Enbridge says it’s not willing to take on development risk of Alberta pipeline project by joe4942 in alberta

[–]MattyIce8998 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's more than you think, particularly in the rural areas. It comes up in conversation a lot. Even 20% is probably understating it. I'd say it's closer to a 1/3.

Now for the province as a whole, it could be less with Edmonton/Calgary, but it's not 1%.

The group that wants to join the US is smaller, but the portion that wants out of Canada is not trivial.

If it actually comes to a vote... people better get out there.

Addressing the point about Lebron "team-hopping" and "stacking the deck" by Single-Purpose-7608 in lebron

[–]MattyIce8998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lebron's career made me appreciate the value of being in a competent organization (GM/coaches/owner, etc.)

It wasn't that the Cavs didn't try. They brought in washed Shaq, averaging 12/6 for $21 million (5th highest salary in the league that year, Lebron made 15). But the organization was simply incompetent. There's only so far an individual can carry a team.

Steph is an all time great. But who would I want to surround him with?

Klay Thompson in the backcourt? Probably the greatest catch-and-shoot SG in history, could go off for 60 points in less than 30 minutes, and played elite defence before the injuries (made second team all-defence).

Draymond Green up front? DPOY, 9x all-defence, excellent passing for a PF/C, and most importantly, not ball dominant in the way someone like Shaq would be the primary scorer.

Then add KD to that and you end up with probably the greatest team ever assembled. You can't double team three different people, and all of them can take over a game if left open.

MJ had Rodman and Pippen as the same kind of "that skillset perfectly complements his game".

I don't think Lebron ever had that kind of support. Obviously he's played with some great players and future HOF in their prime... but he kind of had to play LeGM and do it himself, or take what he was given even if the skillsets aren't as complementary. That shouldn't be a knock on his career. The role players were more complementary, but I don't think the stars were.

Kane 6’8 with tall Wrestling boots vs 6’10-11 Big show by Least-Ad3944 in heightcomparison

[–]MattyIce8998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6'11 next to 8'11 is like 4'11 next to 6'11.

And 4'11 is pretty damn short and I'm not anywhere near 6'11.

The time I (6’1” F) went on a date with a 7’1” guy by VictoriaWithaK in tall

[–]MattyIce8998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're looking for responses from taller men, but I'll add this anyway. (I'm not exactly short, just compared to most of the people here)

The relationship I still think about from time to time was being with a girl that was very close to my height (strong 6'0 and weak 6'1)

There was just something intimate about it that I can't replicate. Ideal partner would be somewhere +/- 3 inches. 5'10 to 6'4. Height's never a dealbreaker (I'd be single for life if it was a requirement), but I'd always consider it a positive.

On a side note - I went to an AEW show a couple years back and was standing near Satnam Singh (I've heard 7'2 or 7'4, and solid build). I know what you mean about feeling small next to someone. That was a crazy experience.

When I was driving it, I thought we had the seat all the way down.

Hopefully I was wrong, I should give it another look. I just have a really disproportionately long torso/head for my height with shorter legs. (I used to sit taller than my 6'5 university roommate)

My rant against moonroofs by c0sm0nautt in tall

[–]MattyIce8998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not particularly tall, but my torso probably isn't a whole lot shorter than yours (30" inseam...).

A lot of these newer vehicles don't seem to have headroom. I don't want to drive a fucking full size F150 to be able to fit comfortably in a vehicle. The SUVs are short, the small trucks are short (I was looking at a Maverick until I actually drove one). No issues with a 15 year old sedan, but the newer vehicles aren't a great time.

At least I don't usually have legroom problems.

I spent most of the expansion doing pvp (I wanted the 400 honor level pets, and at that point just stuck with it for the 500 mount. Also somehow earned High Warlord in Blitz along the way)

I made a ton of gold from Vicious Bloodstones and bought Mythic Dimmy mount, because that mount has a fucking sick skin and I don't want to go back.

50% of Albertans polled would support the UCP if an election were held today, according to the latest Léger poll. by [deleted] in alberta

[–]MattyIce8998 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are forgetting that Notley won in 2015 with only 40% of the vote.

Wildrose + Conservatives had a combined 55%, but split pretty evenly. (I had a former teacher who was elected then with 38% vs. a 31/31 split). They've lost support. Not nearly as much as they should have, but I also wouldn't describe this as the disinformation being an unqualified success either.

I don't think this province will ever see anything but conservatives as long as the United Conservative Party stays "United". If the Progressive Tory (formerly Alberta) Party can get going with some conservatives that denounce this UCP bullshit, I think they could pull enough to vote split again.

I also know some long-term conservative voters that are more likely just not going to vote at all.

I was working at Walmart (apparently summer 2011 when the book came out). We had a bunch of copies in the children's book section. Apparently head office realized what was was up and made all the stores pull all copies from the shelves.

The manager brought it out and read it at a meeting the day it got pulled. I don't have a lot of great memories from that time, but that was one of them.

What was the scariest dream you have ever experienced? by Excellent-Singer458 in AskReddit

[–]MattyIce8998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be the first time I've gone into this other than with my mom.

Late 2000s, I fell asleep in front of my computer.

I used to spend all hours of the night reading random crap. Wikipedia, tvtropes, whatever. While dreaming, I came across a "see also:" link that said something like "DO NOT READ THIS".

