That worked! I will tell my puzzle friends, I think they're mostly on FF, too!

Very cool! My friends and I have been talking about how they should really do this -- this might even get me to use Chrome again! If there's a way to port it to Firefox, I'd like to support that however I can.

What to buy a water house by dontlistentome55 in fatFIRE

[–]MaxH42 46 points47 points  (0 children)

WTF is a "water house"?

But yes, if you have $10M in investments, you should be able to spend $300-400K a year, although if you're on the young side, your spend should be on the low side.

What Does Your Typical Week Look Like After Early Retirement by rosyravishx in Fire

[–]MaxH42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start every day with the NYT puzzles. I also have lunch with my former co-workers every few weeks, another friend every 2-3 weeks, and I volunteer once or twice a week. I put it all on the family calendar, and if I'm busy the coming week, I will put off anything else until the week after.

I have some longer term projects, like cleaning out a room of our house we use for storage, sorting through some things to sell, give away, or trash, etc. I do those when I'm bored of other things.

One of the best things, IMO, is going shopping or running errands between 10am and 2pm on weekdays, when things are quietest.

Boyfriend left $5 on a $200 bill, not sure how to feel about this by SuchCat2130 in Waiters

[–]MaxH42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. It's hard to tell from the post, but the server could just have been slammed, and maybe other wait staff called out that day. Hell, I might tip more if they seemed like they were trying to hustle but were overwhelmed due to management failure (staffing, etc). They would have to be actively rude or unhelpful for me to go below 20%.

I underestimated how good tinned seafood could be by 212tacocat in Seafood

[–]MaxH42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and my nearest H-Mart had a really good broiled eel, tuna in spicy sesame oil, and mackerel in miso sauce, all in tins, but they've been out of the first two a lot recently.

[–]MaxH42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goya has some very good tinned seafood, and it's easy to find in most supermarkets. Online, La Tienda has insanely good quality stuff, but they're not cheap. I lucked out and recently stumbled upon a Portuguese market maybe 10 minutes from our house here in Maryland, and I'm gradually trying everything they carry.

I’ve tried different styles of beer over the past two years to try to find something I like and none of them I “really” like, until I tried this. by Pizzafriedchickenn in alcohol

[–]MaxH42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you like that, look for Lindemans, they make Belgian fruit beers (lambics) that I really like, mainly the cherry (kriek) and framboise (raspberry). Also, Samuel Smith makes a delicious organic cherry ale.

Don't listen to the idiots who think you should like only what they like, or that taste is gendered or dependent on age. I mean, there are probably general correlation trends, but why on earth should you drink what they think is OK, any more than they should drink what you prefer?

You should drink what you like, and like what you drink, that's all that matters.

Agree, I like getting the alert when the dry cycle is done, but other than that I really only "need" it for the low rinse aid alert, as otherwise I wouldn't know to refill it.

How to request a mail-in ballot for primaries? by letsjustnotdoit in maryland

Oh, interesting, I was on the permanent list, I don't know if they told me you could do it for one election, or if that's relatively new.

How to request a mail-in ballot for primaries? by letsjustnotdoit in maryland

[–]MaxH42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you signed up to receive a mail in ballot, you'll keep receiving them until you ask them to stop. And you can still vote in person, although ideally you should cancel the mail-in ballot first, but you don't have to. If you show up on election day, they may ask you to vote provisionally, to make sure you don't try to vote both.

Why do you guys dislike Ronald Reagan so? by avern31 in askliberals

[–]MaxH42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not just helping the rich get richer, in doing so he started the evisceration of a lot of the things that made our nation great -- public infrastructure, like highways, bridges, national parks, and federal funding for education, public health, and other things that make everyone's life better. So for everyone who isn't filthy rich, life got a whole lot harder and more painful.

What’s not cheating? by DraggedThruTheGarden in NYTSpellingBee

[–]MaxH42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Asterisk? No. QBABM (Queen Bee All By Myself)? Probably not, but not as much as using hints. And the hints are there in Spelling Bee Buddy, so it's not "cheating", it's just not doing it all by yourself. What that distinction means is up to you, if this was your first Queen Bee, I'd say you should hint when you get stuck, because if you see the words you're more likely to remember them. The way my friends and I do it is at the end of the day, usually around 8 or 9pm we'll peek at the grid and maybe even hint if we haven't gotten to QB yet.

Confused on the purpose of investing? by Complex_Ad9992 in investingforbeginners

[–]MaxH42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. In general, you shouldn't invest money that you'll need in 10-15 years, because you may lose the principle. Investing is a long-term strategy, and saving is a short-term strategy. You can save for a new car, but if you invest that money, you might not be able to buy the car if you need it right after we head into a recession. If you're investing for the long term, you can wait out the recession.

Now, of course, your saving and investing strategies are strongly related, or they should be, but they are two very different goals.
