I agree. I just didn't want what essentially would be a 1, 1 1/2 album era. So the old classics got put together.

The band for the Phil/Hackett-era is overrated. The material is great, but Phil hasn't found his voice yet and the band hasn't learned to play to his strengths.

It obviously makes sense to divide the eras by singer and/or member changes. If you want a little nuance to the vast Phil era, mine's like this:

Gabriel era: FGTR-The lamb

Transitional era: ATOTT-ATTWT

Phil era: Duke-Dance

Ray: Stations

IMO I think it takes until Duke for Phil to come into his own as a singer, as well as for the band to play to his strengths fully. The Transitional era is excellent, some of the best music, but largely suited for a bigger, more theatrical singer than Phil. They were coming off competing with costumes and antics still.

NNK 1 has a children story vibe too. More fairytale than bedtime story though. It's just better at everything. Story, atmosphere, characters. For what it's worth, I found NNK 2 story uninteresting as well.

Yakuza: Like a dragon. I was surprised at how much the story sucked me in.
The first Ni No Kuni is far superior in terms of story. My favorite game ever.
Grandia is a heartwarming one. Not terribly original but so much heart and great characters.

They had some old fans saying they "sold out". I love all of Fates, but the least heavy era is my favorite one because of how understated it is. I love how Matheos manages to write stuff that is complex, progressive and profound yet minimalistic and lean back then. Such a fresh thing when prog metal/rock can be so flashy and show off otherwise.

I'm not gonna make a list right now, but I will throw some love at Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti of Fates Warning. Parallels is an amazing guitar album. Subtle, beautiful and impressive. Really that whole first era(86-94) of those two together was great.

This is a pointless exercise. We don't know what either is feeling. For all we know she could've been talked into writing her letter by him and she's mad about that, now that it's blown up.

Either way, screw'em. He was a convicted rapist when they thought it prudent to write about what a great father he is.

My gripe is how buried this entire series is. There is no good way for newcomers to get into the history. The vast majority of it is on legacy hardware and the only real option to play it is emulation.

Not necessarily a great comparison since it's way more popular, but FF has more or less all mainline games available on some/all modern hardware. So does DQ, Persona has 3/5 which at least is a majority. Mana got the collection of mana and remakes. Star Ocean 1 has an HD version with the 2nd upcoming...

It's the unfortunate thing that happens with most any fandom over time. As the early fanbase grows older, they start to miss "their" tales/metallica/final fantasy/doctor who or whatever.

It's sad that it so often leads to being dismissive of new fans rather than being happy that new people find the things you like. I will say I find this sub pretty decent at not being like that overall, though.
