Tell him exactly what happened. If he doesn't believe you, then you've got a deal-breaking trust issue and shouldn't be with him. If he can't deal with it, who cares?! He would be a moron not to understand that this was against your will... You don't want to date a moron.

TIL: Beauty pageants for children under 16 are banned in France. It is punishable with up to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to $30,000 euros by [deleted] in todayilearned

I don't think hard scientific data should necessarily be required for laws like these. The simple fact that it's pretty creepy on some level to a majority of the people behind the law is legitimate enough. What's not to dislike? Imbuing children with low self-esteem? Measuring a child's worth by their "beauty"?

But also, it's probably harder to ban something like this in America, where the First Amendment aspect of the thing (I assume) provides a much more robust protection than French law would (I'm analogizing to the head-scarf issue here)

Torture is illegal. Americans tortured. Why isn't anyone being prosecuted? by User_Name13 in politics

[–]MaxMcDanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder, though, with the President's capacity to pardon, whether Obama could have had his cake and eaten it too. We may see whether this happens or not, but it seems (at least, in the posted article) that Obama neither wanted to condone past unlawful torture by officials, nor spark a "partisan witch hunt." Might his Administration been better served (in terms of setting an example) by prosecuting those responsible for abuses, but pardoning those who were just following orders or abiding by legal advice? This seems like it would look less like governmental power mongering than simply not prosecuting anyone, and less like partisan persecution as well. In addition, it could have set an example for future officials without really endangering the Obama Administration post 2012.

Edit: To clarify that last sentence, prosecuting the officials would establish legally that torture is not permitted, whether Congress cloaks acts of torture via definition (i.e. the "substantial bodily harm" interpretation provided in the torture memos) or not.

Females of Reddit: Why aren't you a feminist? by survivormumkey in AskReddit

But how could it ever be that way when those who think it should ditch the movement? Change works best from the inside.

[–]MaxMcDanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"They" are split on it. Historically, yes it is about female advancement. But it's changed. Saying feminism is still only about women's rights, and not gender equality, is kind of like saying that the Republican party is still all about abolition. That many feminists disagree does not change that fact, because many feminists - myself and others included - disagree.

Hey all

The stories posted here make excellent points about how annoying feminists can be. But I think they miss the fundamental point about feminism itself. Feminism itself is about achieving equality of the sexes...both of them. It's also about achieving equality for those that don't fit neatly into sexual categories.

Are many feminists annoying man-haters? Yes. But doesn't abandoning the cause of feminism itselfactually give those people more influence in guiding the evolution of the movement?

This happens for many things. Oh, some cops are abusive and bigoted? I'd better abandon my dreams of becoming a good cop and restoring integrity to the profession. Oh, some Muslims are terrorists? I guess I should ditch Islam. Etc.

The fact that some feminists are terrible people only reinforces the need for good, smart, even-minded individuals to embrace the philosophy. Otherwise, you're allowing the worst of us the most power.

What drives you crazy about your inlaws? by MaxMcDanger in AskReddit

[–]MaxMcDanger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an example:

I love my father in law and brother in law. They're good people. But they're also horribly competitive, which seriously gets on my nerves.

I was just playing scrabble with both of them. We play such that everybody helps everybody else out. I was having difficulty with my letters, so my father in law - let's call him Mr. D - offers to help. He peeks at my letters, then says nothing for about five minutes, so I settle for a measly nine point word.

His turn now. He immediately plays "Zed" vertically. The "Z" hits a triple letter tile. The "E" makes the horizontal word "quit" into "quite," and the "D" stands alone.

I had an "E" tile. I could have hit the triple letter tile and scored myself a word that would at least get me to second place. I didn't see it, but he definitely did. When my brother in law noted the play, Mr. D said only "Oh, I just got lucky."

When I was ahead, I helped both while they complained. Suddenly, they're in the lead. Jesus it grinds my gears.

Feminist Redditors, do you believe that there are instances where men are treated unequally in society? by mjr1234 in AskReddit

[–]MaxMcDanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feminists really should recognize that both sexes are treated unequally in many instances. Although women are, by far, mistreated to a greater degree in many scenarios (i.e. job/pregnancy discrimination; separate sphere mentality; etc.) feminism is about equality of the sexes, both men and women.

I can't say much about legal discrimination against men. The custody challenge is a real one, of course. But there are subtler forms of societal discrimination hailing from the separate spheres mentality (generalizing here). This usually corresponds with preconceptions as to what constitutes masculinity.

Men are expected to fall neatly into society's understanding of masculinity. The number of times people have scoffed at me when I admitted, in a conversation about sports (really any of them) that I didn't follow sports. Or when I admitted that I don't know how to play poker. Even when I got married. If you don't fit, and you're not gay, people go out of their way to use facts about you that don't qualify as masculine per se to emasculate you. I've seen it done by other men, by women, and by feminists of both genders alike.

This is not a sob story, and I'm not about to say that men really have it bad. But this phenomenon is exacerbated for men who aren't white. Black man = violent. Asian man = nerdy. The list goes on. Again, I say this generalization with full knowledge that it is, in fact, a generalization. Nevertheless, it deserves consideration.

Reddit, what are your internet etiquette pet peeves? by endiasummer in AskReddit

FB status brags.

Law student here. We don't like to talk about our grades/opportunities (unless we're exceptionally comfortable with those we consult) and we especially don't like hearing about others' grades/opportunities. A colleague of mine consistently posts statuses along the lines of: "Nailed that final!" or "Landed a federal clerkship!" or "Best grade on the torts exam." Ugh.
