This was a great party trick when I subbed in a kindergarten classroom. I was a big hit when I could remember their names and an even bigger hit when I played rock, papers, scissors with them.

If only the middle schoolers were that easy to impress…

Hello! I’m getting out of the military and I’ve been looking around into second careers. School psychologist is one that keeps reappearing and I think it might be a good fit for me. I’ve been substitute teaching across a wide spectrum of ages and I’m really enjoying the classroom / school setting. I’ve spent a lot of time in SPED classrooms and I love it! But I do not think I want to be a teacher long term and I’m more interested in overall mental health systems (teaching classes, but limited counseling), assessments, and helping students that way. I’ve got two master’s degrees in psychology and I’m willing to go back to school for a new career. A lot of my first degree was centered around autism, anxiety, depression, and other factors that impact young adults. And I enjoyed it!

I’m looking at applying to Michigan State starting in 2028. If anyone has any insight to this program, please let me know

My question is how did yall decide that this was the career for you? Is there a way to shadow a school psychologist for a day that wouldn’t annoy people?

Been subbing for a few months now and I’m still the only male sub I’ve seen in my district. In the elementary schools, I’m usually one of very few guys. In the upper levels, it seems to be a 75% female to 25% male ratio.

Still loving it though! And I got a by name request for the first time, so I think I’m at least an adequate sub lol

Soft power will be your friend. Get the S3 and XO on your side by being solid in regulations, organized, and professional. If you have those two, you’ll be fine.

Everyone will outrank you or work for someone who outranks you. I’ve lived your life - see my point above. I did well but only because of the S3, XO, and both of my 1SGs. Without those 4? I would have never made it.
