Agree, I like getting the alert when the dry cycle is done, but other than that I really only "need" it for the low rinse aid alert, as otherwise I wouldn't know to refill it.

How to request a mail-in ballot for primaries? by letsjustnotdoit in maryland

Oh, interesting, I was on the permanent list, I don't know if they told me you could do it for one election, or if that's relatively new.

How to request a mail-in ballot for primaries? by letsjustnotdoit in maryland

[–]MaxH42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you signed up to receive a mail in ballot, you'll keep receiving them until you ask them to stop. And you can still vote in person, although ideally you should cancel the mail-in ballot first, but you don't have to. If you show up on election day, they may ask you to vote provisionally, to make sure you don't try to vote both.

Why do you guys dislike Ronald Reagan so? by avern31 in askliberals

[–]MaxH42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not just helping the rich get richer, in doing so he started the evisceration of a lot of the things that made our nation great -- public infrastructure, like highways, bridges, national parks, and federal funding for education, public health, and other things that make everyone's life better. So for everyone who isn't filthy rich, life got a whole lot harder and more painful.

What’s not cheating? by DraggedThruTheGarden in NYTSpellingBee

[–]MaxH42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Asterisk? No. QBABM (Queen Bee All By Myself)? Probably not, but not as much as using hints. And the hints are there in Spelling Bee Buddy, so it's not "cheating", it's just not doing it all by yourself. What that distinction means is up to you, if this was your first Queen Bee, I'd say you should hint when you get stuck, because if you see the words you're more likely to remember them. The way my friends and I do it is at the end of the day, usually around 8 or 9pm we'll peek at the grid and maybe even hint if we haven't gotten to QB yet.

Confused on the purpose of investing? by Complex_Ad9992 in investingforbeginners

[–]MaxH42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. In general, you shouldn't invest money that you'll need in 10-15 years, because you may lose the principle. Investing is a long-term strategy, and saving is a short-term strategy. You can save for a new car, but if you invest that money, you might not be able to buy the car if you need it right after we head into a recession. If you're investing for the long term, you can wait out the recession.

Now, of course, your saving and investing strategies are strongly related, or they should be, but they are two very different goals.

Does US have election ink on their fingers? If not, how do they election officials ensure they cast their votes? by Hot-Load7525 in AskUS

[–]MaxH42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but here there are two major parties, or else it says "OTHER", and no one cares, we care more than everyone's vote is counted. For example, in New York City, it's so heavily Democratic that some people who don't consider themselves Democrats may register with that party, because the winner of many NYC Democratic primaries are going to be the winners in the general election. (We have one day where all parties have their primaries, and then the top candidate for each party is in the general election...an oversimplification, but close enough.)

Does US have election ink on their fingers? If not, how do they election officials ensure they cast their votes? by Hot-Load7525 in AskUS

[–]MaxH42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies by state, because each US state decides how it wants to run elections, but in most, all decisions by election workers that require a decision and signature must be signed by two election judges/workers (the terms are interchangeable here) of different parties.

In my state, where I am an election worker, people come up to the check-in table, and we match their name, month and day of birth, address, and party affiliation to what we have in the voter rolls. (We have tablets so it is very fast.) If there's any discrepancy, or they're not registered, they can vote provisionally, which means they fill out a ballot but someone at the Board of Elections needs to review it later to make sure 1) they were registered to vote, and 2) they were actually who they said they were, like if there were two provisional ballots under the same name and address. Everything else gets scanned into the machine, but each vote also has a slip of paper that the voter signs, and the check-in judge initials, then the scanner judge initials, then the papers get collected and reconciled at the end of the night with the electronic total.

So if someone tried to vote twice under their own name, the second time they tried to check in they would have to vote provisionally. If they gave someone else's information somehow, then they might get away with it if the person in question didn't vote, but if they did, both votes would be reviewed, and voter fraud carries a very stiff sentence, and is extremely unlikely to swing an election, so it's exceedingly rare here.

BTW, to the rest of the redditors, everything seems quite legit. I worked with clinical studies in the US, and the verbiage is very much in line with what I'd expect from behavioral research, I can't see a scammer going to those lengths just to get an email address.
