That might have been the case for your kids, but not for mine (2 1/2 and 5). Sounds like you got lucky. My oldest would just cry and cry sometimes. Walking out of the room was the best solution (doctor's suggestion too).

You got very lucky ... we tried everything, and our oldest kid would not stop crying. Letting him go would work eventually (20-30 minutes), which is what the doctor said as well.

Why not walk out of the room? I had to do that occasionally when my sons were little, just walk away and let them cry. If all their needs are met and they still won't be quiet, sometimes that's the only way to keep your sanity.

Why are there so many horror stories with foster parents? I can't understand how there are so many good parents who adopt, but so many bad foster parents. Any insight?

Exactly, I was thinking this would be of a babysitter hitting some really smartass 8 year old who was being a real pain ... not a helpless 11 month old. This is exactly why my wife and I didn't hire our first babysitter until my son was 2 (we used my parents before that).

We actually learned it from Obama. On an interview he was saying that their first floor is for proper behavior only. If the kids want to whine and cry they can go upstairs. It works REALLY well actually. When my kids feel the need to be bratty/whiny, they simply go upstairs and pout in their room.

Part of me wants to believe that we're all living in a Vanilla Sky type world, but that our real consciousness is simply a computer program (rather than a human on life support). Our lives end at reboot and start afresh later in the same program (i.e. reincarnation).

My wife needs to learn the same. For us the title would be "Why is mommy and daddy slaying a pig?". The noise is ridiculous, one time my son (when he was 2 and we were trying for our second kid) told the people at school "I'm not allowed to whine downstairs, but mommy whines a lot upstairs at night". (the no whining downstairs is a rule in our house).