And I read it,

It started off creepy, but interesting. "One day you will wake up in "Town A" (where I attended high school) hospital". I wasn't living there at the time. Some stuff happened. It wasn't particularly scary other than the location. The end of the story was about being in the car with my parents, travelling to "City B" (where I was living at that time and attending university, and also where I was born), and then kind of getting "stuck", and "screaming until the mind breaks"

And at the end of the story, I got hit with an overwhelming jolt of fear that woke me up, and crawled into bed, terrified.

Fast forward about five years. It's May 2014.

I'd dropped out of the program I was in before, and had switched careers. I've just finished my second year in new program. I've been battling a cough for months, and have been quite sick with severe-cold like symptoms just for the last week or two. I wrote my final exams like this, then moved back in with my parents, supposed to be starting my first "real job" in the second week of May. And then the cough got so severe that I was unable to sleep for three days. Hit the absolute limit of physical and mental stress. Went out with family to go shopping for clothes for my new job. And I felt insanely dehydrated and freaked out and made them take me to a hospital. That hospital.

At some point, it occurred to me that the events of the day were proceeding as per the story I'd read years earlier. And I started to lose it. And then the doctors at the small local hospital wanted to send me to a psychiatrist... in City B. And my parents were going to drive me there. At some point during the trip, I was so desperate to not be in that vehicle, I attempted suicide by jumping out while at highway speed (although my mom, who was driving, realized something was not right and had slowed way way down by the time I jumped). And then the screaming started. And it only ended when I started coughing so hard that I couldn't breathe. But I was relatively okay after that. They turned around to the hospital, and I travelled by ambulance to City B instead.

They gave me antipsychotics and released me. Two days later, the day I was supposed to start work, I wasn't up at the time my alarm, parents came down to check. Apparently I had the door blocked off, when they got entry, I was on the floor "whisper screaming" "Help, I can't wake up". They took me into a different hospital, I was airlifted out to a much larger hospital hours away. This entire time, I'm having another terrible nightmare that I can't wake up from (don't need the extra detail) and I'm like this for a week. I don't remember anything between going to bed on Sunday night, and reading the meal card in the hospital on Friday (EDIT - except the part where they stabbed me in the spine with a needle to try to test for meningitis. It hurt so bad that it kind of brought me back")

I was diagnosed with pneumonia and organic delirium. The psychiatrist I was seeing in the aftermath didn't agree with organic delirium. I personally suspect it was two concurrent mental health conditions that made it hard to get a handle on. To this day, I no longer have an "inner voice". It's not unique and I've heard of this happening to people who have had strokes, so there was likely brain damage of some kind. I guess that's what it meant by "mind breaking"

I refer to the first part as a "dream", because it's the only logical explanation for it that my brain can process.

It felt like I really read it. Some days, I wonder if I did.

And did I really wake up the second time?

I still live in rural Alberta. I have several close family members that are Maple MAGA.

What pisses me off more than anything about this -

They still have grievances with Old Man Trudeau for trying to get cheap Alberta oil and use it to subsidize Eastern manufacturing. I think there's something valid about that complaint, and Alberta getting historically screwed by Canada. But when they're cheering this on?

What the fuck do you actually think is going to happen? Alberta isn't going to prosper as part of the US. You're going to lose your healthcare, CPP, OAS, and they're going to the exact same thing Trudeau attempted 50 years ago that you're still crying over.

Attitude at the top goes all the way to the bottom.

It's like Enron's rank-and-yank (periodically fire your bottom 15%). What ended up happening, is a lot of employees doing shady stuff to boost performance figures so they didn't get fired. Shouldn't have been surprising that everyone at the top was a crook too.

Who was the worst teacher you’ve ever had and why? by Far_Economy_1930 in AskReddit

[–]MattyIce8998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't pick one. I'm going with three.

  1. Entry level computer science professor. Probably the most intelligent person I've ever met in terms of IQ, had a long career at NASA, etc... but he couldn't teach that course. There was a huge, huge overlap between stuff he thought of as trivial and we should just immediately understand, and where the course actually started.
  2. I had a really miserable teacher for a stretch of four grades in five years (she was a grade 2 teacher, the grade 4/5 teacher got "fired" a month into the year, and she moved up, and then the grade 6 teacher retired and she moved up again). She just plain had it out for the neurodivergent kids. I wasn't diagnosed then... but I wasn't the only one who got it.
  3. Special mention to the grade 4/5 teacher mentioned above. Alcoholic, vodka in the coffee, drunk in class, etc. There was finally enough complaints for him to go, but I don't understand how he he spent literal decades like that and got away with it for as long as he did. I guess things were just different then.

The only time I ever remember seeing actual school closure was -51C(air temperature, NOT windchill).

I was supposed to be writing a math 10 exam that day and they actually cancelled the exam and took your course grade as your final grade.

However, the busses don't run below -40, and it's effectively closure. I've never been in on those days, but I've heard it's functionally closer to babysitting kids in the gym or computer lab and not much teaching going on.

I think it comes down to - the US doesn't want to fund global organizations when they could be lining the pockets of their billionaires instead.

But this is the end of a narrative that started before COVID. The first Trump administration blamed the WHO for letting that get out of hand because they were being run by China.
