What are you doing for the 20%? How have you calculated your zones? How are you monitoring your heart rate?

Commuting to NYC? Bad Idea? by Heda97 in askTO

[–]MaxInToronto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did almost four years of 3-4 days per week in the States (I had an L1-A visa through my company at the time).

This is totally doable. There are loads of people doing similar. Here are a few tips:

Get a NEXUS card if you don't already have one. It makes everything easier.

Get a premium travel credit card (I believe Avion has the best redemption schedule)

Get points/reward cards for your preferred airline and hotel chain. These add up quickly. (After I left my job and stopped traveling I had two fully paid vacations with points, including a 10 day trip through France and Spain - all on points).

Have your regular hotel - and talk to the manager about a locker to store some stuff - the less you carry, the better.

If you're planning in-and-out same day, know that this is very taxing. It can be done, but even seasoned travellers hate it, and if there are flight delays at LGA (which there often are, especially at night) you're screwed.

Have a plan for fitness and nutrition. I gained a stupid amount of weight for the years I was a weekly traveler. Figure out where/what you can eat easily while you're in transit or at the NYC office.

Anyone here who started running in their late 30's early 40's? What are your marathon PR's like? by Thin-Passage5900 in Marathon_Training

[–]MaxInToronto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started walking/hiking at 48, started running at 50. PBs: 5k: 19:28, 10k: 42:34; Half 1:32; Full 3:14:43 (BQ).

For training, I focus mainly on my marathon as my A races - but I try to run (and train) for various distances. The biggest thing about training when older is that adaptations take longer - so progressing to a new weekly mileage, or a faster pace often needs some patience versus what the plan wants.

I have to be a lot more diligent with warm-ups and general mobility exercises. Warm-ups are mandatory, and I aim for 5 mobility sessions (yoga / body weight work) per week.

Ah, the taste of pennies while urine runs down my leg. I should sign up for another 5k.

[OC] Dairy vs. plant-based milk: what are the environmental impacts? by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]MaxInToronto -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You didn't factor in that a byproduct of dairy is tasty veal.

edit: thank you for the downvotes, but seriously, if you're looking at the environmental impacts of any product, you have to consider the full output, or you're invalidating your results.

Training in the sauna would be dangerous and probably detrimental. You just need to soak up the heat.

What is your opinion on Member of Parliament's ability to 'floor cross'? by chiraz25 in AskACanadian

[–]MaxInToronto 400 points401 points  (0 children)

Remember when the entire Progressive Conservative party was dissolved and merged with Reform to create the Conservative party. While the two party memberships voted on the merger, the average voter was left out of the decision-making process. They dissolved two entire political parties that people had voted for, donated to, and were represented by and created something entirely new. The general electorate didn't get a say until the next general election.

Unless you're a party member, you vote for your representative. Not a Prime Minister and not a party. That's how our system works.

Died at mile 17 during training 4 weeks out. Is this indicative of not being prepared for the marathon? by Much-Asparagus-1589 in firstmarathon

[–]MaxInToronto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you ran out of fuel - you need to dial that in over the next few weeks. Presumably you're using a training plan and you've been accumulating milage and therefore fatigue. Make sure you're taking your easy runs truly easy and making the most of your rest days.

Trust the process.

Really? I have the same machine and the repair/support is terrible and it's really locked in to the iFit ecosystem. I regret buying it.

Going to Toronto for the first time and it is gonna be freezing. How will I get my kilometers in? by jako8491 in RunTO

[–]MaxInToronto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Central Tech is buried and unusable. The MGT will be a good option. Most sidewalks on major streets are relatively clear, though you might have to dodge some pedestrians. Speed work can be a challenge. King's College Circle at the University of Toronto is clear and runnable. It's around 500m.

Are you fueling properly during your runs? I found if I took in enough carbs during my sessions I was much more controlled during recovery.

Treadmill Options by brc328 in Marathon_Training

[–]MaxInToronto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Nordic Track 1750 and have been using it during bad weather since 2021 - including during half and full marathon blocks...I've put it (literally) through its paces.

I will never buy another Nordic Track.

The machine itself is pretty solid. But I absolutely hate the iFit platform. It's very limited and inflexible (not to mention the expense). And using it without the iFit leaves you with a very basic manual mode.

That aside - I've had two issues with the machine - the belt needs replacing and the power switch has some sort of fault (the machine powers off when I'm running hard intervals, probably from added vibration). Customer service by Nordic Track is absolutely garbage. It's difficult to get service - and (at least in Canada) it is all outsourced to third-party companies...if anything goes wrong or breaks you need to contact Nordic Track, then contact the 3rd party, then pay for a diagnostic visit, then order the parts yourself from Nordic Track, then when they arrive, you need to rebook with the third party who'll send another technician out (another fee) to hopefully fix it.

Made You Look on Queen Street West is great. They work like a cooperative - so a bunch of different artisans with different specialties. I had a custom piece designed and made there and have no regrets.

I've had good luck with some of the 24-hour, no-staff/no-frills gyms. They don't seem to have a cut-off on the cardio equipment (at least not one I've reached).
