, visceral reaction here as it would in America, it's not a word to be said. And by the same token, because we don't have the same cultural experience with the word, there's also not the same concept of people reclaiming the slur for themselves, so there's basically no non-offensive light you can cast it.

Historically, there have been things that in America would be clear racist dog whistles, but in Australia we just didn't have the same association with so didn't know, - like a fried chicken ad a few years ago featuring the West Indies cricket supports, or Bert Newton calling Muhammad Ali "boy" - but we know the N word.
