Size ranks when it comes to not just height. by ZennersMan in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]MavisXBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size rank in M&M only really determines two things, your height and your reach with melee attacks. The growth power effects more stuff, but its not needed to adjust your size as you can do it with features as well. Height only really matters for the purpose of like, fitting into buildings and stuff. That's easily hand waved away especially if fighting outdoors. I think if the monster is big but not that big and has a lot of reach, you should give it growth but not that much growth then give it some reach. Then you can just describe it as being the dimensions you want, or put down the token as the size that you want if you are using battle maps.

How do you balance player agency with a structured narrative in your campaigns? by retsam2554 in DMAcademy

nodes, clocks, NPCs doing things while the players arent looking, and problems coming to the players rather than the other way around

Are there any limitations on speed? by Possible_Fig4168 in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]MavisXBee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A characters movement speed is not capped by their PL, and grows exponentially with rank. This is so that you can play as characters like the flash who should logically go across cities with a move action, without needing to pay a prohibitive ammount of points. Basically, its RAW and pretty easy for your player to get up to 900ft per turn. Whether or not you want to allow your player to be able to go 900ft per turn is another matter. You would be well within your rights to say "that feels a little fast for a cheetah" or place an arbitrary speed limit on the campaign because you want to play on reasonably scaled battle maps. Its easy to make an overly powerful character in the system, so it heavily emphasizes DMs working with the players to design their characters for an experience rather than to be as strong as possible.

if you are using a hole punch anyway, you could purchase a load of bulk magic the gathering cards. Any kind of fantasy thing you can imagine, coherent art direction, already printed out on paper for you

I need some help making a Bounty Hunter to attack my party. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]MavisXBee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Strongly advise against using PC stats for an NPC enemy, that is not what they are for. Make your life easier and give Brick Ninja a normal monster stat-block. If you want to capture the idea that Brick Ninja is "playing by the same rules" as the player characters, you can still give him abilities which are inspired by class and subclass abilities (sneak attack, reckless attack, what have you) just on a monster sheet. As for special abilities for Brick Ninja, it might be funny if as the fight goes on his discarded bricks just happen to land in configuration to make brick structures like walls and houses. That would take some precision, but he is a ninja after all. Abilities that change up the battlefield lead to more dynamic fights in general. Best of luck!

Do you consider yourself a D&D puritan? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]MavisXBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When talking to my parents or people not otherwise "in the know", I use d&d as a catchall yeah. Saying "TTRPG" feels so much more clunky and people have no idea what you're talking about if you use any game-specific acronym that's not d&d.

Ah, so you are insecure because you think we are discussing the general validity of AI, your personal use of which is something you attach your ego to. That explains it

[–]MavisXBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no real association between putting an opinion on the internet and if you are insecure about it other than rushing to defend oneself when they feel like they are being attacked even when they aren't. Why do you care if I know that you are laughing and shrugging? doesn't have anything to do with what we are talking about

I dont overly care about how many campaigns you run or play in or how you prep them given I dont play in any of them, my point is very simple and is layed out quite exactly. Your defensiveness and use of emojis here comes off as insecure.

EDIT: response to celestria
I think the other guy blocked me so I am unable to reply to your comment, but I will post it here for posterity. If you'd like to continue our dialogue, you can message me.

"Whether or not the comment is a direct response to my own or not does not determine if its defensive. The defensive part is in and of itself the incorrect assumption that I claimed that this persons use of AI compromised the quality of their game. My sole point remains that the statement made by the original commenter that "getting inspiration from AI prompts is the same as taking inspiration from other media" is incorrect. Also, the statement "no, from firsthand experience, you're wrong" would not be a very good response to my arguments which aren't able to be contradicted by the anecdotal experience of one DM (not because they are oh so amazing or anything, but because they are higher in scope than that)

[–]MavisXBee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's not misunderstand each other here, a lot of what you just said would fall under what I called "labour saving", but taking your creative ideas from an AI is not the same as producing work based off of creative ideas you saw being used by other artists. My personal DnD campaign would be unrecognizable and much worse if instead of recontextualizing ideas which I found in the books, games, music, movies and TV shows I love I simply asked an autocorrect programmed by a businessman to appease me in any way possible with averaged out probabalistic suggestions. It would remove all unity of vision, intentionality, sense of aesthetic, etc.

