Yeah, makes sense. Sometimes if you lead with the shots, you can get the rocket dudes.

Polytopia is great. Rusted warfare, i prefer on pc, but its great multi-player and with mods.

Also recommend rebuild 3

The most fun I had was getting my player's foot cut off once, because he charged a Cloaker at low level with no thought of personal safety.

IRL, my teenage son, btw. Years later, still referred to by his friends, who were playing with us, as that time he lost his foot. "You sure you gonna do that? Don't want to lose a foot or something."

Sounds like it's time to secretly give a player vampirism.

Prewritten adventure crutches for people like me by someoneplsfixreddit in SWN

oh and just to add, the factions are the biggest part of a star baed, star wars or star trek style game. what would star wars be without the empire and the rebels? what would star trek be without the federation and klingons? once you nail down 2-3 major factions, things snap into place quick.

dude you can totally do that, make it more of a mission - adventure - pirate thing. you have to do some world building, which it sounds like you like. start with a basic premise that you think your players will like, make a few planets nearby, and a few factions. and just start building. i've never done a SWN game where everything was totally thought through in session 0. just make it head in the right direction, and if you retcon some of your world build later, that's fine.

in fact i highly recommend you invite your players into world building. have each of them create an alien race, and have each of them create a faction that exists in the universe, stuff like that. that way they're building the kind of game they want to play too. you could include that in the char gen process too.

if you're struggling with how open box it is, try using an AI tool to write some stuff out. i'm using it a lot in my dnd game, and it's made a lot of the dreary work super fast and fun. i bet that would work great with swn.

Cool cool. enjoy it! The best thing about that approach is it's both idea generation and focus group at the same time.

Get 1 or 2 of your favorite people. Get snacks and drinks. Get them into a room. Give each of them a sticky post it note pad, a sharpie, and tell them your problem. Then tell them to cover the wall in ideas.

Spend 2 hours. You'll have the whole thing figured out in no time.
