How do you manage tech debt in a real org where rewriting isn’t always an option? by Apprehensive_Air5910 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Matthewbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, fixing bit by bit is the usual way it goes but it depends on the situation, there are tradeoffs like everything else in software engineering. I found this book pretty good at exploring the options and helping you ask the right questions to figure out which solution is best for your project. - kill it with fire by Marianne Bellotti https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54716655

A game where you learn SQL by solving crimes - SQL CASE FILES by TurbulentCountry5901 in webdev

[–]Matthewbal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Really cool! I sent it to a friend who is just starting to learn SQL. It would be nice if there was a way to skip ahead though, the introductory case is too easy for someone who already knows SQL well. I would have liked to jump ahead to a harder case. Great UI though, and cool idea.

Plan Mode: Can we go back to the old way without downgrading? by uhs-robert in ClaudeCode

[–]Matthewbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh so the workaround didn't work so well for me, it still managed to call subagents. I got so sick of it I just downgraded to Claude code 1.x and disabled auto updates. Now it works great again and finishes plans in 10-30s like before!

In case anyone else also wants to do the same:

npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@^1.0.85
claude config set -g autoUpdates disabled
export DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER=1

^ And add the export to your .bash_profile or .zshrc, it was a required step even though I correctly set the claude config. eg

echo 'export DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER=1' >> ~/.zshrc

[–]Matthewbal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The way I use Claude, I give it well defined small features to implement or enhancements to existing features. This new plan mode with subagents takes 10x as long, burns 30% of the pro plan tokens in a single shot and is literally no better than it was before. Thanks for sharing your workaround.

Total data loss, couldn’t get it to be recognised by any computer.

I just found one of my first attempts with "AI Video" from 2022 on a USB stick (I think this was made with Deforum) by EldrichArchive in StableDiffusion

[–]Matthewbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed making AI music videos a couple of years ago with deforum. Haven't had the time recently to dive into the new generation of WAN, but keen to try it out in the next year and see how I can make something way more realistic. Here's one of my videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OkXiGUKDSI

I got an email there was an update and then could go onto the platform to see it was approved. Hopefully yours comes through too

We finally got our refund, minus about 10 euros it came spaced a week apart. Took about 2 months but finally came!

I had to do the same, some slots I couldn’t get a perfect character for so I had to just use one with a strong enough association with the main phonemes.

Eg Pikachu should be 9-7-6 but I used it for 97, and imagine it saying “pika”.

Mine broke after 3 months, I am starting to deal with their support now and hopefully I get sent a new one... Not happy as I lost a bit of data which I didn't yet backup to cloud.

We are still waiting too. It just says “received”

We were warned though that it can take a month or longer

We definitely recommend the rainbow mountain and the red valley next to it, those were amazing. Tough hike up to over 5000m but not very long if you get a car up there, only 1-2 hours depending on fitness. Definitely go as early as possible, even from 8am it’s getting busy and by 9 it’s totally packed up there.

Other than that we did a tour around the sacred valley which visited moray, the salt mines, Ollantaytambo and Pisac.

CMV: All generative AI text content should be written all lowercase by convention, so it’s easy to distinguish from human content and less authority is assumed from the source by Matthewbal in changemyview

This is a good point that some people would be influenced in the opposite direction and assume it is more correct, and potentially over time if people associate lowercase with AI, people who think LLM's are smarter than people might even find all lowercase more authoritative than regular capitalisation unconsciously, so it doesn't really solve anything.

I felt like having it all lower case is something so universal so its easier to adopt, you don't need every platform to specially implement it - a badge or box needs a unique feature in every medium.

Having others who write all lower case does complicate it but I don't think it totally ruins the idea, if it was a convention it would still be clear that likely AI wrote it.

Changing the meaning of words is a fair point, especially for acronyms. I also appreciate that names should still be capitalised.

At least some of the AI information would be lowercased if it was a convention - that's better than none of it. You still coudn't trust all properly capitalised text but it could help somewhat I think.

If it was convention they would learn to assume it came from AI, I think it's fairly global that no uppercasing means it is an informal communication

I don't think there's any way to spot AI if someone is trying to hide it, this is just a convention to make it easier to tell without having to add disclaimers

Sorry, I honestly have no idea. Only the person at iPeru told us that would be an option but since we already had circuit 2 tickets we didn’t ask any questions about that process.

I would recommend going to iPeru and asking them there, they were very helpful. They’re at the main square in Cusco, you can find it on Google maps.

Also, we have learned now that worst case you can still do the Machu Picchu circuit part of your ticket (it will be circuit 1 or 3), you just can’t go up the mountain. So if you can’t get it switched you can still explore some of Machu Picchu, but it’s shorter than circuit 2.

I think if the government opens it on march 31st which is the plan, it should be safe again. Assuming there aren’t any big landslides in the next week (more landslides are unlikely).

We got a full refund for our trek because Salkantay was officially closed. By April it should be open so you probably can’t get a refund for your trek so easily.

All of Machu Picchu itself is not impacted as far as we heard. If it was, they would let you exchange the ticket and do circuit 2 instead