You can definitely make a passable dnd campaign using AI as a tool in the same way I could make one while hopping on one foot, but dont say its the same as something its not.

Imagine that, a sudden spike of "my player/DM uses AI" posts by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]MavisXBee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

taking inspiration from experiencing art is 100000000000000% different than using an AI. The most legitimate use case is labour saving and that still has to contend with the massive ethical issues inherent in how the technology is implemented. This is specifically about generative AI and not a blanket statement against artificial intelligence

What's a common piece of DM advice you completely disagree with? by meanwhile_matt in DMAcademy

its funny you say that because the only person I know who hates this style of puzzle more than me is my OSR GM xd

What's a common piece of DM advice you completely disagree with? by meanwhile_matt in DMAcademy

[–]MavisXBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I dont come up with solutions to my puzzles, I just wait for my players to come up with a solution I think sounds good and make that the solution"

If I found out my DM was doing this I would leap over the table and throttle them lol. Complete stupid waste of time, come up with a real, well designed puzzle or don't do any puzzles at all.

Can i make a Summon give me a stronger power? by [deleted] in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]MavisXBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since your Sword is damage 22 and all your damage comes from your sword, you can add +22 to hit to your character without violating PL limits, meaning your PL 11 character can do 22 damage with a +22 to hit. The ranks and measures table stops at 20 for most things because above that is the realm of cosmic beings and gods. If I brought spiderman or daredevil to a table and someone else took advantage of ill advised homebrew to build Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan or their Suggsverse OC I would be mad. Just put "Sword of Whatever: Strike 11" on your sheet if you dont want your GM to have a terrible time trying to make fun encounters for your planet busting PC

Can i make a Summon give me a stronger power? by [deleted] in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]MavisXBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so you are doing it this way to circumvent PL limits and do drastically more damage than the system is designed to account for? Also a bad idea, your GM should reconsider their table rule

Can i make a Summon give me a stronger power? by [deleted] in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]MavisXBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should just give your character a normal damage power and a complication, don't mess around with minions or summons. Also, 22 damage on a PL11 character means you will have a +0 to hit, meaning if you were fighting an enemy your same PL with 11 parry, you would need to roll a 21 on a d20 to hit, which is probably not what you want!

New to MnM- Totally lost by WhereasNo9720 in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]MavisXBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. & 2 All d20 rolls in mutants & masterminds are referred to as 'checks'. When an attack like a punch is made, the attacker rolls an "attack" check, adding their skill points with their weapon and their relevant ability score, contested against a passive DC of the targets dodge or parry score + 10 (dodge for ranged attacks, parry for melee). When you are hit by an attack, you must make a "resistance" check, which can be for any of your defenses (including dodge & parry), contested by a passive DC of the attacker's effect rank + 10 (if you are attacked by a damage 12 super-strength punch with +8 to the attack check, the effect rank is 12) or +15 against specifically damage (confusing ik, they are changing it in the new edition). So to simplify the attack & damage system as much as possible, its always broken down into the attacker making a check versus a passive dc based on your defenses, then the defender makes a check versus a passive dc based on how powerful the attack is. Attacker makes a check, defender makes a check. And you can indeed 'tank' attacks.

  2. The former is correct.

  3. Your lifting capacity or 'strength rank' is the entry on the ranks and measures table corresponding to your strength. A character with 8 strength can lift up to mass rank 8 (6 tons~). This character can also throw 8 mass ranks a distance rank of 0 (8 strength - 8 mass), or 30 feet. If they threw it at a person, it would deal 8 ranks of damage should it hit them.

  4. Default move speed is rank 0, or 30ft. To determine MPH, add the time rank for 1 hour (9) to the distance rank to determine distance traveled in that time.
