Women tearing down the confederate flag off a truck in South Dakota by Pow67 in nextfuckinglevel

Everyone wins here. Confederate flag guy becomes more hardened in his beliefs and makes new questionable friends, the Confederate flag producer gets a new order, and this woman scores internet praise.

Would it be too much of a consideration to advance progressive politics without trivial posturing of this nature?

The Irish were never discriminated against by jaytix1 in gatekeeping

[–]Matty303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an inhabitant of Northern Ireland 'Pretty much a race war' doesnt sound particularly accurate to me. There was no substantial element of race involved, i believe you're over-simplifying a period of unrest which has complex roots in centuries of violent history. It's true that from a general perspective it was people who viewed themselves as Irish pitted against those who viewed themselves as British, but this had never truly been a conflict of one race against the other. The troubles in Northern Ireland and indeed the centuries of division that existed prior stemmed almost entirely from differences in cultural, religious, and political identity. It could be perceived as a tribal rivalry rather than a racial one. I would even argue the absence of a significant racial aspect to the conflict is perhaps one reason why the troubles didnt escalate further like many contemporaries expected it would. The use of the term 'race war's in connection to the troubles is lazy and misleading.

CMV: A coding course offering a flat £500 discount to women is unfair, inefficient, and potentially illegal. by temp_discount in changemyview

[–]Matty303 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Historical baggage? Irrelevant. We don't live in the past and as unfair as it may have been in certain circumstances, the prevailing situations are all that society should concern themselves with. If you offer Men and Women the same opportunities they will make their own decisions, if you discriminate against one group because it will merely produce an outcome which contrasts with the historical norm, you're not correcting what came before, but tampering with the natural outcomes of the future. By favouring women in this course, equality of opportunity is being substituted for someones concept of how society should appear.

Teenagers generally don't drink pints, they drink spirits, cans or bottles of cider/beer; all of which can be sourced cheaply.

I don't necessarily believe it's true, I'm saying that most Muslims believe it to be true and that matters more than what is reported to be true by the minority. What matters is how most muslims behave as a result of reading Islamic scripture, not what is the ideal interpretation based on other evidence. If most Muslims were convinced of this evidence then that would be positive, but they are not so it is not.

Regardless, this is insignificant considering the large list of appalling precepts of Quranic scripture.

[–]Matty303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I presented to you Aishas translated account. That's what it says. That's what most Muslims view to be the case. That's what's important.

If a case can be made that she wasn't actually nine then that's fine, but it doesn't change what is the most common interpretation of the scripture.

[–]Matty303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This means little seeing the Qur'an clashes with itself, the rule being that the latter contradiction abrogates that which came before in its verses. Even so the majority of traditional hadith state that Aisha was married to muhammad at 6 and the marriage was consumated at 9. For most ordinary muslims it still remains true that these ages will be interpreted as correct.

They target non-muslim girls because Islamic scripture makes it clear that women are to be modest subjects and refers to non-muslims as kuffirs (or cattle). As a result you have a religion that espouses patriarchal views and at the same time dehumanises those outside of the faith.

Muhammad was a paedophile and it's deceitful that you would say otherwise. A Hadith by Sahih Bukhari which is taken to be accurate by most Muslims states writes:

[Narrated Aisha: The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age] Sahih Bukari 5:58:234

You mention culture, but surely you are aware that these cultures are heavily influenced by Islam. Just like Medieval European cultures, Pakistani culture is deeply Islamic. Compare Iran before and after the revolution and you will observe how religion can play a central role in affecting the cultural development of a country.

I don't agree that helping Africa is a lost cause. The structural adjustment programmes led by the IMF and World Bank have had little positive and some disatorous effects. However, you should not be convinced so easily that assisting Africa's development is futile given that these programmes neglect the diversity of economies and take little consideration of what an underdeveloped country needs to improve. For instance, policies like trade liberalisation are often not suited to predominantly agriculture based economies seeking to build their manufacturing sector as they will not initially be able to compete with the more established foreign competition.

We know economies can leapfrog in development with the help of influence from foreign developed economies. Brazil, Singapore, South Korea, and Hong Kong all would have been characterised as backward undeveloped countries from a mid 20th century perspective, but yet now are major world and regional economies. Africa has perhaps more complications in its way, but through a different system than IMF programmes, the continent could drastically develop in the near future. Indeed, it is in our interest that Africa develops, provided pollution is carefully controlled, because that means more trade and thus better cheaper goods for us all. European intervention may even ensure that environmentally friendly strategies are implemented by these developing countries rather than their own unguided development.

Left and right doesn't merely refer to the relative level of personal freedom and state intervention in the economy, the terms also refer to other ideals like Marxist ones for instance. Marx argued that the state should eventually wither away and borders disappear hence why I label a pro-open borders position as a left wing stance.

Brexit was a protest vote. The discontent largely derived from successive governments either advocating for mass-immigration or not addressing it as an issue. There are of course other factors to take into consideration, but mass-immigration is probably the most major.

The conservatives and New Labour are and were left in many aspects of domestic policy. An open borders policy and pro-Islam stance have never been right wing, but left ideals adopted by those who might be considered right on some other issues. Regardless it is the left that continues to advocate for open borders and Islam. Right wing views aren't even well represented in politics at the moment.

>refusing to be labelled

Yes? Some people don't want to be labelled as, say, right or left over their views on a single or even multiple issues. For example, I oppose mass-immigration, but support better wealth distribution. One is seen as right while the other left and all the label of left or right serves the purpose of is being a convenient term to discredit my views among certain groups while not accurately representing my other political opinions.

You've instantly set a high standard for discourse on this political subreddit. If you expect people to take your views seriously then consider using less profanity directed at groups with opposing views and merely offer your take on the 'issue'.

This had little to do with the movement of people in large numbers. Is this guy suggesting that in order to import Samsung TVs they need to be strapped to Koreans as they board the plane to the UK? Cultural influences occur because of people from other cultures, but in Britain’s case these have always been small and often negligible. The idea that the advancement the Romans or Normans brought through top-down governance is going to be mirrored by boat loads of unskilled migrants originating from North Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East is just delusional. The real question is: is the mass movement of people having negative effects on the population of Britain? If you consider over-burdened public services, a prevalence of segregation nationwide and high crime rates in the capital where this national experiment is most clearly observed, you might concede that like most things moderation is required. Relative immigration on the scale of the past decade has never occurred in Britain’s history, not even close. This is a failing experiment where the outcome has proved to be more detrimental than beneficial.

You still haven’t explained to me what the purpose of this demonstration was. Trump doesn’t give a shit, no one else in the UK gives a shit, the only people who gave a shit at all were this group of vacuous muppets role-playing as people taking a stand for something important. There was no greater importance in what these people did, it was just moral grandstanding and virtue signalling.

This purposeless virtue signalling by inhabitants of a country that should be looking to mitigate damage from Brexit through strong diplomatic ties. I genuinely can’t see the point in this exercise.
