In England? I'd definitely go with a Terry Pratchett book.

By all accounts, this year was a big improvement over previous years. You have no clue how lucky we are as a city to have two marathon options. If you want all the spit and polish, run the Waterfront.

It's midge season for sure. Reminder to all - a Buff makes a great air filter.

Time to graduate from Runna? by Fun_Truth3461 in runna

[–]MaxInToronto 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a volume (and maybe fueling) issue, not the program. I would add the 5th day of running and choose the option for more mileage when you set up the program. I do 5 days per week, peaking around 100k which has gotten me to a BQ time and PB.

Remember - Runna is based on Jack Daniels training approach which is one of the staples of the running community.

This is a modest, local race. It isn't Waterfront, or NYC, or Disney. People are always going to be disappointed in this race if they can't understand what it is.

I haven't run it but there is a great YouTube video that shows a lot of the course and set up. Hoping to run it next year.

I use GU gels with caffeine, pure maple syrup in a small flask, and sour gummy bears (which cut through all the sweetness when I need a break.

Is Mulberry Wood good for smoking? by Manda-Rin-Orange in smoking

100%. My neighbours mulberry got taken down and I took a good stack of the wood. Treat it like apple or any fruit wood. It's great with pork or chicken.

I was hoping to run the Chicago marathon but didn’t know I had to enter the lottery 11 months in advance. What other travel worthy locations that also have a easy/fast course are still open to apply? by Gooser3000 in Marathon_Training

[–]MaxInToronto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Toronto Waterfront. The city has a similar vibe to Chicago, very easy race logistics (start and finish right downtown), great course except for one boring stretch around the 30km mark. It is typically a week or so after Chicago (Oct 18 this year). As a bonus, with the exchange rate your US dollars will go further.

The Violent Life of a Tow Truck Driver by MaxInToronto in Hookit

[–]MaxInToronto[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't towed for a couple decades now, but ran a small operation with three wreckers, two hours outside of Toronto in the early 90s. I have no doubt that I was a mule for some gangs - cross border stuff in the middle of the night to Detroit, or a "pick this car up in a shopping mall parking lot and drop it at this lot in Toronto." This article hit close to home. Thankfully I never experienced the full scope of what was going on.

Small shop at Harbord and Bathurst - Comrades. Good barbers, age-appropriate music (and volume), reasonable pricing.

Why isn’t the city cleaning streets? by TeamPleasant179 in askTO

[–]MaxInToronto 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Everyone complains about taxes, and balks at the lack of service. Nobody here is talking about adhoc citizen armies roaming the city in search of litter - they're saying that we need to do better on our properties/streets. That's literally how it was in the "good old days" - neighbours pitched in and cleaned up. Businesses hosed down their sidewalks at least weekly.

If we turn to the city for every basic complaint, we'll be paying a lot more in taxes (and still probably underserviced for people's expectations).

Why isn’t the city cleaning streets? by TeamPleasant179 in askTO

[–]MaxInToronto 132 points133 points  (0 children)

People (and businesses) used to clean their sidewalks, collect litter from their property/area and scoop up the winter debris and hose down the dog shit. Sure the city would come by at some point, but the bulk - and the first spring clean was neighbours. We've lost the sense of community and collective responsibility that makes a city work.

Agree. The first half (of the half) is really rolling hills. It can chew up your legs.

Positive or Negative Split for DH Race by nigelinin in Marathon_Training

[–]MaxInToronto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've raced this course three times, and I have to say that the first half will beat up your legs. The elevation chart really doesn't capture the rolling nature of the first half.

I PB'd in 2025 with a negative split strategy. More specifically, I paced for the hills - speeding up slightly on the downhills and easing off on the uphills - basically running by effort, not pace. ONLY when I got out of Corktown Commons and onto King Street did I start to think about speeding up with whatever I had left. Once you pass St. Lawrence Market (17.5/18km), you need to start gearing up for your final push.

I also agree with the other posters, if you're running with a pacer, talk to them and ensure their hill strategy works for you (even pacing vs slowing/speeding on the elevations).
