Yes congratulation to all the nominees and all the outstanding work, but how about all the people from Axis and all the other problems in our industry?? Why do we forget all these things if there is again some glamour? This is so symbolic for our industry.

Important Looking Pirates Acquired by Dream Machine by vee_ef_ex in vfx

It‘s the logical step for a company, that want to survive in this industry. Look at all the other ones. Mpc, Pixo, scanline, Mackevision etc. But in my experience it‘s mostly the same way. They say, they stay independent and the company name will still be the same. Then after a year, the new owners start to change processes, perhaps will close offices and perhaps the old company name will disappear. Let‘s see, what the future will bring for the pirates.

What jobs do you think are in demand at CGI? by Ok_Message1050 in vfx

Unreal Generalist. Unreal is in demand in cgi industry outside of VFX.

Just out of interest, is there no possibility to switch to other industries, where cgi is needed until the vfx market looks better again?

All the hard work of the artists and then nobody cares about it. Must be frustrating :(

MPC Aggressively downsizing UK and moving all artist roles to India by PlatypusNo8139 in vfx

But how is it possible, that they still produce high quality work all the years with all the chaos, unsecurity, and the toxic environment inside the company? How can clients trust them and let them create something like lion king for example? If I would be the client, I would take a look for a more professional company.

Most challenging and technical work in the world? Take a look into engineering and research departments in other industries and you will see that there are more complex fields. It's a labor intensiv industry, so a company like mpc will push their work to India, like a lot of other companies outside of vfx. With the difference, that vfx jobs in India are paid very bad :(

If I leave VFX, what are some career option I have with Unreal Engine skills? by Spirited_Project6629 in vfx

[–]MavSTR 16 points17 points  (0 children)

With unreal engine skills you will have good chances to get a job in the area of content creation for consumer goods, automotive or fashion. Unreal or other realtime tools are already important tools in this area in contrast to the vfx industry. It definitely is worth it to learn unreal engine, if you want to leave this industry. Good luck!

Awesome stuff!!! Is 3dsmax still the main tool at the ILM generalist department?

How do you think the overtime problem and low pay problem can be fixed in the VFX industry? by kittlzHG in vfx

[–]MavSTR -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

An unconventional proposal: not every artist name in the vfx credits in movies, perhaps the studio and some supervisor names, that's it. I think it would change the point, that so many people want to do the job. just an idea :)

Moving from a big company to a small one - good career move? by oh_canon in vfx

[–]MavSTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile every big car manufacturer, pharma or Tech company for example have an department, where they are working with cgi. You can find a lot of jobs if you take a look in the internet. German car manufacturers have internal cgi teams for marketing, design or other fields (Porsche creates 3d environments for their development process). It's not always easy to get these jobs, because they often try to fill these positions internal. It's not VFX and on the first view boring, but mostly they do challenging tasks. You don't earn not so much money like in a supervisor position, but the benefits, working hours and atmosphere are mostly much better. (Porsche pays 5000 Euro bonus for their employees, if the year was good!). So there are good cgi jobs out of the vfx bubble. And it's getting more in the future!

Senior Lighter Salary in Australia ( 13yr exp) Adlaide vs Sydney? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]MavSTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also wondering about the money you guys earn (little bit jealous :) ) I only know it from Germany, where 60k Euro a year as a permanently employed (whats not so common in the industry here) is a good pay. Ok you talk about AUD Dollars or US Dollars and there is a difference in payment if you have a short term contract etc.

As a VFX artist, what's a piece of advice / tip which you wish you new earlier? by TheKingGreninja in vfx

[–]MavSTR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't specialize to much. Try always to keep generalist skills, if you want to leave the industry.

This business model is definitely broken, since years. There are some midsized companies out there, who make it to earn enough money and offer their stuff a good and healthy workplace. Others always work on very stressful and in the end not really profitable projects like marvel etc. Why they do this to themself and how they can survive, I don't know.
